CalWORKs emergency allotment ending - will $95 supplements continue after March 2025?

I keep getting the CalWORKs emergency allotment of $95 each month on top of my regular Cash Aid, but my worker mentioned something about March being the final month for these extra payments. I'm really dependent on this supplement to make ends meet with my two kids. Is March 2025 DEFINITELY the cutoff date? Has anyone heard if they might extend it again like they did last year? I'm trying to budget for April and don't know if I should count on having that extra money. Getting conflicting info from different sources and getting worried!

Unfortunately yes, March is absolutely the final month for the emergency allotments. This was confirmed in the All County Letter that went out to all CalWORKs offices. The federal authorization is ending and unlike previous times, there's no extension being considered. You should definitely plan for your April budget without that extra $95. If you're concerned about the drop in benefits, ask your worker about other supports you might qualify for - the diaper allowance if you have children under 3, special needs supplements, or if you're participating in Welfare to Work, transportation assistance might help offset some of the loss.

Thanks for letting me know. That's really going to hurt our budget. Do you know if I need to submit any special paperwork for the diaper allowance? My youngest is 2.

My worker told me it might not be the final month!!! She said they're still "discussing" if they can find money in the state budget to continue some version of it. I wouldn't give up hope yet. Someone at the food bank also told me CA might create their own supplement to replace the federal one.

I don't want to dash your hopes, but your worker might be confusing this with the state-level discussions about other benefits. The CalWORKs emergency allotments were specifically tied to the federal emergency declaration that's ending. The All County Letter 25-14 specifically says March is the final month with no provisions for extension. There are no state funds allocated to continue these supplements.

March is definitely the last month. I'm a single mom with 3 kids and I'm freaking out too. That extra $95 pays our cell phone bill. My worker told me straight up to plan for the decrease. It sucks but theres nothing we can do

That's exactly what I use mine for too - our phone bill! I'm going to have to figure something out. Maybe a cheaper plan or something. This is stressful.

I've been through this rollercoaster too many times with CalWORKs. They keep saying "this is the last extension" and then they extend it again. I wouldn't panic yet. The government usually figures out something at the last minute. That's been my experience anyway.

Not this time. My cousin works for the county and says the funding is 100% ending. They're already updating the computer systems to stop issuing the supplements after March. It's really happening this time.

If you're really struggling with getting clear information from your CalWORKs worker, you might want to try Claimyr.com. I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get a straight answer about the emergency allotments ending. I tried calling my county office for days but kept hitting busy signals or getting disconnected. Claimyr got me through to an actual CalWORKs worker in 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE The worker confirmed that March is definitely the final month for the emergency allotments. She also helped me look at my case to see if I qualified for any other supplements or special needs allowances to help offset the loss.

Thank you, I'll check this out. I've been trying to call my worker for 3 days now with no luck. I keep getting the voicemail that says the mailbox is full.

Yes it's ending in March. My benefits letter came today confirming it. BUT if you're getting CalFresh too (not just CalWORKs), you should look into the Restaurant Meals Program if your county has it. That helped me offset some of the loss when they reduced my benefits last time. Also, check with your kids' school - they might have expanded their free breakfast/lunch program which can help save on food costs.

I do get CalFresh too. What's the Restaurant Meals Program? I've never heard of that before. My county is Sacramento if that helps.

Unfortunately, this isn't something you can appeal. The emergency allotments were always temporary and tied to the public health emergency. I know it's really tough timing with inflation. If you haven't had a mid-year adjustment to your regular CalWORKs grant based on income changes, you might want to report any decreased income or increased expenses (like rent) to see if your regular benefit amount could increase.

One thing to know - you should see an increase in your regular CalWORKs grant starting January 2025 due to the annual cost of living adjustment. It's not going to make up for the whole $95, but it should help a little bit. My worker told me the standard 2025 COLA should be around 3.7% which isn't huge but it's something at least.

That's good to know about the COLA increase. Every little bit helps I guess. I'm still going to have to figure out how to make up that $95 gap in my budget though.
