Are CalWORKs extra benefit payments ending this month? (diaper stipend & food supplement)
Ok so I just heard from my friend that the extra money we've been getting with CalWORKs is stopping after this month? I get $115 for diapers and the $82 food supplement for my 2 kids (I have a 1 yr old and 3 yr old). My worker never mentioned anything about this ending when I did my recertification in March. Has anyone else heard anything about these extras being cut? I rely on that diaper money so much! Are they really stopping it? My budget is already super tight and honestly don't know how I'll manage if these extras disappear next month 😫

I just had my recertification last week and my worker specifically told me the CalWORKs diaper benefit ($115/month per child under 3) is continuing through at least December 2025. The food supplement of $82 per household was extended in the last California budget. Neither of these is ending this month. Your friend might be confusing these with some other benefit or maybe their individual situation changed (like their child turned 3 which would end the diaper benefit for that child). Call your county office to confirm, but as far as I know, these supplemental benefits are still in place.

•The CalWORKs diaper benefit is actually statewide and standardized across all 58 counties since it's part of the state program, not a county-specific benefit. It's $115 per month per child under age 3 in the assistance unit. The benefit automatically stops the month after the child turns 3 - no notice is required when it ends because it's age-based. The food supplement is also a statewide benefit. The most likely explanation is the friend's child is turning 3 soon, or there's confusion with some other type of assistance.

•That's not accurate information. The California budget for 2025 specifically maintained these supplements. If you're having your case reviewed again so soon after recertification, it's likely because of a reported change, an income discrepancy, or perhaps you missed submitting a required document. This would be specific to your case, not a general program change. It's really important not to spread misinformation about benefits ending when they're not - it causes unnecessary stress for other recipients.

I tried calling my CalWORKs office to confirm about the diaper stipend continuing (since I have twins who are 18 months) and couldn't get through after trying for 2 hours!! So frustrating when you need actual information. I finally used Claimyr.com and got connected to a real worker in about 10 minutes who confirmed the diaper benefits are NOT ending. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE The worker I spoke with said both the diaper benefit and food supplement are secure in the budget at least through the end of 2025. So unless your child ages out (turns 3), nothing is changing with these supplements right now.

•Thank you! I might try that service because I never can get through to my worker when I call directly. Did they ask for your SSN or anything before connecting you? Just wondering how it works

•They just need your phone number so they can call you back when they get a worker on the line. They don't ask for any personal info like SSN or case number. You just tell that stuff directly to the county worker once you're connected.

•As others have confirmed, these benefits are NOT ending. The official California Department of Social Services website confirms both the diaper stipend and food supplement are funded through the current budget cycle. There's been no policy change. If you're concerned about your specific case, I'd recommend checking your BenefitsCal account for any notices or contacting your worker directly.

What probably happened was that your friend's child turned 3, so they lost the diaper money for that child. My sister just went through this - she has 3 kids and when her middle one turned 3 in April, the benefit dropped by $115 starting in May. But she still gets it for her youngest who's 1. Sometimes the notices about these changes are really confusing too - they just say something like "your cash aid amount has changed" without clearly explaining it's because of the diaper benefit age limit.

•That makes so much sense actually. Her oldest just turned 3 and she has a 6 month old. So she probably just lost it for ONE kid but still gets it for the baby. I feel so much better, thanks for explaining it that way!

my cousin whos a eligibility worker says theres BIG changes coming to calworks but not till next year. something about making the welfare to work hours different and maybe changing the 48 month time limit. but nothing about ending the extra benefits right now

•While there are always policy discussions happening, no major CalWORKs program changes have been officially announced for next year. The current program structure, including the 48-month time limit and WTW participation requirements, remains in effect. It's best to rely on official notices from your county office rather than secondhand information, even from relatives who work in the system. Policy discussions often happen internally long before any changes are implemented, and many proposed changes never actually go into effect.
