Did CalWORKs stop giving the $30 diaper allowance? Can't get answers from my worker

I have a 10-month-old and I've been getting the diaper money ($30) with my CalWORKs cash aid for the past few months. But this month it wasn't on my EBT card. Did they stop this benefit? I tried calling my worker 3 times this week but can't get through. Has anyone else's diaper allowance suddenly stopped? My baby isn't potty trained yet so I still need it!

The diaper allowance is definitely still available! It's $30 per month for each child under 3 years old receiving CalWORKs. There are a few reasons it might have stopped: 1. Your worker may have accidentally removed it during your last redetermination 2. There might be an issue with your SAR7 if you recently submitted one 3. Sometimes the computer system glitches and drops certain special needs payments You need to talk to your worker to get it fixed and request retroactive payment for this month too.

Thank you!! That makes me feel better knowing it still exists. I did submit my SAR7 last month so maybe that's why? Do you know if they'll give me the money I missed this month once I get ahold of someone?

Ugh the office is so far from me and with bus fare + bringing the baby it's such a hassle. But you're right, I might have to just go in.

This happened to me in January! I called for 2 weeks straight and couldn't get through. I ended up using Claimyr.com to reach someone at my county office and got it fixed in one call. They basically call for you and connect you when a worker picks up. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE They fixed my diaper money and added the missed month to my next payment. The diaper benefit is definitely still active - it's actually in state law that CalWORKs has to provide it for kids under 3.

does that actually work?? i thought it was a scam when i saw it before. the phone system is so frustrating i might try anything at this point

It worked for me! My worker even said they've been getting a lot more calls through that service lately. They can't do anything about SAR7 or documents but for quick fixes like the diaper benefit it saved me a trip to the office.

You should request a Notice of Action showing why it was stopped. By law, they're required to send you written notice before reducing your benefits. If you didn't get one, that's another issue to bring up when you finally reach them. Also make sure your child's age is correctly listed in the system. I've seen cases where they accidentally entered a birthdate wrong and the system thought the child was older than 3.

I never got any notice! That's part of why I was so confused. I'll definitely ask about that when I can get through. And his birthdate is definitely right in the system since we just did redetermination and I double-checked all that paperwork.

THEY DID THIS TO ME TWICE!!!! The county workers don't even know their own rules half the time. One time my worker told me the diaper benefit was discontinued completely and I had to literally show her the policy on my phone! Then another time they just "forgot" to add it back after my review. The system is such a mess and we're the ones who suffer. So annoying having to chase them down for every dollar we're entitled to.

Same here! It's like they hope we won't notice so they can save money. I had to fight for backpay too when they "forgot" my diaper money for 3 months.

wait i thot it was $20? mine is $20 every month not $30??? have i been getting shorted all this time???

The diaper benefit was $20 when it first started in 2019, but it increased to $30 per month per child in January 2024. You should be getting $30 now! Definitely call your worker about that.

UPDATE: I finally got through! For anyone else with this problem - my worker said there was a system glitch during SAR7 processing that affected several diaper allowances. She fixed it and I'll get both February and March's diaper money with my April payment. She apologized for not answering my calls - apparently they're super understaffed right now.

That's great news! Make sure you get a confirmation number or some kind of written verification that they're fixing it, just to be safe. I'd also recommend setting a calendar reminder to check your April payment to ensure they actually add the back payments.

good to know! my sar7 is due next month so i'll keep an eye on my diaper money after i submit it

So glad you got it resolved! This is exactly why I always tell people to keep calling even when it seems hopeless. The SAR7 system glitches are becoming way too common - I've heard this same story from at least 5 other parents in my area. It's frustrating that we have to chase them down for benefits we're legally entitled to, but at least you're getting the back pay. Thanks for updating us with the resolution!

This is so helpful to hear about! I'm new to CalWORKs and didn't even know about the diaper allowance until I saw this post. My daughter just turned 8 months old - should I be getting this benefit automatically or do I need to ask my worker to add it? I don't want to miss out if it's something I'm supposed to be receiving!
