CalFresh housing assistance options - need rental help while waiting for benefits approval

I just applied for CalFresh 2 weeks ago but I'm really struggling with my housing situation right now. My landlord raised rent by $375 (from $1650 to $2025) starting next month and I'm seriously worried about getting evicted if I can't figure something out. The EBT worker mentioned there might be some housing programs I could qualify for while waiting for my CalFresh approval, but didn't give me any details. Does anyone know what programs are available in 2025 for rental assistance that work alongside CalFresh? Also need some legal advice about the rent increase - is there a legal aid office that helps with tenant rights for low-income families? I have 2 kids and we can't afford to move right now. Thanks for any help!!

CalFresh itself doesn't provide housing assistance, but there are programs you can apply for separately. Look into Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) through your local housing authority, though there's usually a waitlist. For immediate help, try Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) - they can sometimes help with back rent and upcoming payments if you're at risk of eviction. For legal questions, contact Legal Aid in your county. They specifically help low-income families with tenant rights issues and can advise if that rent increase is legal (some cities have rent control ordinances limiting increases).

Thank you! I didn't realize CalFresh was separate from housing programs. Do you know if being on CalFresh helps qualify me faster for any of these housing programs? And is there a specific number to call for ERAP or do I need to go through my county office?

That rent increase is RIDICULOUS!! My landlord tried pulling the same stunt last year - $400 jump out of nowhere!! Check if your city has rent control ASAP before paying anything. Also the waitlist for Section 8 is like YEARS long now so don't count on that for immediate help tbh

yea section 8 is backed up everywhere, my cousin applied in 2023 and still waiting. but some counties have emergency priority lists if ur facing eviction

I went through something similar last year when waiting for my CalFresh to be approved. Try calling 211 - it's a resource hotline that can connect you with local rental assistance programs. Some programs specifically help families with children. For legal help, Google \

I'll definitely call 211, thanks! I had no idea they'd take housing costs into account for CalFresh. My interview is scheduled for next Wednesday, so I'll make sure to bring my lease and rent receipts.

Just to add to what others have said, each county has different emergency housing programs. When I was struggling last year, I found Catholic Charities and Salvation Army sometimes have rental assistance funds that don't have long waitlists like government programs. Also, make sure when you're talking to your CalFresh worker that you ask about CalWORKs if you have kids - it provides cash aid that can be used for housing.\n\nAnd quick tip: if you're having trouble reaching anyone at the county to ask about these programs, try using Claimyr.com to get through faster. Saved me hours of waiting on hold when I needed to reach my benefits worker. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

I've been trying to reach someone at the county for 3 days with no luck, so I'll definitely check out that service. And I didn't even think about CalWORKs! Do you know if I can apply for that even if I'm already in the middle of a CalFresh application?

Yes, you can absolutely apply for CalWORKs even while your CalFresh application is being processed! They're separate programs but usually handled by the same department. The nice thing is the verification documents you submit for one program can often be used for both, saving you some paperwork. Definitely mention you want to apply for both when you reach someone.

i was in ur same situation bout 6 mos ago. try connecting with the housingiskey.com website, they still have funds in some counties even tho some ppl say the program ended. also check with ur utility companies cuz most have income-based programs that can cut ur bills in half which helps free up $$ for rent.

Thank you so much! I've never heard of the Housing Support Program before. I'll definitely ask about it during my CalFresh interview next week. Just called 211 like someone suggested and they're connecting me with three possible resources tomorrow.

BTW they're SO SLOW processing CalFresh right now!! My recertification took 45 days when they're supposed to do it in 30. Keep calling and bugging them or they'll just let your application sit there!!!

Just to update you on some 2025 changes - California expanded the Bringing Families Home program this year, which helps families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and are involved with the child welfare system or eligible for CalWORKs. If you have children and are at risk of losing your housing, mention this specific program to your worker.\n\nAlso, make sure to submit your Maximum Family Grant (MFG) exemption form with your CalWORKs application if you decide to apply. This ensures all your children are counted when calculating your benefit amount. The Housing and Disability Advocacy Program (HDAP) might also be worth looking into if anyone in your household has a disability.

This is incredibly helpful information! I had no idea about the Bringing Families Home program or the MFG exemption. I'll write these down to discuss during my interview. Thank you so much for taking the time to share all this.

Hey Javier, I'm in a similar situation with rent increases and waiting for benefits. One thing that helped me was contacting my local Community Action Agency - they often have emergency rental assistance funds that move faster than county programs. Also, if you're in a city with rent stabilization laws, document everything about your rent increase (date of notice, amount, etc.) because some cities require 30-60 days notice for increases over certain percentages. The Tenant Protection Act might apply to your situation too. Don't forget to ask your CalFresh worker about the Homeless Assistance Program if you end up facing actual eviction - it can sometimes provide immediate help with first month's rent if you have to move. Good luck with your interview next week!

Thanks Kelsey! I hadn't heard of Community Action Agencies before - that sounds really promising since you mentioned they move faster than county programs. Do you happen to know if there's a way to find my local one online or should I ask when I call 211 again? Also really appreciate the tip about documenting the rent increase details. I got the notice exactly 15 days ago so I'm hoping that might work in my favor if there are timing requirements. Definitely going to ask about the Homeless Assistance Program too - better to know about it now than scramble later if things get worse.
