EDD SDI extension gap risk - need to change doctor appointment to avoid payment lapse?
I'm so stressed about this timing issue with my disability claim. My current 6-week disability period ends on October 14, 2025, but my doctor follow-up appointment isn't until October 17. If my doctor determines I need an extension, will EDD backdate the extension to cover those 3 days gap, or will I lose payment for October 15-17? I'm worried about having those days unpaid since my savings are basically gone after being out of work. Should I try to move my appointment earlier? Has anyone dealt with this situation? The online information about extensions is confusing me!

You should definitely try to reschedule your doctor appointment to before your disability period ends if possible. While EDD can sometimes backdate disability extensions, it's not guaranteed and can cause processing delays. Having your doctor complete the extension certification before your current claim ends creates a seamless transition and prevents gaps in payment. If you absolutely can't reschedule, make sure your doctor clearly notes in their certification that your disability has been continuous.

•Thank you! I'll call my doctor's office tomorrow morning to see if they can fit me in earlier. Do you know if there's a specific form for extensions or is it the same form as the initial certification?

I went through this EXACT situation in February! My doctor couldn't see me earlier so I had a 4-day gap. EDD did eventually backdate my payments, but it took FOREVER and I had to call them like 10 times!!! They kept saying they "needed to review" the dates. I had to go 3 weeks with no money coming in while they sorted it out. If u can move ur appt, DO IT!!!

•I had a completely different experience. My doctor's appointment was 5 days after my disability ended, but they still backdated everything with no issues. Your claims examiner might have just been difficult. The whole system is so inconsistent - some people get everything processed smoothly and others get stuck in red tape for weeks over the same issue.

Speaking from experience handling many disability claims, here's what you need to know about extensions: 1. Your doctor needs to complete a "Physician/Practitioner's Supplementary Certificate" (DE 2525XX) form for your extension 2. Technically, EDD can backdate an extension to cover continuous disability, but it often creates processing delays 3. There should be no gap between your original end date and extension start date on the form 4. If you can't reschedule your appointment earlier, have your doctor specifically document that your disability has been continuous from the original claim The most seamless approach is definitely getting that appointment before your current disability period ends. It prevents any potential payment interruption and simplifies the process.

•This is incredibly helpful! I just called my doctor's office and explained the situation. They had a cancellation and can now see me on October 12th instead. What a relief! I'll make sure they complete that DE 2525XX form correctly.

I went through this nightmare scenario last year. Called EDD 22 times trying to get my extension processed correctly after having a 2-day gap. If I could do it all over, I would have just rescheduled my doctor appointment. Have you tried using Claimyr to reach EDD directly? I discovered it after my 15th failed attempt to reach someone. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. It got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold or getting disconnected. Their website is claimyr.com. It was honestly worth it to get answers about my extension issues directly from EDD.

•I second this recommendation. I also used Claimyr when I had issues with my extension application. Got through to EDD in about 25 minutes instead of spending days trying to reach someone. The agent I spoke with was able to flag my extension for immediate processing and explained exactly what was happening with my claim.

Quick Question - has anyone had their doctor check the "residual functions" box on the extension form? My doctor mentioned this might apply to me and I'd get partial disability. Not sure how that works with EDD?

•Yes, "residual functions" means you can perform some work but not your full job duties. If your doctor indicates this, your claim becomes partial disability. You'll need to report any wages earned during this period. Your weekly benefit amount will be reduced accordingly based on a specific formula. Make sure your doctor is clear about what specific job functions you can and cannot perform - this helps determine if modified work is possible with your employer.

I'm new here but dealing with something similar - my disability period ends next month and I was panicking about the timing. Reading through everyone's experiences here is so helpful! It sounds like the key takeaway is to definitely try to get that doctor appointment before your current period ends if at all possible. The fact that some people got backdated payments but had to deal with weeks of delays and multiple phone calls sounds incredibly stressful, especially when you're already dealing with health issues and financial strain. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - this community is a lifesaver for navigating all this confusing EDD stuff!

•Welcome to the community! You're absolutely right - the experiences shared here really highlight how important timing is with EDD disability extensions. I'm also relatively new to dealing with disability claims and found this thread super informative. The consensus seems clear: reschedule that doctor appointment if you possibly can to avoid the headache of gaps and processing delays. It's reassuring to know there are people here who've been through similar situations and are willing to share their knowledge. Hope your extension process goes smoothly when the time comes!

This is such valuable information for anyone dealing with extension timing! I'm currently on SDI and my period ends in a few weeks, so this thread came at the perfect time. It's really eye-opening to see how different people's experiences were - some got backdated with no issues while others had to call EDD dozens of times. The consensus is clear though: avoid the gap if you possibly can! For anyone else in a similar situation, it seems like the key points are: 1) Try to reschedule your appointment before your current period ends, 2) Make sure your doctor uses the DE 2525XX form for extensions, and 3) Have them document continuous disability if there is any gap. Thanks everyone for sharing your real experiences - it's so much more helpful than trying to decode EDD's confusing website!

•Absolutely! This thread has been incredibly helpful for me too. I'm also dealing with my first SDI extension and was feeling really overwhelmed by all the different forms and timing requirements. Reading everyone's real experiences - both the success stories and the nightmare scenarios - really drives home how crucial it is to get that appointment scheduled before your current period ends. It's scary to think about being stuck in EDD limbo for weeks while they sort out backdating issues, especially when you're already dealing with health problems and can't work. Thanks Sofia for summarizing those key points so clearly - I'm definitely going to reference this thread when my extension time comes up!

I just went through this exact same situation a few months ago and can share what worked for me. I was in a similar panic because my disability period was ending on a Friday and my doctor couldn't see me until the following Tuesday. After reading horror stories about payment gaps and calling EDD multiple times, I decided to be proactive. I called my doctor's office and explained the urgency - that I needed the appointment before my disability period ended to avoid payment interruption. They were actually really understanding and squeezed me in during a lunch break slot. My doctor filled out the DE 2525XX extension form right there during the appointment, and I submitted it to EDD the same day. The whole process went smoothly with no payment gap at all. Looking back, I think the key was being upfront with the doctor's office about why the timing mattered so much. Most medical offices deal with workers' comp and disability paperwork regularly, so they understand these deadlines. Don't be afraid to explain your financial situation - they often have flexibility for urgent cases like this. Really glad you were able to get your appointment moved up to October 12th! That should give you plenty of buffer time before your October 14th end date.
