Will I still get supplemental CalFresh benefits on the 25th if my regular benefits are cut off?
Really worried about my CalFresh situation right now. I got a notice saying my benefits might be discontinued next month because I missed my recertification interview (totally my fault, had a family emergency). I'm scrambling to reschedule but here's my question - even if they cut off my regular benefits, will I still receive the supplemental CalFresh payment that usually hits my EBT card on the 25th? My family really depends on that extra amount. Has anyone dealt with this before? Will the supplemental benefits come through separately or are they tied to my regular benefits status?

the supplemental benefits are tied to your regular benefits, if ur cut off you wont get the supplement either. they go together

I've been through this situation before. The supplemental benefits you're referring to are actually part of your regular CalFresh allotment - they're not separate benefits. CalFresh issues benefits over the first 10 days of the month for regular benefits. If you're getting something on the 25th, it could be one of three things: 1. Emergency expedited benefits (if you recently applied with very low income) 2. A county adjustment or correction to your regular benefits 3. Or possibly you're confusing CalFresh with another program If your CalFresh benefits are discontinued, you won't receive any benefits until you complete the recertification process. Call your county office ASAP to explain the missed interview and request a new appointment. You typically have 30 days from the discontinuance to get reinstated without having to reapply completely, but the sooner you fix it, the less likely you'll have a gap in benefits.

•Thank you for such a detailed response! You're right, I'm getting confused. The payment on the 25th must be from the P-EBT program for my kids, not from regular CalFresh. So that might continue? But either way I need to fix my regular CalFresh ASAP.

P-EBT is completely different from CalFresh!! That's why you're confused. P-EBT is for school kids and is separate. You'll still get that regardless of your CalFresh status because they're different programs!!!

•Thank you for clarifying! That's actually a huge relief. Still going to fix my CalFresh situation but at least I know my kids will have something.

From my experience working with several clients in similar situations, here's what you need to know: 1. As others mentioned, P-EBT is entirely separate from CalFresh. It's administered by a different department and won't be affected by your CalFresh status. 2. For your regular CalFresh benefits, you need to act quickly. California allows for something called "good cause" restoration if you missed your recertification interview due to circumstances beyond your control. A family emergency might qualify. 3. You'll want to contact your county office to explain the situation and reschedule your interview. Make sure to mention the family emergency as the reason for missing the original appointment. 4. If your benefits do lapse, and you complete the recertification within 30 days of discontinuance, they can often restore benefits back to the beginning of the month, avoiding a gap. 5. Be prepared to provide all verification documents they request - pay stubs, rent receipts, utility bills, etc. Having these ready will speed up the process.

•I had a similar situation and the "good cause" thing really works! Just make sure you have some kind of proof of your family emergency if possible. Like a doctor note or something. Makes it easier to get approved.

Had THIS EXACT PROBLEM last year and spent DAYS trying to get someone at the county on the phone. Kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold for hours. Finally I tried using Claimyr.com and it was literally the only way I got through. They called the CalFresh office for me and when they got someone, they called my phone to connect us. Saved me so much stress! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 Definitely worth it to get your recertification fixed before you lose benefits completely.

•Thank you for the tip. I've been trying to call all morning and just keep getting the automated system. I'll check out that site because I'm getting desperate at this point!

am i the only one who thinks its ridiculous we have to jump through so many hoops just to keep our benefits? i missed ONE interview last year and had to go 2 months without any food stamps because of all the back and forth. the system is literally designed to cut people off.

Quick update on P-EBT since there seems to be some confusion: The 2025 P-EBT program has changed somewhat from previous years. Benefits are typically issued quarterly now rather than monthly, and the amount depends on how many school days your children qualified for free/reduced lunch. So those payments on the 25th might be something else entirely. To clarify your CalFresh situation, I'd recommend checking your EBT account online through the BenefitsCal website or app. It will show exactly which program each deposit came from, which should help clear up any confusion about which benefits are at risk.

•Thanks for the extra info! I logged into BenefitsCal and you're right, the payment on the 25th last month was labeled as "CAPI benefits" which must be from my mom who lives with us and gets disability assistance. So that should continue, but I still need to fix my regular CalFresh. I've scheduled another interview for tomorrow morning.

Don't forget to ask for expedited benefits when you do your interview! If your income is low enough they can issue benefits within 3 days. They don't always tell you this option exists but it's your right to request it if you qualify!

•Great point about expedited services. To qualify, your household's income and resources must be under certain limits: - Monthly income under $1,700 for most households in 2025 - Less than $375 in liquid resources (cash, bank accounts) - Monthly housing costs that exceed your income and resources The county worker should screen for this automatically, but it never hurts to specifically ask if you qualify for expedited service.

UPDATE: I had my interview this morning and explained the family emergency situation. They're going to restore my benefits under the 'good cause' provision! The worker said there might be a slight delay, but I should get my full benefit amount for next month. She also explained that the payment I get on the 25th is actually from the CAPI program for my elderly mother who lives with us, not P-EBT or CalFresh. So that would have continued regardless. Thank you everyone for your help and advice! And special thanks to whoever recommended Claimyr - that's the only reason I got through to reschedule my interview so quickly.

•So glad it worked out for you!! The system is complicated and it's easy to get confused between different benefits. Glad you got it straightened out!

That's awesome news! Really happy to hear they approved the good cause restoration. It's such a relief when the system actually works in our favor for once. Your story will probably help other people in similar situations too - knowing that family emergencies can qualify for good cause and that there are resources like Claimyr to help get through to the county offices. Thanks for posting the update!

•This is such a great outcome! As someone new to navigating the CalFresh system, it's really helpful to see how this all played out. I had no idea about the "good cause" provision or that there were services like Claimyr to help get through to county offices. The fact that you were able to get your benefits restored and figured out which program was providing those 25th payments shows how important it is to ask questions and get clarity. Thanks for sharing your experience - definitely bookmarking this thread for future reference!
