Can CalFresh help with diapers for my special needs daughter with genetic disorder?

My 2-year-old daughter has a rare genetic disorder that causes her to need diapers far longer than typical kids. The doctor says she might need them for years to come, and honestly, the cost is killing our budget. We're on CalFresh already (about $650/month for our family of 4), but I was wondering if there's any way to get help specifically for diapers through CalFresh or any related program they might know about? The regular diaper banks only give like 50 diapers a month which barely covers a week for her because of her condition. Has anyone successfully gotten help with this kind of situation? Our monthly diaper expense is nearly $300 which is eating up almost half our food benefits.

Thanks for replying. That's what I thought but wasn't sure if there was some exception for medical reasons or something. It's so hard to keep up with these expenses.

You're right that CalFresh benefits can't be used for diapers since they're strictly for food purchases. However, since your daughter has a documented medical condition, you have a few options: 1. Apply for CalWORKs if you haven't already - they provide cash aid that CAN be used for diapers and other necessities 2. Check if your daughter qualifies for Medi-Cal's Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit which might cover specialized diapers as DME (Durable Medical Equipment) due to her genetic condition 3. Contact your regional center through California Department of Developmental Services - they often provide additional support for children with genetic disorders 4. Ask your daughter's doctor to write a medical necessity letter for diapers, which you can then submit to Medi-Cal Hope this helps! The key is documenting the medical necessity.

Thank you so much for this detailed info! We do have Medi-Cal but I never thought to ask about diapers through them. I'll definitely talk to her doctor about writing that letter. We're not on CalWORKs yet because my husband works part-time, but maybe we should apply? The regional center is also new info for me - will look into that tomorrow!

That's really good to hear! Did you need anything special to apply for the regional center help? Like paperwork or referrals?

I've been in a similar situation with my son who has special needs. Something else to try - call 211 and ask specifically about diaper assistance programs for children with medical conditions. In our county, they have a special program that provides up to 200 diapers monthly for kids with documented medical needs, which is separate from the regular diaper banks. Also, I've been trying to reach our Medi-Cal worker for WEEKS about getting incontinence supplies covered and kept getting stuck in phone hell. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person at the county in about 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 Good luck - I know how expensive and stressful this can be!

Thank you! I've never heard of 211 having special diaper programs - definitely calling them tomorrow. And thanks for the Claimyr suggestion too. I've literally hung up after an hour on hold with Medi-Cal before because I had to pick up my kids. Will check out that video!

Just to add one more resource that hasn't been mentioned yet: If your daughter qualifies for SSI (Supplemental Security Income) due to her genetic disorder, that monthly payment can be used for diapers and other necessities. The qualification process is separate from CalFresh and can take time, but it's worth applying if her condition is severe and long-term. Additionally, some medical supply companies will work directly with Medi-Cal for recurring diaper delivery if you get the proper authorization. This route typically requires: 1. Diagnosis documentation from her specialist 2. A prescription specifically for medical-grade diapers 3. Completion of a Medi-Cal Treatment Authorization Request (TAR) The process isn't quick, but once established, you can receive monthly deliveries without reapplying.

We actually tried for SSI last year but were denied because my husband's income was just over the limit. Maybe we should try again though. The medical supply company idea is brilliant - I had no idea that was even possible! I'll definitely ask her specialist about this at her next appointment.

My cousin gets diapers thru medi-cal for her kid with cp. BUT they dont cover the nice kind like Pampers only the cheap medical ones that arent as good. Better than nothing tho. Just wanted to warn u so ur not disappointed when they send them. Also took FOREVER to get approved like 3 or 4 months.

Everyone has given you great advice about getting diapers, but I also wanted to mention - if you're tight on food budget because of spending so much on diapers, you might qualify for more CalFresh benefits than you're currently receiving. When they calculated your benefits, did you make sure to report all your medical expenses related to your daughter's condition? These are deductible for CalFresh purposes and can increase your benefit amount. When it's time for your next SAR7 or recertification, bring documentation of all medical expenses (including travel to medical appointments, special dietary needs, prescriptions, etc.) and make sure your eligibility worker counts them as deductions. This won't help with diapers directly but might give you more food benefits to offset some of your other costs. Also, don't forget to check with her medical specialists - sometimes they have access to foundation grants specifically for families in situations like yours.

Wow, I had NO idea we could count medical expenses for CalFresh! We're spending about $400/month on her medications and special foods that insurance doesn't fully cover, plus all the gas driving to specialists in the city (about 70 miles each way). Our recertification is actually next month so this is perfect timing. Thank you so much for this information!

That's a good idea. I hadn't thought about churches. We're not religious but I'm willing to try anything at this point. Thank you!
