Can CalFresh help with rental assistance for pregnant mom with toddler?
I just got notified my rent is going up next month and I'm panicking. I have a 2-year-old and I'm 5 months pregnant, working part-time at a daycare. My landlord is raising rent by $250 and there's no way I can afford it on my current income. Can CalFresh benefits help with rent at all? Or is there some way to get more food benefits so I can put my other money toward rent? I'm already getting $425/month in CalFresh but it barely covers our groceries. Are there specific programs for pregnant women that might help with housing costs? Getting desperate here as I don't want to have to move while pregnant.

Hi there, I'm sorry you're in this situation. Just to clarify - CalFresh is specifically for food benefits only and can't be used directly for rent. However, there are definitely rental assistance programs you might qualify for! Look into: 1. Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) - though waitlists can be long 2. California Emergency Rental Assistance Program 3. CalWORKs - since you have a child and are pregnant 4. WIC - extra food benefits for pregnant women and children under 5 Also, being pregnant actually might qualify you for increased CalFresh benefits since they consider your unborn baby as part of your household in the later stages of pregnancy. I'd recommend contacting your county office to report this change if you haven't already.

•Thank you so much! I didn't know my pregnancy might get me more CalFresh. I'll definitely call about that. I've heard of WIC but wasn't sure if I could get both WIC and CalFresh? And I tried applying for Section 8 last year but the waitlist was like 3 years long 😩 I'll look into the Emergency Rental Assistance though! Never heard of that one.

When I was pregnant last year I got WIC *and* CalFresh at the same time. WIC gives you specific foods like milk, cheese, cereal, beans while CalFresh you can use for anything food-related. Definitely apply for WIC ASAP!!!!

•That's good to know! I'll apply for WIC tomorrow. Did you get more CalFresh benefits once your baby was born? I'm trying to figure out how much more we might get after the baby comes.

Just FYI - most counties have something called "Housing Support Program" through CalWORKs that specifically helps pregnant women and families with children find and pay for housing. You'd need to apply for CalWORKs first (cash aid) and then ask about the Housing Support Program. They can sometimes help with security deposits, rent, and even utility payments depending on your situation. Definitely worth looking into since you're pregnant with a toddler.

•This!!! When my cousin was pregnant they actually paid her first/last/deposit on a new apartment through that program!! But you have to specifically ASK about it because the workers don't always mention it.

•Try using Claimyr.com - it's this service that waits on hold with the CalFresh office for you and then calls you when an actual person answers. Saved me literally HOURS last month when I needed to update my household info. They have a video demo here if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

Here are the correct 2025 income limits for CalWORKs which might help you get rental assistance: For a household of 2 (you + toddler): $1,982/month gross income For a household of 3 (you + toddler + counting pregnancy): $2,452/month gross income And when your baby is born, you'd be a household of 3 officially: $2,452/month For CalFresh, the income limits are higher - for a household of 3, the gross monthly income limit is around $3,500 in 2025. Definitely report your pregnancy at 7 months (third trimester) to get increased CalFresh benefits! And apply for CalWORKs which can provide cash aid plus access to their Housing Support Program.

•Thank you so much for these specific numbers! I make about $2,100/month right now so it looks like I should qualify for CalWORKs if they count my pregnancy! This is super helpful.

•they dont always count pregnancy for calworks tho, depends on the county. i had to wait until my baby was actually born to get the higher amount. just FYI so ur not counting on money that might not come thru right away

•I didn't think of 211! I'll try them tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion about churches too - there's a big one near me that might have some emergency assistance.

if ur getting calfresh already you NEED to report ur pregnancy on the SAR7 or recertification form when it asks about household changes. they wont know unless u tell them. also check the pregnancy resource centers nearby they sometimes help with rent or can connect u with places that do

•Thank you! My SAR7 is due next month so I'll definitely include the pregnancy info. Do you know if I need to provide any proof like a doctor's note?

Just to follow up - once you report your pregnancy (after 7 months along) and after your baby is born, make sure to update your CalFresh case. For a household of 3 in 2025, the maximum CalFresh benefit is around $770/month instead of $425. Also, since housing costs affect CalFresh benefits, if your rent does increase, report that too! Higher rent can sometimes qualify you for higher CalFresh benefits because it reduces your "net income" in their calculations. This is called the "excess shelter deduction.

•Wow, that would be almost double what I get now! I had no idea the rent increase might actually help with getting more food benefits. This gives me hope that we might be able to make things work. Thank you so much for all this information!

I was in a similar situation last year and ended up applying for everything at once through BenefitsCal.com - you can apply for CalFresh, CalWORKs, and Medi-Cal all in the same application. Made things way easier than doing separate applications. The CalWORKs Housing Support Program ended up being what saved us from eviction.

•That's really encouraging to hear! I'm going to apply through BenefitsCal tonight. Can I ask how long it took to get approved for the Housing Support Program after you applied for CalWORKs? I'm hoping they can help before my rent increase kicks in next month.

•@Ella Harper It took about 3-4 weeks from when I submitted my CalWORKs application to when they approved me for the Housing Support Program. But here s'the key - I had to specifically ASK about it during my eligibility interview! The worker didn t'mention it automatically. Once I asked, they fast-tracked the housing assistance part because I was facing eviction. Make sure to mention your urgent situation pregnant (+ rent increase + toddler when) you apply - they have emergency procedures for cases like yours.
