EDD Claim Issues: Switching from GP to Canadian-licensed Psychiatrist - Help!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my unemployment claim. I started off with a GP who took me off work, but now I'm seeing a psychiatrist. The thing is, my psychiatrist is licensed in Canada but practicing here. I'm totally lost on what forms I need to continue my claim and switch doctors. Anyone been through something similar or know what I should do? I'm worried about how this might affect my claim with the unemployment office.

Oof, that sounds like a headache. Have you tried calling the unemployment office directly? They should be able to guide you through the process.

I had a similar situation when I moved states. Here's what you need to do: 1. Get a letter from your GP explaining why they're no longer treating you. 2. Have your psychiatrist fill out a new medical certification form. 3. Submit a change of physician form to the unemployment office. 4. Include a detailed explanation of your psychiatrist's credentials and why they're qualified to treat you despite being licensed in Canada. 5. Be prepared for some back-and-forth. They might request additional documentation. It's a pain, but stay persistent. Document everything and keep copies of all forms you submit. Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much for this detailed response! This is super helpful. Do you know if there's a specific form for change of physician?

Yep! Look for form DE 2662A on the EDD website. That's the one you need for changing your treating physician.

Have you considered getting a different psychiatrist who's licensed in the US? Might save you a lot of headaches in the long run.

I've thought about it, but I really click with my current doc. Plus, finding a new psychiatrist who's taking patients is tough rn

Stick with the doc you trust. Mental health is too important to compromise on. You got this! 💪

Hey, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I was skeptical too, but I tried it and it actually worked. Saved me hours of frustration.

20 bucks tho? Thats kinda steep just to talk to someone...

I get it, but for me, it was worth it. Time is money, and I was wasting so much time trying to get through.

idk about the Canada thing, but when I switched docs, I had to fill out a DE 2662A form. Hope that helps!

Quick question - is your psychiatrist able to prescribe meds in the US? That might be a key factor in whether EDD accepts them.

Yeah, he can and has prescribed meds for me. That's a good point tho, I'll make sure to mention that when I talk to EDD.

Not to be that guy, but have you checked if your claim is even still valid? Sometimes they cut you off without notice 😒

Oof, I hadn't even thought of that. Now I'm worried... guess I've got another thing to check on 😰
