Are emergency CalFresh allotments ($95 extra) still being issued in April 2025?

My client is confused about whether she's getting an extra CalFresh payment this month. I thought the emergency allotments (extra $95 minimum) ended back in March 2025, but then she showed me a text from her friend saying the March emergency allotment is actually being paid in April. Does anyone know if this is accurate? I've checked the CDSS website but couldn't find clear information. Has the emergency allotment program been extended again or is her friend mixing things up with regular benefits? Don't want to give my client incorrect information when she's counting on that money for groceries.

The emergency allotments did end in March 2025. What your client's friend might be referring to is that the LAST emergency allotment was for March, but was distributed in early April (around the 4th). This happens because some counties issue benefits for the previous month in the first week of the current month. But there won't be any more emergency allotments after this final payment. Everyone is now back to regular CalFresh benefit amounts based on their household circumstances and income.

Thank you! That makes sense. So it was the March emergency allotment being issued in April, not a new April emergency allotment. I'll let her know this was the final one so she can budget accordingly.

I'm afraid that information isn't correct. The emergency allotments officially ended with the March 2025 benefit month (which may have been paid in early April). This was announced by CDSS months ago. What your worker might have been referring to is a different adjustment or supplement to your specific case, but the statewide emergency allotments that provided the minimum $95 extra have definitely ended. You can verify this on the CDSS website or by calling the EBT customer service line.

This is SO FRUSTRATING!! They keep changing the rules and don't clearly communicate what's happening! I spent 2 HOURS on hold with my county office last month trying to get a straight answer about these emergency benefits. One worker said they were ending in February, another said March, and now people are saying April?? My family lost almost $200/month when they stopped the emergency allotments and we're really struggling. Does anyone know if they're planning to replace these with ANY kind of increase to regular benefits?? The standard amounts aren't enough with how expensive groceries have gotten!!!

You're right that grocery prices have increased significantly. While there's no replacement for the emergency allotments, there was a cost-of-living adjustment to regular CalFresh benefits in October 2024, which increased amounts by about 8%. If your income has decreased or your expenses have increased (especially housing or childcare costs), it might be worth submitting a SAR7 or reporting these changes to potentially increase your regular benefit amount.

Thanks for the info. I didn't even know about the October increase. Our rent went up $250 last month so I'll definitely report that. Just wish I didn't have to fight through automated phone systems and 3-hour wait times just to talk to someone!

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to CalFresh? I was in a similar situation last month trying to get definitive answers about the emergency allotments ending. Spent days trying to get through the normal phone lines with no luck. A friend told me about claimyr.com and it got me through to a real person in about 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when a real person answers. Saved me so much stress when I needed to get clear answers about my benefits.

Thanks for suggesting this. I've been trying to reach my county office all week for my client. Will definitely look into this service!

Does this actually work??? If it does you just saved my sanity. Gonna try it tomorrow.

I was at my recertification appointment last week and specifically asked about this. The emergency allotments are 100% done as of March 2025. The CalFresh worker said they've been getting tons of calls about this because some people received their final emergency payment in early April (for March benefits) which caused confusion. She also mentioned they're working on updating the messaging in the automated phone system to clarify this, but it hasn't happened yet in my county.

Thank you for sharing this information from your recertification appointment. It's helpful to hear directly from someone who recently spoke with a worker. This confirms what others have said about March being the final month.

To clarify for everyone: The federal legislation that authorized Emergency Allotments for CalFresh (minimum $95 extra per household) officially ended them after March 2025. Here's what's happening: 1. March 2025 was the FINAL month for emergency allotments 2. Some counties issue benefits for a month during the first week of the following month (so March benefits in early April) 3. This is why some people received their final emergency allotment in April 4. There will NOT be any emergency allotments for April or any month after If you need help with getting more benefits due to changed circumstances, you can submit: - A SAR7 (Semi-Annual Report) if it's your reporting month - A "Change Report" through your BenefitsCal account or county office if you've had increased expenses or decreased income - A request for reassessment if you have new medical expenses or dependent care costs You can verify all this information on the CDSS website or by contacting your county office.

This is extremely helpful - thank you for the clear breakdown. I'll share this information with my client so she can understand exactly what's happening with the program ending.
