EDD SDI payment delay due to holiday tomorrow - when will funds actually arrive?

So my disability payment is scheduled to deposit tomorrow (Presidents' Day) according to my EDD account portal. But I just realized tomorrow is a federal holiday and banks are closed! Will the payment still process overnight like usual and show up in my account tomorrow night? Or will everything be delayed until Tuesday or even Wednesday? I've got auto-payments set up for Tuesday and really need those funds to clear. This is my first time dealing with a holiday during my disability claim period and I'm getting anxious about timing. Does anyone know how EDD handles payment deposits that fall on holidays? Thanks!

from my experience the payment WONT go through until tuesday. bank holidays always delay everything by at least 1 day. edd processes it on schedule but the banks dont actually move the money till they open again

Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. I'm going to have to call my utility company to change my auto-payment date. Thanks for the heads up!

Actually, it depends on your bank and how EDD sent your payment. If you're set up with direct deposit, EDD will still process the payment on schedule, but your bank won't post it until they're open for business after the holiday. Some banks will show pending deposits though. If you're getting funds on an EDD debit card, the deposit might still show up tomorrow since that system sometimes processes separate from regular banking hours. Check your card balance online tomorrow morning - it might be there!

I do have direct deposit to my credit union. I'll check tomorrow morning to see if it at least shows as pending. Thanks for the detailed explanation!

I had this EXACT situation during Memorial Day last year!!! EDD processed everything on time but my bank didn't actually put the money in my account until WEDNESDAY!!! TWO DAYS LATE!!! I ended up with overdraft fees because my rent payment tried to go through. Call your bank RIGHT NOW and see if they can tell you how they handle holiday deposits specifically for government benefits. Some banks have special processing for those.

Wednesday would be a disaster for me. I'll definitely call my bank today. Sorry you had to deal with overdraft fees - that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid.

my brother gets ssi payments and his always come in the day before if the regular pay date is a holiday. maybe edd does the same thing? worth checking your account tonight just in case

That's true for some federal benefits like SSI, but EDD disability payments don't typically process early for holidays. They might process on schedule, but banking regulations usually prevent the funds from being available until after the holiday. Each bank handles this differently though.

If you urgently need to speak with someone at EDD about your payment, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation with a payment timing issue and couldn't get through on the phone for days. Claimyr got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 25 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The rep I spoke with was able to tell me exactly when my payment would post despite the holiday, which gave me peace of mind.

Thank you! I might try that if nothing posts by Tuesday morning. The regular EDD phone line is impossible - I tried calling this morning and couldn't get through after 45 minutes on hold.

this happens literally every holiday and people always panic lol. your money will come but yea probably tuesday. just call whatever bill companies and explain, most will give you an extension if you explain its a disability payment delayed by a holiday

I'm not panicking! Ok maybe a little lol. First time on disability and everything's new to me. I'll call my bill companies tomorrow. Thanks for the reality check!

For anyone dealing with this issue in the future, I wanted to share that the EDD disability payment schedule actually accounts for banking holidays in their processing timeline. According to the EDD website, they recommend allowing 24-48 additional hours for payments to process when there's a bank holiday. This is different from the certification processing time, which isn't affected by holidays. It's specifically the bank transfer portion that experiences delays. The payment will show as processed in your EDD account history, but won't appear in your bank until their next business day. If your payment is typically scheduled for direct deposit on Mondays, then you should anticipate it arriving on Tuesday following a Monday holiday. If you're experiencing a longer delay than that, then it might be worth contacting EDD directly.

This is super helpful information, thank you! I wish they'd make this clearer on the EDD portal. My payment says "issued" but nothing about potential holiday delays.

Update: My payment finally hit my account this morning (Tuesday)! For anyone reading this in the future with the same question - EDD processed it on schedule but it didn't show in my bank until the first business day after the holiday.

Thanks for sharing this update! This is really helpful for others who might face the same situation. I'm dealing with my first holiday delay right now (MLK Day) and was getting worried when my payment didn't show up yesterday. Knowing it should hit today gives me some peace of mind. Did you end up having any issues with your auto-payments, or were you able to get everything sorted out with your creditors?

@Emily Thompson I was able to call my utility company and credit card company on Monday and explain the situation. Both were really understanding about the holiday delay and gave me a 2-day extension without any fees. I d'recommend calling as soon as you know there might be a delay - most companies are familiar with government benefit payment schedules and how holidays affect them. Hope your payment comes through today!

I'm new to receiving EDD disability benefits and this thread has been incredibly helpful! I have a similar situation coming up with the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. My payment is scheduled for that Monday, so based on everyone's experiences here, I should expect it to arrive on Tuesday instead. It's reassuring to know this is normal and that most companies are understanding about these holiday delays. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it really helps those of us who are navigating this for the first time!

Welcome to the disability benefits community! You're absolutely right - based on everyone's shared experiences, you should expect your Memorial Day payment to arrive on Tuesday instead of Monday. One thing I'd add from reading through this thread is to maybe set a reminder to call any companies with auto-payments scheduled for that Tuesday, just to give them a heads up about the potential delay. It sounds like most are pretty accommodating when you explain it's a government benefit delayed by a holiday. Good luck with everything!

I just wanted to add that if you're using the EDD debit card instead of direct deposit, the timing can be a bit different. I've noticed that my EDD card sometimes gets loaded earlier than expected, even on holidays, because it uses a different processing system than traditional bank transfers. It's worth checking your card balance online or at an ATM on the holiday itself - you might get a pleasant surprise! But if you're doing direct deposit to a regular bank account, then yeah, expect the delay until the next business day like everyone else mentioned.

That's really good to know about the EDD debit card! I didn't realize it might process differently than direct deposit. I'm currently set up with direct deposit but considering switching to the card if it means more reliable timing, especially around holidays. Do you find the card is generally faster for getting your payments, or is it just the holiday processing that's different? Also, are there any downsides to using the card versus direct deposit that I should know about?
