CalFresh benefits terminated despite submitting renewal online - system error?
I'm beyond frustrated right now. I completed my CalFresh recertification through BenefitsCal almost 5 weeks before my deadline. Got confirmation emails and everything showing my submission was complete. Just checked my EBT balance yesterday expecting my February benefits ($387) to be loaded and NOTHING. Called the automated line and it says my case is DISCONTINUED as of January 31st due to 'failure to submit recertification paperwork'! How is this possible when I have email proof I submitted everything on December 20th? Has anyone dealt with the online system messing up like this? Do I need to reapply all over again or is there a way to get them to fix this quickly? My kids and I rely on these benefits and I can't wait another 30 days for a new application to process.

This happens ALL THE TIME with the online system!! I had the exact same problem last year. The county systems often don't sync properly with BenefitsCal. Don't reapply - call your county office and tell them you have proof you submitted on time and they need to reinstate your benefits. Ask for immediate restoration since this was THEIR error not yours. Make sure to have your confirmation email ready to read to them.

You def need to call them ASAP! Did you upload all the verification documents they needed or just submit the form? Sometimes ppl think they finished everything but missed uploading proof of income or something.

•I uploaded EVERYTHING - pay stubs for both jobs, rent receipt, childcare expenses, even my utility bills even though they didn't specifically ask for those. The confirmation email literally said "Your recertification for CalFresh is complete" so I don't see how I could have missed anything?

This is a very common issue with the CalFresh system. What's happening is that sometimes the online submissions through BenefitsCal don't properly transfer to the county worker's system (called C-IV or CalSAWS depending on your county). Here's what you need to do: 1. Call your county CalFresh office first thing tomorrow morning 2. Explain that you completed recertification online before the deadline and have proof 3. Request a "restoration of benefits" due to agency error 4. Ask them to check if your documents are visible in their system 5. If they can see your submission, they should be able to reopen your case without you reapplying 6. Request retroactive benefits for any months missed If you can't get through on the phone (very likely), you may need to go in person to the office with your proof of submission. Don't take no for an answer - this is their error and they are required to fix it.

•Thank you so much for the detailed steps. I've been trying to call all morning but keep getting the "call volumes are high" message and then it hangs up. Is there any way to skip the phone queue or get priority? I'm worried about waiting days just to talk to someone.

Hey there! I work at a community organization that helps people with benefit issues. This happens constantly with the online system. One trick I've found is using Claimyr.com to get through to the county CalFresh phone lines. It basically waits on hold for you and calls you back when a real person is on the line. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 Make sure to tell the worker you need an "administrative restoration" due to a "system error" - those are the magic words that usually get them to expedite fixing it. And be sure to mention you have email proof of timely submission. Good luck!

•Thank you! I just checked out that video and I'm definitely going to try Claimyr tomorrow. At this point I'll try anything to get this fixed quickly. I appreciate the tip about what specific words to use too - I wouldn't have known to say "administrative restoration."

OMG the EXACT same thing happened to me 2 months ago!! I did everything online and even got the confirmation but still got cut off. When I finally got through to my worker (took 3 days of calling non-stop), they said they could see I had started the recertification but it showed as "incomplete" in their system even though BenefitsCal said it was complete. Such a broken system!!! They made me resubmit everything but at least backdated the benefits once it was fixed.

did u sign the recert form? sometimes ppl forget to esign it and that makes it incomplete even tho u uploaded all docs

•Yes, I definitely e-signed it. I remember having to check all those boxes at the end and clicking the signature field. That's why I'm so confused about how this happened.

The problem is that there are TWO systems that don't talk to each other properly. When you submit online through BenefitsCal, it's supposed to transfer to the county system (CalSAWS), but sometimes the transfer fails and your worker never sees it even though you got a confirmation. It's TOTALLY their fault, but of course we're the ones who suffer. Make sure when you call to ask them to check BOTH systems for your documents.

•This is exactly right. And to add to this - while you're waiting to get this resolved, if you're in an emergency food situation, you can contact your local food bank or call 211 to find emergency food resources. Also, when you do speak with your CalFresh worker, ask if you qualify for expedited services for the reactivation of your case, which could get benefits back within 3 days instead of waiting for the standard processing time.

•I might have to do that if I can't get through on the phone. It's just hard with my work schedule and I have to find childcare which costs money... money I don't have because my benefits got cut off! Such a vicious cycle.

Update us after you get through to them! I'm curious if they'll fix it right away or give you the runaround. In my experience they usually fix it when you have proof, but sometimes they make you jump through so many hoops first.

•I'll definitely post an update once I get this resolved. Going to try calling again tomorrow using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above, and if that doesn't work I'll have to take time off to go to the office in person on Friday. This whole situation is so stressful!
