EDD pregnancy disability payment timing question - filed 12/9, paperwork signed, no payment date yet
I filed for my pregnancy disability claim on 12/9/24 and I'm confused about what happens next. EDD sent me something showing how much I'll receive weekly (yay!), and my doctor has signed all the required paperwork. But I still haven't gotten ANY information about when I'll actually start getting paid. Is the delay normal because of the holiday season? Or am I missing something? Do I need to file additional forms? I'm starting to panic because I'm due in 3 weeks and REALLY counting on this money starting soon! This is my first time navigating this whole SDI/PFL thing and I'm totally lost. Help!!

First, take a deep breath! What you've received is your Notice of Computation which shows your weekly benefit amount. That's a good sign! The payment info typically comes 1-2 weeks after that notice. Holiday processing delays are definitely real - EDD slows down significantly between mid-December and early January. You shouldn't need to do anything else if your doctor submitted the medical certification (DE2501) correctly. Your SDI benefits should start within 7 days of your disability date (either when you stopped working or when your doctor certified you should stop).

•Thank you!! That makes me feel better. My doctor put my last day as 12/7 on the form, so I guess I should be patient a little longer. The EDD website is so confusing to navigate - I can see my claim but there's no status updates or anything.

dont stress, mine took 3 weeks to get my first payment after the computation notice!! and that was in August with NO holidays. EDD is just sloooooow. you'll probly get a direct deposit soon. just keep checking ur account everyday

•Yes exactly!!! The system is HORRIBLE. When I had my baby last year, nothing about the timing made sense. Got my SDI computation notice 5 days after filing, but then waited 17 days for the first payment. Then when I transitioned to baby bonding PFL, more delays. EDD is completely inconsistent and they NEVER explain the wait times. I swear they're purposely confusing so people give up claiming benefits they deserve!!!

When you say you "filed" on 12/9, did you file online through SDI Online? And did you receive an actual Award Letter or just the Notice of Computation? They're different documents. The Award Letter specifically confirms your claim is approved and benefits will be paid. The Notice of Computation just tells you what your weekly amount will be IF approved. Also, make sure you've set up the EDD debit card if this is your first time on disability. They don't automatically send payments until that card is activated, even if your claim is approved. The holidays are definitely slowing things down too - I'd give it until January 10th before getting too concerned.

•Yes, I filed online through SDI Online. I'm pretty sure what I received was just the Notice of Computation - it showed my weekly benefit amount but didn't specifically say I was approved. I didn't know I needed to wait for a separate Award Letter! And thanks for the tip about the debit card. I haven't received anything about that yet either.

I had my baby in October and had a similar experience. The timing was weird - got computation notice right away but then waited forever for first payment. Did you check if you have an EDD debit card from previous unemployment? They use the same card for disability payments. That might be why you haven't gotten a new one.

•I've never had unemployment, so I definitely need a new card. Maybe that's what I'm waiting for? I didn't realize they would send that separately from the approval.

If you filed on 12/9 and today is only 12/29, that's just under 3 weeks with major holidays in between. Unfortunately that's normal processing time, especially during December. A few things to double-check: 1. Log into SDI Online and look for "Claim Status" - does it say "Paid" or "Pending"? 2. Look for a section called "Payment History" - any payments listed? 3. Check if you received your EDD Visa debit card (comes in a plain white envelope, easy to miss) If you can't get answers online, you'll unfortunately need to call EDD directly, which can be nearly impossible during peak times. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) last year when I was stuck with a similar situation. They connected me to an EDD rep within 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 Between the holiday backlog and your approaching due date, it might be worth using something like that rather than stressing about it.

•I had never heard of this Claimyr thing before. Has anyone else tried it? Seems sketchy to pay for something that should be a free government service...

To clarify for everyone in this thread, there's an important distinction between SDI (pregnancy disability) and PFL (baby bonding): - SDI covers you while physically disabled from pregnancy/childbirth (up to 4 weeks before birth and 6-8 weeks after depending on delivery type) - PFL covers the baby bonding period (8 weeks) after your recovery period The OP is currently on the SDI portion since she hasn't delivered yet. These are two separate claims with different paperwork and processes, even though they're both through EDD. Many new parents get confused because the transition between the two requires filing a new claim for PFL after SDI ends.

•Wait, so I need to file AGAIN after having the baby? I thought once I was approved for disability it would just continue until I go back to work. This is getting more confusing...

Yes, you'll need to file a separate PFL claim for baby bonding after your pregnancy disability ends. Your current SDI claim will cover you until your doctor certifies you've recovered from childbirth (typically 6 weeks for vaginal delivery or 8 weeks for C-section). After that recovery period ends, you'll file a new claim for PFL baby bonding using form DE2508. It's a separate process with different paperwork. But let's focus on your current situation first! Given the holiday delays, I would expect you to see payment information by mid-January at the latest. The system is slow but generally works eventually without you needing to take additional steps.

•Thank you for clarifying! I had no idea there were two separate claims involved. My doctor never explained any of this. I'll focus on getting through this first part for now and worry about the baby bonding portion later.

Random but make sure you keep track of your last day worked too because sometimes they calculate it wrong and it can delay your payments if the dates don't match up with what your doctor put!

Just checking in - have you received any updates on your claim? Did you check your claim status online as suggested? If it's still showing nothing by next week, I'd definitely recommend calling EDD directly.

•I just checked and my claim status now says "Paid" with a date of 12/28! So I guess the payment is on its way. Still no EDD card though, so I'm not sure how I'll access the money. Thanks everyone for your help and insights! I feel much better knowing what to expect now.
