CalWORKs and CalFresh suddenly discontinued after uploading verification documents - no explanation given

I'm freaking out right now!! I just finished my recertification process last week for both CalWORKs and CalFresh. They requested additional verification docs from me (paystubs and a letter from my landlord). I uploaded EVERYTHING through BenefitsCal within 2 days and have been checking the portal constantly to make sure everything was good. Today I logged in and both benefits say "DISCONTINUED" with no explanation whatsoever! I was 100% counting on my CalFresh coming through on the 9th to feed my kids and the Cash Aid to pay part of my rent. No notice in the mail, no phone call, nothing explaining why. Has this happened to anyone else? Do benefits ever get discontinued even when you've submitted everything? I'm panicking because I have literally $37 left until those benefits were supposed to hit my card.

this happens ALL the time with the county!! its probably bcos they didn't see ur documents even tho u uploaded them. benefitscal is trash and the workers don't check it right. u need to call them ASAP!!! don't wait or you'll miss ur appeal window

I've been calling the customer service number since 8am but it keeps saying "all representatives are busy" and then disconnects! I tried 7 times already. I'm going to lose my mind if I can't get through soon.

First, take a deep breath - this is actually a fairly common issue. When you upload documents to BenefitsCal, they don't automatically get attached to your case. They go into a general document queue, and a worker has to manually review and link them to your case. Here's what you should do immediately: 1. Call your assigned worker directly (not just the main line) 2. If you can't reach them, ask for a supervisor 3. Request an "immediate restoration" explaining you submitted everything on time 4. Ask them to check the BenefitsCal document repository 5. If they verify your documents were uploaded on time, they can reverse the discontinuance This exact scenario is why I always recommend people submit documents in person and get a receipt, or mail them with delivery confirmation. The digital system is not reliable yet.

Thank you for explaining! I don't have my worker's direct number, just the main line that keeps disconnecting me. I didn't know they had to manually attach the documents - that's probably what happened then because I definitely uploaded everything on time. Is there a specific department I should try to reach instead of the main line?

I had something kinda similar happen 2me but it was bcuz they said they sent me a form I never got and when I didnt return it they cut me off. Check ur mail carefully they mightve sent somethin u missed? Alot of times they want the original documents not just uploads

I haven't received anything in the mail asking for anything else. The only notice I got was about the verification documents, which I uploaded right away. I check my mail every day. So frustrating!

I work with CalWORKs clients daily, and this is unfortunately a common issue. Even when you upload documents to BenefitsCal, there's a very specific protocol workers must follow to process them. Here are the real issues that could be happening: 1. Your documents went to the general queue but weren't processed within the timeframe 2. The documents were processed but were deemed insufficient (sometimes they need specific information on paystubs or landlord letters) 3. There was another verification request you missed (possibly sent by mail only) 4. There's a system glitch showing discontinuation when you're actually still pending You need to get through to a human ASAP. The standard customer service line has hours-long waits right now due to recertification season. Try calling right when they open, or 30 minutes before closing when call volume sometimes drops.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I tried calling right at 8am but still couldn't get through. I'm thinking maybe the landlord letter didn't have everything they needed? But they should tell me that instead of just cutting me off completely! I'll try calling again before they close today.

If they discontinued you AFTER requesting more verification and you provided it, they HAVE TO send you a Notice of Action explaining why. It's literally the law. Check your mail tomorrow, but also try calling your local office directly instead of the main customer service line. Sometimes the local offices answer faster.

This is correct. If your benefits were discontinued after you submitted verification, you should receive a Notice of Action (Form NA 960) that explains the specific reason. However, these notices are sometimes delayed in the mail or can be sent after the discontinuance actually happens in the system. If you don't receive a Notice of Action within 3 business days, you have grounds for an appeal based on lack of proper notification.

Have you tried using Claimyr to reach the county office? I was in the exact same situation last month - couldn't get through on the regular line and was about to lose my benefits. A friend told me about this service at claimyr.com that gets you through to a real person at the county office without waiting on hold for hours. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. It seriously saved me from losing my benefits when I had a verification issue. They got me connected to a worker who fixed my case that same day.

I've never heard of that before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point and will try anything to get this fixed before the 9th.

Yes, it definitely worked for me! They basically call the county for you and when they get through to a real person, they connect you. I spent days trying to get through on my own and then got connected in like 20 minutes with them. The worker I talked to was able to see my uploads and restored my benefits right away.

This sounds exactly what happened to my sister!!! The county is SO BROKEN right now. She had to GO IN PERSON to the office and wait for like 4 hours to get it fixed. Bring copies of EVERYTHING you uploaded with dates showing when you submitted them. And if you go in person, get there super early because the lines are crazy. Some offices are letting people make appointments now tho, might wanna check if yours does.

Ugh, waiting 4 hours with kids sounds awful, but I might have to do it. The office is pretty far from me and I'd have to take 2 buses, but if I can't get through on the phone tomorrow I'll just have to go. Thanks for the tip about bringing copies - I'll print everything out tonight just in case.

OP, just checking in - were you able to get through to anyone at the county? If you still haven't reached someone, remember that you have 90 days from the date of discontinuance to request a state hearing if you believe your benefits were incorrectly stopped. The form is called DPA 479, or you can request one by phone at 1-800-952-5253. Also, if you're experiencing an emergency food situation, ask about expedited CalFresh. They can sometimes issue emergency benefits within 3 days if you qualify.

I FINALLY got through!! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked. Got connected to a worker who found my documents in the system but said they were never processed because they got "flagged for review" since I uploaded them as photos instead of scanned documents. They're reprocessing everything now and said my benefits should be restored within 48 hours, and they'll backdate the CalFresh so I don't lose anything. Such a relief! Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!!

So glad you got it resolved! This is exactly why I always tell people to scan documents instead of taking photos when uploading to BenefitsCal. The system flags photo uploads for manual review which can cause huge delays. For anyone else reading this - if you don't have a scanner, most libraries and UPS stores offer free scanning services, or you can use scanning apps on your phone that create actual PDF files instead of just photos. The county workers told me photos often come through blurry or sideways which is why they get flagged. Thanks for updating us OP - stories like this help other people going through the same thing!

This is such helpful information! I had no idea that photo uploads got flagged differently than scanned documents. I've been taking pictures of everything with my phone this whole time and wondering why my cases always seem to take forever to process. Do you know if there are any other formatting requirements that cause delays? Like does the file size matter or certain file types work better than others?
