Will I still get December's emergency allotment if my CalFresh shows 'discontinued' status?
Really stressing out here! Just checked my BenefitsCal account and it's showing my CalFresh status as 'discontinued' even though I swear I've sent in all the paperwork they asked for during recertification. Every time I call the county, they tell me something different is missing - first it was paystubs, then verification of rent, then something about my son's school enrollment. It's beyond frustrating! I know California is supposed to issue those extra emergency allotment benefits this Sunday for December. My question is - if my regular benefits are showing as discontinued but I'm fighting to get it fixed (going in person to the county office tomorrow), will I still get the emergency allotment? My kids are counting on that extra food money for the holidays and I'm panicking. Has anyone dealt with this before? Do they issue the emergency benefits separately from regular benefits?

Unfortunately, if your case shows as discontinued, you won't receive the emergency allotment for December. The emergency allotment is only issued to households with an active CalFresh case for the month. When you go to the county office tomorrow, bring EVERY possible document they might need - all income verification, rent/mortgage documentation, utility bills, school enrollment, medical expenses if applicable, etc. Ask specifically for an 'expedited reapplication' given your circumstances. If they can reactivate your case tomorrow, you might still get the benefits on time, but it depends on their processing speed.

•Omg this is awful news. My kids were counting on this food. I thought since I submitted everything before the deadline it would be ok. Does anyone know how fast they can reactivate a case at the office? Should I ask for a supervisor right away?

•3 times?! I can't afford to miss that much work! Did they eventually give you back benefits for the time it was wrongly discontinued?

There's actually a bit more nuance to this situation that might give you some hope. If your discontinuance was due to an administrative error (meaning you actually did submit everything on time but they didn't process it correctly), you can request what's called a "restoration of benefits" when you get your case reactivated. This could potentially include the emergency allotment. When you go to the office tomorrow: 1. Bring a detailed list of everything you've submitted and when 2. Ask to speak with an Eligibility Worker, not just front desk staff 3. Clearly explain that you submitted everything before deadlines 4. Request an immediate case review and same-day resolution 5. If they confirm documents were missing, provide them immediately 6. Ask for written confirmation of your case status before leaving One thing many people don't know is that CalFresh has a policy called "Adequate and Timely Notice" - they're required to give you specific written notice about what's missing and time to provide it before discontinuing benefits. If they didn't do this properly, mention that specifically.

•Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I definitely did NOT get any specific notice about what was missing - just the generic "your recertification is incomplete" letter. I'll bring this up tomorrow and ask about the restoration of benefits. Really hoping this works!

Sorry your going through this! The system is messed up! My advice call and talk to the supervisor directly don't waste time with the regular workers they will just run u around. The emergency benefits drop into you're account separate from regular benefits but only if you're still active

•Just to clarify - while the emergency allotments do show separately on your EBT transaction history, they're only issued to households with active cases. They don't process emergency allotments separately from regular eligibility determinations. So solving the discontinuance issue is the only way to receive the emergency allotment.

I've been through this exact nightmare before and I discovered a service called Claimyr that literally saved my sanity when dealing with CalFresh phone issues. Instead of waiting on hold for hours, the service called and waited on my behalf, then connected me directly to a CalFresh worker when they answered. Saved me hours of frustration and helped me get my case resolved before visiting the office. Check them out at claimyr.com - there's a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 I'd still recommend going to the office tomorrow as you planned, but this might help you get answers faster if you need to call again. They got me through to a real person in about 20 minutes when I was facing a 3+ hour wait.

•Yes! I was skeptical at first but it actually connected me to an eligibility worker. Saved me from having to use my phone minutes to stay on hold.

When you go to the office tomorrow, make sure you get a receipt for ANY documents you provide them with. I've had them claim they never received documents I handed directly to workers. And double-check what county office you're going to - some counties have multiple locations and only certain ones can help with CalFresh issues. TBH I'm not hopeful about you getting the emergency allotment on Sunday if your case shows discontinued today. But they CAN issue benefits retroactively once your case is fixed, so you should still get the money eventually if you qualify.

•Thank you for the advice! I'll definitely get receipts for everything. We really need the food this week though, not in weeks from now after they process everything 😞

One other thing to consider: If you absolutely cannot get your case resolved immediately, ask about emergency food resources while you're at the county office. They should be able to refer you to food banks and emergency food assistance programs in your area to help bridge the gap until your benefits are restored. Also, be sure to ask about your "good cause" for not completing the recertification if they claim you missed documents. If you can demonstrate you had good cause (never received notices, submitted but they lost documents, medical emergency, etc.), they may be more likely to expedite your case restoration.

•I'll definitely ask about emergency food resources - thank you! And the good cause makes sense. I have a copy of the fax confirmation for some of the documents they claim they never received, so hopefully that helps prove my case.

This happened to me in October. The recertification process is a NIGHTMARE - they made me submit the same verification docs THREE SEPARATE TIMES claiming they never received them! When I finally got to speak with a supervisor, turns out everything had been in my file the whole time but wasn't properly "tagged" in their system. Here's what worked for me: I asked for an "expedited restoration" based on immediate need (I have kids too) and they were able to reactivate my case and issue benefits within 48 hours. Don't leave the office until you have something in writing about when your benefits will be restored. RE: the emergency allotment - in my case, they added it retroactively about a week after my regular benefits were restored. So while you might not get it Sunday, you should still receive it eventually if you get your case sorted soon.

•This gives me hope! I'm going to specifically ask for an "expedited restoration" tomorrow. I can't believe how often they lose documents that were definitely submitted. My kids are going to be so disappointed if we don't have enough food for the holidays.

UPDATE: Just got back from the county office and wanted to share what happened in case anyone faces something similar. It took 3 hours of waiting but I finally got to speak with a worker. Turns out they had ALL my documents the whole time but hadn't "processed" them in the system! The worker was actually really helpful and apologized for the confusion. They reactivated my case on the spot and said my regular benefits should load onto my EBT card within 24-48 hours. For the emergency allotment, she said it might not come on Sunday with everyone else's, but that it would be added within 7 days after my case was reactivated. She also provided me with information about a local food bank I can use in the meantime. The lesson I learned: ALWAYS keep proof of submission for everything, and don't assume they've actually reviewed what you've sent. And sometimes you just have to show up in person to get anything resolved.

•I'm so glad you got this resolved! This is unfortunately a common issue with county processing - documents get received but not properly indexed in their system. For future reference, whenever you submit documents, call a few days later to confirm they were not only received but properly processed and associated with your case. Thanks for updating us on the outcome!

•So typical of them! Glad you got it fixed though. This exact same thing happens to SO many people during recertification. The system is broken. But at least you'll get your benefits soon!
