Mailed SDI claim for pregnancy disability - no updates after 3 weeks & employer hasn't received notice
Hi everyone, I'm super stressed about my disability claim situation. I started my pregnancy disability leave on May 9th, 2025 (severe back pain and complications), and my OB mailed the physical EDD SDI claim form (DE 2501) on May 4th. It's been over 3 weeks now, and I've heard absolutely nothing from EDD! I can't see any claim in my SDI Online account, and when I checked with HR yesterday, they said they haven't received any employer notice that my claim was even filed. This is making me really nervous because my last paycheck just hit my account and bills are due next week. I know my doctor's office only does paper submissions (they refuse to use SDI Online for some reason), but is it normal for mailed claims to take this long just to be acknowledged in the system? I even called the post office to make sure it wasn't lost in the mail, but they couldn't tell me anything helpful. Has anyone else gone through this with a mailed pregnancy disability claim? How long did it take before you saw it in the system or your employer got notification?

•Thank you for sharing your experience! That gives me a little hope. Did you do anything in the meantime while waiting? I'm getting really anxious about covering my mortgage payment.

Paper claims typically take 2-3 weeks to process, but with the current backlog at EDD's processing centers, many are taking 3-5 weeks just to appear in the system. Once processed, it usually takes 7-10 business days for the employer notification to be sent out. I would recommend checking your SDI Online account daily, and also consider calling EDD directly to confirm they received your claim. They can sometimes locate paper claims in their processing queue even if they haven't been entered into the online system yet.

•OMG trying to call EDD is IMPOSSIBLE! I spent 3 days trying to reach someone last month about my disability claim and either got disconnected or was on hold for 2+ hours with no answer. Complete waste of time!!!

When my wife went on pregnancy disability last year, she had a similar issue with her obgyn only doing paper forms. What worked for us was having her contact her doctor's office to confirm exactly when it was mailed and get the tracking number if they used certified mail. Many offices keep this info. If they don't have it, ask them to fax a copy directly to EDD as a backup. The fax number should be on the DE 2501 form.

•That's a good idea! I'll call my doctor's office tomorrow. They didn't mention anything about certified mail or tracking when they sent it, but maybe they can fax a copy. I'm just worried if they fax it now, it might cause confusion if the original paper form is already somewhere in EDD's system.

I had the exact same issue when I started my disability leave for pregnancy complications in January. Paper claims are basically a nightmare with EDD's current processing times. After 4 weeks of nothing showing up, I finally got through to an actual claims specialist who was able to help. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to EDD without waiting for hours. They connected me to an EDD rep in about 25 minutes. They have a video demo of how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The rep found my claim in their processing backlog and expedited it. My claim was in the system the next day, and I received payment about a week later. Definitely worth considering if you need to get this resolved quickly for your bills.

•Is that service legit?? I'm in a similar situation and desperate to talk to someone at EDD but can't waste another day on hold.

•Yes, it's legitimate. I was skeptical too but my sister-in-law had used it successfully for her UI claim. It basically just does the calling and waiting for you, then alerts you when an actual person is on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

EDD is THE WORST!!! They lost my pregnancy disability paperwork TWICE last year, and I had to get my doctor to resubmit everything THREE times. By the time I finally got paid, I was already transitioning to Paid Family Leave bonding time with my baby! Their whole system is broken and nobody seems to care that people have bills to pay and can't just wait 2 months for their benefits!!!!

•While EDD does have delays, paper claims usually don't get completely lost unless there's an issue with the mailing address or other information. For future reference, it's worth noting that claimants can create an SDI Online account and check status even if their doctor submitted by mail. They just can't submit the claim online if their doctor doesn't participate in SDI Online.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I just wanted to update that I followed the advice here and was able to make progress. I called my doctor's office and they agreed to fax a copy of my claim form to EDD. I also used the Claimyr service mentioned above to get through to an EDD rep (it worked surprisingly well!). The rep confirmed they had received my original mailed claim, but it was sitting in a batch waiting to be processed. They flagged it for immediate processing due to my financial hardship. This morning my claim finally appeared in my SDI Online account with a status of "processing" and my employer got the notification! Just wanted to share in case anyone else runs into this issue with mailed pregnancy disability claims. The waiting is so stressful, especially with a baby on the way and bills piling up.

•That's great news! Glad you got it sorted out. Make sure you keep an eye on your account for the next step which is the certification process. Sometimes they automatically certify pregnancy claims, but sometimes they'll require you to certify for continued benefits.

•Online claims are typically processed faster than paper claims, but many factors can affect processing time including doctor verification delays, incomplete information, identity verification issues, and current claim volume. The standard timeframe for online claims is 7-14 days, but delays can occur. If a claim takes more than 3 weeks to process online, there's likely a specific issue that needs resolution.

•Yes, I'm definitely planning to use PFL after my disability ends! Thanks for the tip - I'll make sure to start that process early. Do you know exactly how many weeks before I should begin the PFL application?

•i would say at least 3-4 weeks before ur disability ends just to be safe. also make sure u select the "transitioning from disability" option when u apply for pfl so they know to connect the claims!
