Why am I not getting the extra $10 CalFresh emergency allotment everyone else got?
I'm so confused about my CalFresh benefits this month. My neighbor and my sister both told me they got an extra $10 added to their EBT cards because of some emergency allotment thing, but I didn't get anything extra. We're all in the same county and have similar household situations (single parents with 2 kids). Is there some kind of qualification for this extra amount that I'm missing? I already called the automated number and it just tells me my regular benefit amount. Should I be concerned that there's a problem with my case? Has anyone else NOT received this extra $10 who normally gets CalFresh?

the $10 is only for households already getting max benefits for their household size, do u get the max already?? if not u probably got a different amount

•Wait, I'm confused. I get $625 for me and my two kids. Is that the max? If I'm already at max why would I NOT get the extra $10?

There's been some confusion about this. The $10 emergency allotment is only being given to households that are already receiving the maximum CalFresh benefit for their household size. But it's not automatic - it depends on whether your county has declared a local emergency due to the recent flooding issues. Some counties started distributing it in January 2025, others in February. If your income is too high to receive the maximum benefit amount, you wouldn't get this specific $10 supplement. Instead, during declared emergencies, your benefit is supposed to be temporarily increased to the maximum for your household size, which would be more than $10. Based on what you're saying ($625 for 3 people), you're not receiving the maximum benefit, which is around $780 for a household of 3 in 2025. So you should actually be getting MORE than a $10 increase during an emergency period, not just $10.

•Thank you for explaining! That makes more sense now. So maybe my county hasn't declared this emergency yet? Is there a way to check which counties are giving these extra benefits?

•The variation in who's receiving the emergency allotment isn't random - it's based on specific criteria. If you're having trouble reaching someone at CalFresh, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They'll actually wait on hold with the CalFresh office for you and call you back when a real person is on the line. Saved me hours last month when I had an issue with my SAR7 verification. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

Let me clear up the confusion about this emergency allotment. The $10 minimum emergency supplement was implemented in response to the coastal flooding emergency declared in 13 counties. It only applies to households already receiving the MAXIMUM benefit amount for their household size. If you receive LESS than the maximum benefit (which at $625 for 3 people, you do), then during a declared emergency, your benefit should increase to the maximum amount for your household size (approximately $780 in 2025 for 3 people). This means instead of just $10, you should actually get around $155 extra IF your county has declared an emergency AND if the emergency allotment has been approved for your county. As of February 2025, only these counties are participating: Alameda, Contra Costa, Los Angeles, Marin, Monterey, San Diego, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Sonoma, and Ventura. You can verify if your county has implemented the emergency allotment by visiting BenefitsCal.com or calling your county office. The additional benefits are usually loaded 5-7 days after your regular monthly benefit.

OK so if I understand correctly, since I'm not getting the max benefit already, I should get MORE than $10 if my county is part of this emergency thing? I checked and I'm in San Bernardino county, so maybe that's why I didn't get anything at all? This is so frustrating!

•That's exactly right. Since you're in San Bernardino County, which isn't one of the counties currently implementing the emergency allotment, you wouldn't receive any extra benefits. If your county does get added to the emergency declaration, you should receive a supplement bringing your benefits up to the maximum for your household size (much more than $10).

•The $10 emergency supplement is real, but it's only being distributed in certain counties that declared a state of emergency due to the coastal flooding (13 counties as of February 2025). It's also only for households that already receive the maximum benefit amount for their size. The California DSS website has the official announcement if you want to verify this information.

I had the EXACT same issue!!! I was so confused because my mom got the extra $10 but I didn't get anything. I spent TWO DAYS trying to get through to someone at the county office. When I finally talked to a worker, they explained that my mom gets the maximum benefit amount already (she's a household of 1 with very low income), but I don't get the maximum for my household size (I'm a household of 4). The worker said that if there's an emergency declaration in MY county, I'd actually get a bigger increase (like $200 more) to bring me up to the maximum. But since I'm in Riverside County, we don't have the emergency declaration active right now anyway. It's so confusing how CalFresh does these things without clearly explaining to everyone! They should send letters explaining who gets what and why.

•That makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one confused by this! It's so frustrating when they implement these things without proper communication. Thanks for sharing your experience.
