Pregnant and confused: What happens after EDD SDI approval but before leave starts?

I'm about to start my pregnancy disability leave next week and I'm completely lost about what happens next with my EDD SDI claim. I submitted my disability claim online about 10 days ago and got a confirmation number, but haven't received any further instructions or updates. My doctor already filed the medical certification. My online account just shows 'claim received' but nothing else. Do I need to call someone? Will I get paperwork in the mail? How do I know if I'm approved? Is there something else I need to do before my leave starts next week? I'm getting really anxious because I need to make sure I'll have income while I'm off work. This is my first pregnancy and first time dealing with disability leave. Thanks in advance for any guidance!

congrats on the baby! dont worry too much, EDD is just slow. i went thru this last yr. u prob wont hear anything for 2-3 weeks. then u'll get a letter and a debit card. just make sure u do ur certification when they tell u to

Thank you! What's the certification? Is that something different from the initial claim I already filed? I'm worried I'll miss something important.

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! The process after filing can be confusing, but here's what typically happens: 1. After your claim is received, EDD reviews it along with your doctor's certification 2. You should receive a Notice of Computation in the mail within 14 days showing your weekly benefit amount 3. If approved, you'll get a letter and an EDD Debit Card if this is your first time on SDI 4. About every two weeks, you'll need to complete a continued claim certification form (DE 2500A) either online or by mail The important thing to remember is that there's a 7-day waiting period where no benefits are paid. This waiting period starts from your first day of disability (when your leave begins). You don't need to call unless you haven't heard anything within 14-21 days after filing.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! That's really helpful. So I start my leave next Friday - does that mean the 7-day waiting period starts then? And will they automatically know when I actually stop working or do I need to notify them?

when i was pregnant last summer i waited almost 3 weeks before hearing ANYTHING from edd! then suddenly got aproved and backpay all at once. the waiting is THE WORST especially when ur about to have a baby and worried about $$$. hang in there mama!!

Oh wow, 3 weeks? That's such a long time to wait without knowing! Did you have to call them or did it just magically appear in your account?

One thing to consider - the date your doctor put on your medical certification determines when your claim officially starts. Make sure that date matches when you actually plan to stop working. If there's a discrepancy, you might need to have your doctor submit an amended certification. This happened to me and caused a lot of confusion!

That's a really good point. I'll double check with my doctor about what date they put. I'm planning to work until next Friday but now I'm worried they might have put a different date.

I work in HR and deal with this frequently. The most important thing is to make sure your last day of work is clearly communicated. If your doctor certified you for a date that's different from your actual last day, it can cause processing delays. Also, make sure your employer has completed their portion of the process. Some employers submit wage information electronically, while others might give you a form to submit. For Pregnancy Disability Leave specifically, you're typically eligible for up to 4 weeks before your due date and 6-8 weeks after delivery (depending on delivery type). After that, you might be eligible for Paid Family Leave (PFL) for bonding time. Keep an eye on your mail - all important communications come that way, not by email.

Thank you for this information! My HR department told me they'd handle everything on their end, but I'll double check with them tomorrow. My due date is June 12th, so I'm starting leave about 4 weeks before. I didn't realize the delivery type would affect the after-birth disability period - that's good to know.

I had SUCH a nightmare with my pregnancy disability claim last year! Waited and waited, finally called and they said they never got my doctor's certification even though her office SWORE they sent it twice!!! Had to get a third submission and then waited another 2 weeks. If I could do it again, I'd call EDD after a week just to confirm they received everything properly. I tried calling their regular number like 20 times and kept getting disconnected. Finally I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they got me connected to an EDD rep in like 20 minutes! They have a video demo here: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Seriously saved my sanity because I was about to give birth and panicking about money.

Is this Claimyr thing legit? I've been trying to reach EDD for days about my disability extension and keep getting disconnected. Getting desperate enough to try anything at this point.

Yes it's totally legit! I was skeptical too but it worked for me. Better than wasting hours redialing EDD just to get hung up on again.

dont forget u need to tell EDD when u actually give birth!! they don't automatically know!! i almost missed out on getting my benefits switched from pregnancy disability to bonding time cuz i didnt know i needed to update them when the baby came. the hospital doesn't tell them for u!

Omg thank you for mentioning this! I had no idea I'd need to notify them when I give birth. Do you just call them or is there a form to fill out?

To answer your follow-up question - yes, the 7-day waiting period starts on your first day of disability, which would be the day after your last day of work. So if your last day is next Friday, the waiting period begins Saturday. Regarding notification - your claim is based on the date your doctor certified, so EDDʼs system already has your disability start date. However, itʼs always good practice to make sure this date aligns with your actual last day of work. Also important to note: the 7-day waiting period is unpaid, so your first payment will cover the period beginning on the 8th day of your disability. Your first certification will likely cover a period starting from your 8th day through about two weeks after that.

