Rumors about CalFresh benefits being cut in 2025 - will my family lose food assistance?

My neighbor just told me that shes heard CalFresh benefits are getting cut in a couple months bc of some budget thing?? We're a family of 4 (me, husband, and 2 kids) living on just my husbands income since I lost my job in December. We get $825/month right now which BARELY covers our food as it is with prices so high. My youngest has food allergies so we spend extra on special foods. I'm freaking out that they might reduce our benefits or take them away completely! Has anyone else heard about this? How much are they cutting and when? Will families like mine be affected or is it just for single people? Really scared about feeding my kids if they cut us off 😥

I heard something similar from my caseworker when I called last week! She mentioned 'budget adjustments' but wouldnt give me details. Said we'd all get letters if anything changes. Im scared too.

Did they say when the letters would go out? I check my mail every day but haven't seen anything yet. I'm going to start stocking up on canned goods just in case 😞

I work with a nonprofit that helps people with CalFresh applications, and I can provide some accurate information here. There are no confirmed across-the-board cuts to CalFresh benefits scheduled for 2025 in California at this time. What you might be hearing about are: 1. Normal benefit adjustments that happen annually based on the cost of living 2. Individual household changes when someone's circumstances change (income increase, household size change, etc.) 3. Rumors based on federal budget discussions that haven't been finalized If there were major programmatic changes coming, the California Department of Social Services would send official notices to all recipients well in advance. Your benefit amount is based on your household size, income, and allowable deductions. For a family of 4 with your current benefit level, you wouldn't see changes unless your household circumstances change or there's a major policy shift (which would require legislation). I'd recommend checking the BenefitsCal website or app for any official notifications rather than relying on rumors.

so ur saying its fake news?? my cousin works for the county and she DEFINITELY said cuts r coming, just not announced yet. govt always hides stuff till last minute

Nonprofit worker above is correct that there are no CONFIRMED cuts as of now, but there are budget negotiations happening that COULD affect SNAP/CalFresh. Nothing is finalized. Best approach is to: 1. Make sure your contact info is updated with the county 2. Submit your SAR7 and recertification ON TIME when due 3. Report any household changes accurately when required 4. Keep documentation of all your expenses, especially housing costs and childcare, as these are deductions that can help maintain your benefit level The food allergy situation with your child might also qualify for certain medical expense deductions if prescribed by a doctor. Worth asking your eligibility worker about this.

Thanks for the info! Our recertification isn't due until August, but I'll make sure to submit everything early. We've never claimed medical deductions for my son's food allergies - his doctor did write a letter about it but I didn't know that could help with CalFresh amounts. I'll definitely ask about that!

I had the same problem trying to reach my worker! Called for days and kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Finally tried Claimyr.com and they got me through to a real person in about 20 minutes. They have this system where they wait on hold for you and call when someone picks up. Saved me so much time! They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 - totally worth it when you need to get actual answers from your county worker.

I went through something similar last year when there were rumors about cuts. What ended up happening was that some households saw changes because of the regular COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) calculations, but families with children were mostly protected. The biggest changes affected single adults without dependents. Make sure you're claiming all possible deductions on your CalFresh case: - Rent/mortgage and utilities (use the standard utility allowance if possible) - Childcare expenses while you job hunt - Child support payments if applicable - Medical expenses over $35 for disabled or elderly family members These deductions make a huge difference in your benefit calculation.

We never told them about childcare costs! Didn't know that counted!! Does afterschool program fees count as childcare??

they ALWAYS tryna cut our benefits!!! my benefits got cut twice last year for no reason and i had to fight to get em back. they hope we dont notice or dont fight back. ALWAYS APPEAL if they cut you!!! you have 90 days to appeal and you can keep gettin benefits during the appeal!!!

Did you have to go to a hearing when you appealed? I'm so nervous about doing anything like that, I hate confrontation and get really anxious talking to officials.

To address some misinformation in this thread: CalFresh benefit amounts are calculated using a specific formula based on household size, income, and allowable deductions. There's not a secret agenda to randomly cut benefits. For a family of 4 in 2025, the maximum CalFresh benefit is approximately $1,125 per month. If you're receiving $825, that means your net income after deductions is factored in. The best source of information is always your county office - not rumors or secondhand information. If your income has decreased since you initially applied (such as from job loss), make sure to report that as it could increase your benefits.

Thank you, that's really helpful. I didn't realize the max benefit was that high. I reported my job loss right away in December but maybe I should call and make sure they processed it correctly since we're getting $300 less than the maximum.

im so stressed aobut this 2!! i rely on my EBT for my kids n if they cut it idk what ill do!! my friend said they might make work requirements stricter too for parents?? has anyone heard that??

Work requirements for CalFresh in California currently exempt parents with children under 6 years old, and there have been no announcements about changing this policy. There are always discussions at the federal level about SNAP policies, but any major changes would require legislation and advance notice. California also tends to implement the most flexible policies allowed under federal law to protect families with children.

on a totally diff note - have u tried the food banks?? they got way better stuff now than they used to. i go to the one by the methodist church and they give fresh produce n even meat sometimes. good backup plan if benefits ever get reduced.

I haven't tried food banks before - always felt like they should be for people worse off than us. But maybe I should check them out as a backup. Do they ask for proof of income or anything?

Most food banks don't require income verification - they operate on the honor system! The one I go to just asks you to sign in with your name and how many people in your household. Some have different days for different zip codes but many are first-come-first-served. I was hesitant at first too but the volunteers are really kind and non-judgmental. With your son's food allergies, you might want to call ahead and ask if they ever get specialty items or if they can set aside allergen-free options. Worth checking out 211.org to find locations near you!

I'm really glad I found this thread because I was starting to panic about the same rumors! My mother-in-law keeps sharing scary posts on Facebook about benefit cuts and it's been keeping me up at night. Reading through everyone's responses here has been so helpful - especially the clarification from the nonprofit workers about there being no confirmed cuts right now. I think I'm going to take the advice about calling my caseworker directly to get official information instead of worrying about social media rumors. And I definitely need to look into those medical deductions for my daughter's dietary restrictions - I had no idea that was even possible! Thank you all for sharing your experiences and knowledge. This community is such a lifesaver for getting real information instead of just panic-inducing rumors.

Social media can be such a source of anxiety when it comes to benefits! I'm dealing with the same thing - my Facebook feed is full of scary posts about cuts and changes that may or may not even be real. It's so much better to get information from people who actually work with these programs or have direct experience. I'm also planning to call my worker this week to double-check everything is up to date on my case. Better to be proactive than worry! And yes, definitely look into those medical deductions - seems like a lot of us didn't know about options that could actually help our benefit amounts. Thanks for sharing your perspective, it helps to know others are going through the same worries and finding ways to get reliable information!
