CalFresh 2025 emergency allotments vs. regular benefits - what's happening now?
I'm super confused about our CalFresh benefits this month. My neighbor said we might be getting extra CalFresh again like during COVID, but when I called the automated line it just said my regular amount ($579) is being loaded next week. I have 3 kids and times are really tough right now with rent going up AGAIN. Has anyone heard about extra benefits coming back? Or is my neighbor just confused and we're only getting regular amounts now? Trying to budget for groceries and need to know if I should expect more or if this is it. Thanks!!

•Thanks for replying! Ugh, I figured it was too good to be true. Just was hoping since everything is so expensive these days...

The emergency allotments that gave everyone the maximum benefit amount for their household size ended back in early 2023. CalFresh is only providing regular benefit amounts now based on your income, expenses, and household size. There are no plans to bring back emergency allotments as of 2025. However, there was a cost-of-living adjustment in October 2024, so your regular amount might be slightly higher than last year. If you're struggling, you might want to report any changes that could increase your benefits - like higher rent, childcare costs, or medical expenses for seniors/disabled household members.

•Thank you for the clear explanation! I did get a small increase in October, you're right. I didn't report my rent increase from December though - would that help? It went up $200/month.

•Yes, definitely report that rent increase! In California, you can report increases in expenses at any time, not just at recertification or on your SAR7. Higher shelter costs can potentially increase your benefit amount. You can report this through your BenefitsCal account or by calling your county office.

YOUR NEIGHBOR IS WRONG!!!! The extra SNAP ended YEARS ago and they are NOT bringing it back! I was so mad when they stopped it, my benefits went from $835 to $341 overnight!!! And prices are HIGHER now than during covid but they don't care about us. Call your county and ask about any local food banks instead because CalFresh doesn't go far enough anymore.

•I'm sorry that happened to you too. It's crazy how much groceries cost now vs when we were getting the maximum amounts. I'll look into food banks - good idea.

I had this exact same question last month because my aunt mentioned something about extra benefits. I spent TWO DAYS trying to get through to my county CalFresh office to ask! Kept getting disconnected or waiting forever. Finally I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person in like 20 minutes. They called the county line for me and when a worker answered, they connected me. Worker confirmed there's no emergency allotments anymore, just regular benefits. So your neighbor is confused. If you need to talk to your county office about anything like reporting changes to get more benefits, check out their demo video: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 or go to claimyr.com. Way better than waiting on hold for hours.

•Yeah it actually does! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate. They call and wait on hold for you, then text when someone answers. Better than waiting on hold yourself for hours.

There's some confusion because some states have their own supplemental programs separate from federal SNAP. California doesn't currently have a state supplement though. What can help is making sure ALL your expenses are reported - housing, utilities, childcare, medical for elderly/disabled family members. Many people don't report childcare expenses which can make a big difference. At your next SAR7 or recertification, list every expense! And make sure you're getting the utility allowance too.

•I had no idea childcare could be deducted! I pay $1,200/month for my youngest two kids. My recertification is in 3 months but should I report this now or wait?

•Report it now! Child care expenses are a significant deduction that can increase your benefit amount substantially. You don't need to wait for your recertification or SAR7 to report expenses that could increase your benefits. Call your county worker or submit verification through BenefitsCal.

•That information isn't accurate. There are no county-specific emergency allotments planned for February 2025. All CalFresh benefits are administered under the same federal and state guidelines across all California counties. Be careful with benefit information from social media - it's often outdated or incorrect.

my mom got some kinda extra payment last month but it was from social security not calfresh i think theres some confusion abt different programs maybe??

•That's a good point! Social Security recipients did receive a 3.1% cost-of-living adjustment in January 2025, which might be creating confusion. CalFresh (SNAP) benefits had their own annual adjustment in October 2024, but there are no emergency supplements currently.

Thank you everyone for all the helpful information! I'm going to call tomorrow and report both my rent increase and childcare expenses - had no idea those could help increase my benefits! I appreciate all the advice and clarification about the emergency allotments no longer being available. At least now I can budget accurately knowing exactly what to expect.

•Good plan! Those two expenses can make a significant difference in your benefit calculation. Be sure to have documentation ready - a lease showing the rent increase and receipts or a statement from your childcare provider. Good luck!