Thank you for clarifying! So basically I won't get paid for the first week of my leave - that's the waiting period. And then the payments should start after that as long as I do the certifications. That makes sense.

Just so u know the payments are always behind. Like you'll certify for weeks that already passed. I got confused by this at first and thought i wasnt getting paid lol. Also keep track of EVERYTHING in case there's problems later.

Good to know! I'll definitely keep records of all my paperwork and dates. I'm making a folder for all this stuff.

one more thing - make sure u understand the difference between SDI and PFL! The pregnancy part before birth and right after is disability (SDI). Then when ur recovered, u switch to bonding time which is Paid Family Leave (PFL). they're kinda the same but different forms and stuff. i got soooo confused and almost messed up my benefits. also the amount u get paid might be different.

Thanks for pointing this out! I didn't realize they were separate programs with different paperwork. I'll make sure to research the transition process. Do they notify you when it's time to switch from SDI to PFL?

Regarding the transition from SDI to PFL: EDD doesn't automatically notify you when to switch from SDI to PFL. Your pregnancy disability typically ends when your doctor releases you to return to work (usually 6 weeks after a vaginal delivery or 8 weeks after a C-section). You need to file a separate PFL claim for the bonding period. You can do this online through your SDI account. It's best to file this claim a few weeks before your SDI claim ends to avoid gaps in payment. The good news is that there is no waiting period for PFL when it immediately follows an SDI claim. Also, your weekly benefit amount should be the same for both SDI and PFL since they're calculated the same way. I recommend setting a calendar reminder for around 4-5 weeks after your expected delivery date to start the PFL application process.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful information. I'll definitely set a reminder to apply for PFL before my SDI ends. I appreciate everyone's advice - I feel much more prepared now!

Hey Omar! I just went through this exact same process 6 months ago and remember how stressful the waiting was. A few things that helped me: 1. Download the EDD mobile app - sometimes updates show up there before you get mail 2. Make sure you have direct deposit set up in your account to avoid delays with the debit card 3. Keep your phone handy - they might call to verify information Also, since you're due in June, start thinking about childcare options now if you haven't already. The 12 weeks of combined SDI + PFL goes by faster than you think, and good daycare spots fill up quickly. Don't stress too much about the silence from EDD right now - 10 days is still pretty normal. You've got this, and congratulations on your upcoming little one! 🍼

Hi Omar! I'm currently going through the exact same process - due in July and just filed my SDI claim last week. The waiting is absolutely nerve-wracking, especially when you're trying to plan financially for the baby! One thing I learned from my sister who did this 2 years ago is to screenshot or print everything from your online account, including that confirmation number. She had an issue where EDD claimed they never received her claim, but she had the confirmation screenshot which saved her a lot of hassle. Also, if you're planning to breastfeed, you might want to look into whether your insurance covers breast pump rentals or purchases - some people don't realize this until after the baby arrives. Just thought I'd mention it since we're both in the same boat! Wishing you a smooth process and a healthy baby! 💕

Hi Amina! It's so nice to connect with someone going through the same thing at almost the same time! You're absolutely right about screenshotting everything - I'm definitely going to do that with my confirmation number and any other documentation. Thanks for the tip about the breast pump coverage too! I honestly hadn't even thought about that yet, but you're right that it's better to figure it out now rather than scrambling after the baby arrives. It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one feeling anxious about this whole process. Hopefully we both hear back from EDD soon! Best of luck with your pregnancy and claim - maybe we'll both have good news to share in a few weeks! 🤞

Hi Omar! I'm a newer member here but wanted to share what I learned from my recent SDI experience. The waiting period after filing is definitely the hardest part - you're doing everything right by staying on top of it! One thing that really helped me was calling my doctor's office to confirm they actually submitted the medical certification to EDD. Sometimes there are technical issues or the fax doesn't go through properly, and it's better to catch that early rather than wait weeks only to find out nothing was received. Also, when you do get your first certification form (DE 2500A), make sure to submit it right away even if you haven't received any payments yet. I made the mistake of waiting because I thought I needed to receive money first, but that actually delayed my payments by another two weeks. The whole process feels overwhelming when it's your first time, but you'll get through it! Your baby is lucky to have such a thoughtful parent already planning ahead. Congratulations! 🎉

Hi Diego! Thanks for sharing your experience - that's really helpful advice about double-checking with the doctor's office. I hadn't thought about technical issues with fax transmissions, but that makes total sense. I'll definitely call them tomorrow to confirm everything went through properly. And thank you for the heads up about submitting the DE 2500A form right away! I probably would have made the same mistake of waiting for payments first. It's so confusing when you're new to all this, but tips like yours make it much clearer. I really appreciate everyone in this community taking the time to help out us newcomers. It's making what felt like an impossible process seem much more manageable! 😊
