EDD SDI extension when return-to-work date is approaching - need urgent help!

My disability claim is set to expire on 8/18/2025 (that's my return-to-work date), but I haven't received any notification about extending my claim. My doctor says I'll need at least another 6 weeks before I can safely return to my construction job. I'm getting really anxious because my benefits will stop soon and I still can't work! Do I need to wait until exactly 8/18 to get an extension message? Or should it come a few days before? And am I supposed to contact my doctor's office to make this happen, or does EDD reach out to them directly? This is my first time on disability and I'm worried about losing income. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Oh no, really?? I thought EDD would notify me when it was time to extend. I'll call my doctor's office first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks for the heads up!

The previous commenter is correct. Extensions aren't automatic in the SDI system. Your doctor needs to complete a new DE 2501 form (Physician/Practitioner Certification) to extend your disability period. Ideally, this should be submitted 1-2 weeks before your current claim expires to prevent a gap in payments. Contact your doctor's office ASAP and ensure they're aware you need an extension. They should submit the extension certification through SDI Online, which is faster than paper forms. Once they've submitted it, you'll also need to complete a new claim form (essentially a continuation claim) through your SDI Online account. Keep in mind that EDD may request additional medical evidence to support an extension beyond your original estimated return date.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I just got off the phone with my doctor's office and they said they'll submit the extension certification this week. How long does it typically take for EDD to process an extension request? Will there be a delay in my payments?

Processing times vary, but typically EDD takes 7-14 days to process extension requests if all documentation is complete. There might be a slight delay in payments, but as long as the extension is approved, you'll receive retroactive payments for any missed weeks. Make sure to check your SDI Online account regularly for updates. Once the extension is processed, you'll still need to complete your bi-weekly certifications to continue receiving benefits.

I had this EXACT SAME ISSUE last year!!! My doctor submitted the extension paperwork but EDD took FOREVER to process it. I went almost THREE WEEKS without any payments and couldn't get through to anyone on the phone!!! The system is completely broken!!!

My doctor made a mistake on my extension paperwork and it got denied even tho I wasn't ready to go back to work. Just make sure they fill everything out correctly and double check all the dates. Sometimes they rush through those forms.

That's concerning! Did you eventually get it sorted out? I'll definitely ask them to review all the information with me before they submit it.

When i went through this in January my claim was about to expire and I called my doctor's office and they said they had already submitted the extension paperwork but EDD hadn't processed it yet. I ended up having to wait two weeks with no benefits before the extension kicked in. It was really stressful. But at least they backdated the payments once it was approved! Btw make sure you're not confusing SDI with PFL (Paid Family Leave). They're different programs with different rules. I made that mistake and it caused so much confusion.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm definitely on SDI for my own medical condition. I'm worried about having a gap in payments too, especially since rent is due right after my claim expires. I might try that Claimyr service someone mentioned if I don't see any updates in my account soon.

Here's what you need to know about SDI extensions: 1. Your doctor must submit a new certification through SDI Online before your current claim period ends 2. You'll need to complete a continuation claim on your end as well 3. There's no automatic notification system to remind you about extensions 4. The EDD reviews extension requests to ensure they're medically necessary 5. If approved, you'll continue receiving the same weekly benefit amount For construction work specifically, EDD often scrutinizes return-to-work extensions more carefully since physical jobs require more complete recovery. Make sure your doctor clearly documents your functional limitations and why they prevent you from performing your specific job duties.

Thank you for the thorough explanation! I spoke with my doctor today and they're going to submit the extension certification with detailed information about my limitations. I'm still recovering from back surgery and definitely can't lift heavy materials yet, which is a core requirement of my job. Hopefully the detailed medical information will help speed up the approval process.

That's actually incorrect information. The 7-day waiting period only applies at the beginning of a new claim, not for extensions of an existing claim. As long as the extension is for the same medical condition and there isn't a significant gap between certification periods, there's no additional waiting period required.

Update: My doctor's office submitted the extension paperwork yesterday! They said they included detailed notes about why I can't return to construction work yet. Now I'm just waiting to see if/when it gets approved. Thanks everyone for your help - I would have been completely lost without your advice!

That's great news! Keep checking your SDI Online account for updates - you should see the status change once EDD processes the extension. The detailed notes from your doctor will definitely help since construction work has specific physical requirements. Fingers crossed it gets approved quickly so you don't have any gap in benefits!

Great to hear you got the paperwork submitted! Just a heads up - you might want to call EDD's SDI customer service line in about a week if you don't see any updates in your online account. Sometimes extension requests get stuck in the system and a phone call can help move things along. I know the wait times are brutal, but it's worth it to avoid any potential gaps in your benefits. Also, make sure you continue doing your bi-weekly certifications even while the extension is pending - you don't want to miss any certification periods. Keep us posted on how it goes!

Thanks for the tip about calling EDD if nothing updates! I definitely don't want to risk any gaps. Quick question - do you know if there's a specific time of day that's better for getting through to their customer service? I've heard the wait times can be several hours. Also, should I keep doing my certifications right up until my current claim expires on 8/18, or do I need to wait for the extension to be approved first?
