EDD supplementary medical certificate deadline issue - my doctor's office closed until after due date!

I'm freaking out!! I just received a supplementary certificate form from EDD that needs to be completed by my doctor, but the due date is January 27th, 2025. The HUGE problem is my doctor's office just put up a notice saying they're closed for renovations from January 10th to February 5th! 🤦🏽‍♂️ I tried calling EDD twice but couldn't get through to anyone. Has anyone dealt with this kind of timing issue before? Will my benefits get cut off if this form isn't submitted by the deadline? Is there any way to get an extension or submit some kind of explanation? Really worried about losing my disability payments over something that's completely out of my control!

call edd and tell them the situation, they can extend the deadline. happened to me when my dr went on vacation

Thanks but did you even read my post? I said I tried calling EDD TWICE already and couldn't get through to anyone. That's part of the problem!

Don't panic yet. There are a few options you can try: 1. Check if your doctor has a partner physician or covering doctor during the closure who can complete the form. Many medical offices arrange coverage during extended closures. 2. Call your doctor's office before they close - there's likely an administrative staff person who can help coordinate getting this form completed before they shut down. 3. If those don't work, you should submit a written explanation to EDD through your SDI Online account. Go to "Contact EDD" and explain the situation, including the dates of your doctor's office closure and when you'll be able to submit the form. Request an extension based on these circumstances. 4. Keep documentation of the office closure (take a photo of the notice if possible) to support your case. EDD generally will work with you if you're proactive about communicating the issue before the deadline passes.

Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I didn't even think about a covering physician. I'll call the office tomorrow morning and see if that's an option. And I'll definitely take a picture of that closure notice too. Really appreciate the help!

Its not that big of a deal, I was late with one of mine by like 3 weeks and nothing happened. they just want the form eventually lol

While some people don't experience immediate consequences from late forms, this isn't universally true. EDD can and does suspend benefits when supplementary certifications aren't received by their deadlines. It really depends on your specific claim circumstances and sometimes which claims examiner is handling your case. Being proactive is always the safer approach.

This is WHY I hate dealing with EDD! They send these requests with impossible deadlines and then you can't even reach anyone when there's a legitimate problem. I went through something similar last year with my pregnancy disability claim. My doctor was out on emergency leave and I nearly lost my benefits because of their ridiculous timeframes. The whole system is designed to make you fail!

YES!! I had the same experience. Ended up having to drive 2 hours to another clinic to get someone to sign my form because my regular doctor was unavailable. The stress from that actually made my condition worse!

I had a similar situation where I couldn't get the supplementary certificate completed by the deadline. What worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual EDD representative. They have a service that helps you connect with EDD SDI agents without waiting on hold forever. I was able to explain my situation to the rep who noted it in my file and gave me a reasonable extension. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd In my case, I had the form completed two weeks after the deadline, and my benefits continued without interruption because the agent had documented my circumstances.

That sounds really helpful! I've never heard of this service before. Did you have to wait long to talk to someone? After spending hours getting disconnected by EDD's phone system, I'm desperate to actually speak with a human.

Sorry ur stressing about this!!!!! My doctr office once faxed my form a week late and i didn't have any problems with my payments but maybe i got lucky idk. could u try calling another doctor in the same practice??? Sometimes they can access ur records and sign of for the regular doctor

I'm not sure if there's another doctor who can access my records, but that's definitely worth checking! I'll call first thing tomorrow and see what options they have. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just to clarify something important - there's a difference between the original medical certification for your claim and a supplementary certification. Supplementary certifications are typically requested when EDD needs updated information about your condition or to verify continuing disability. They're more flexible with these deadlines as long as you communicate with them. It's the initial certification that's much stricter. What type of disability claim are you on? Is this for SDI or PFL?

This is for regular SDI - I've been on disability for about 3 months now for a back injury from work. This is the first supplementary certification they've requested. Thanks for explaining the difference - that makes me feel a bit better that they might be more flexible!

After reading your responses, I'd suggest two immediate actions: 1. Contact your doctor's office TOMORROW before they close and explain this is urgent. Most offices have procedures for handling time-sensitive paperwork even during closures. 2. Get written documentation of their closure dates. Then use Claimyr or continue calling EDD directly until you reach someone. When you do, request a specific deadline extension and ask them to note it in your file. Get the representative's ID number and the time/date of your call for your records. If your doctor can't complete it before closing, see if they can arrange an early reopening appointment specifically for your paperwork on February 5th.

Update: I just got through to my doctor's office! They said they can complete the form tomorrow if I bring it in first thing in the morning. They're actually keeping one administrative person working through next week to handle emergencies, so I might have been panicking for nothing. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice - I feel so much better now!

That's such great news! I'm so glad you called them back and found out they have someone handling emergencies. It's amazing how much stress we can put ourselves through when sometimes there's actually a simple solution available. Make sure to get there early tomorrow morning and maybe bring a copy of the form just in case. Hope everything goes smoothly with your paperwork!

What a relief! It's so stressful when you think you're stuck with no options, but it sounds like your doctor's office really came through for you. Definitely get there as early as possible tomorrow - maybe even call ahead to confirm the administrative person will be there and has everything they need to complete your form. It's great that you took everyone's advice and kept pushing to find a solution instead of just accepting the situation. Hope your form gets submitted without any issues!
