EDD calling to verify 'other income' on my application - what should I expect?

Hey everyone, I just got a call from EDD about my application. They needed to verify some info about other income I'll be receiving. Has anyone else dealt with this? What kind of questions did they ask you? I'm a bit nervous about how this might affect my claim.

Yeah, I went through something similar. They asked me about severance pay and some freelance work I did. Just be honest and have any documentation ready. It's not as scary as it seems!

Did they ask for specific amounts or just general info? I'm in the same boat and wondering how detailed I need to be

They wanted pretty specific info from me. Dates, amounts, who paid me. Better to have too much info than not enough imo

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

20 bucks? No way, that's a scam

I get the skepticism, but it seriously worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo

How long did you have to wait once they connected you?

Only about 5 minutes! Way better than the hours I spent trying to get through on my own

Make sure you report ALL income, even if you think it doesn't matter. I made the mistake of not mentioning some small gig work and it caused a huge delay in my claim. Better safe than sorry!

Does anyone know if PFL (Paid Family Leave) counts as "other income" for EDD purposes? I might need to take some time off to care for a family member soon, but I don't want it to mess up my unemployment claim.

PFL is administered by EDD, but it's separate from unemployment. You can't receive both at the same time tho

Thx for the info! Guess I'll have to choose between the two šŸ˜•

Here's a comprehensive breakdown of what EDD considers "other income" and how it might affect your claim: • Severance pay • Vacation pay • Holiday pay • Workers' compensation • Pension or retirement income • Self-employment income • Freelance or gig work • Rental income • Investment dividends Remember, you need to report ANY income you receive during your claim period. EDD will then determine how it affects your benefits. Some types of income may reduce your weekly benefit amount, while others might not affect it at all. Pro tip: Keep detailed records of all income, including dates received and amounts. This will make it easier if EDD needs to verify anything later. If you're unsure about something, always err on the side of reporting it. It's better to over-report than under-report and risk penalties or overpayments later.

This is super helpful, thanks for breaking it down! šŸ‘

Wait, so if I'm doing a little freelance work on the side, I have to report that? Even if it's just a few hundred bucks?

Yes, absolutely! Even small amounts need to be reported. It might not affect your benefits much (or at all), but not reporting it could get you in trouble later.

Hey man, you never know! šŸ•µļøā€ā™‚ļø Better safe than sorry

Has anyone had experience with reporting income from a side hustle? I started an Etsy shop while unemployed and idk how to handle it

0 coins

I did some doordash while on unemployment. You gotta report your net earnings (after expenses) each week. It's a pain but necessary

0 coins

Ugh, sounds complicated. Guess I better start keeping better records šŸ“Š

PSA: If EDD overpays you because of a mistake on their end, you can file for a waiver to avoid repaying it. Don't let them bully you into paying if it wasn't your fault!

For real? That's good to know. EDD's always trying to get their money back šŸ™„
