CalFresh income limits for family of 3 with disability and newborn in 2025?
Can anyone tell me what the income limits are for CalFresh for a family of 3 in 2025? My situation is complicated - my husband works full-time ($3,200/month), I'm on disability sick leave (still waiting for first payment), and we have a 5-month-old baby. Our rent is $2,100 and utilities around $350. I tried calling the county office twice but got disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes! Will my husband's income disqualify us even though I'm not getting any disability payments yet? Also confused if my baby's formula costs count as a deduction? Really need some help with groceries right now.

For 2025, the gross monthly income limit for a household of 3 is $3,660 for regular CalFresh. But since you have a household member with disability (yourself), you might qualify under different rules where they only count net income after deductions. The baby formula won't count as a deduction, but your shelter costs (rent + utilities) do, and they're quite high which helps your case. You should definitely apply! Your situation with pending disability and a young child makes you potentially eligible even with your husband's income. When you apply, make sure to submit proof of your disability status and all your housing expenses.

•Thank u so so much!!! I didnt know about the different rules for disability. Do they count my disability as income even though im not getting any payments yet? And does WIC for the baby affect CalFresh?

im in similar boat but 2 kids. its confusing because my worker told me one thing then the website said different numbers!! what helped me was bringing ALL paperwork to the interview - rent receipts, utility bills, pay stubs, bank statements, everything! they will tell u what they need. better to bring too much than not enough lol

Just to clarify on the income limits - in 2025 for a household of 3: - Gross monthly income limit: $3,660 - Net monthly income limit: $2,820 But since you mentioned disability, your household may be considered "categorically eligible" which means they don't apply the gross income test, only the net income test. They'll deduct: - 20% of earned income - $193 standard deduction for household of 3 - Excess shelter costs over 50% of adjusted income - Dependent care deduction if applicable Since your husband makes $3,200 and your shelter costs are $2,450 total, you have a good chance of qualifying after deductions. No, they won't count disability income until you actually receive it.

•thats not true for everyone tho, my brother got denied last year even with disability cuz his wife made too much but they still had to calculate something weird called "deemed income" or something like that. the rules are super complicated

u should use Claimyr to get through to a real person at the county office! i was in ur same situation trying to call for days and nobody picked up. i found this service at claimyr.com that calls them for you and gets a real person on the line, then calls you back. saved me hours of waiting! they have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 seriously a lifesaver for getting someone to answer your specific questions.

Go ahead and apply NOW, dont wait. With rising grocery costs and a baby you need every bit of help. Use BenefitsCal.com to apply online, way easier than calling. They make u upload documents but its faster than mailing stuff. The income limits others posted are right but they count so many deductions that most people qualify with even higher incomes. And if u get approved for any amount, even $20, it automatically makes your child eligible for other programs too.

•What other programs could we get? We're already on WIC but its not enough for all our needs honestly

When I applied last year they looked at my SSI income and my boyfriends work income seperately, so dont assume u wont qualify. Every household is calculated different based on who buys and prepares food together and its really confusing!!!! Make sure u tell them ur actual household situation exactly. And when u do the interview MAKE SURE u mention the baby formula and high rent costs. Even if formula isnt a deduction they should know ur struggling. I got $380/month for my family which really helps.

•Just to correct one technical point - baby formula isn't counted as a deduction for CalFresh calculations, but if they're receiving WIC, that can help with some formula costs. The CalFresh benefit amount is based on household size, income, and allowable deductions (shelter, childcare, etc.), not specific food needs. But you're absolutely right that explaining their full situation during the interview is important!

To answer your follow-up question: no, they won't count disability income until you actually receive payments. And regarding WIC - receiving WIC benefits does NOT affect CalFresh eligibility or benefit amounts. They're completely separate programs and you can (and should) get both if eligible. Once you're on CalFresh, your child may also automatically qualify for: - Free school meals when they're older - Reduced-price internet services - Discounted museum/zoo admissions with your EBT card - Farmers market match programs that double your benefits when buying fresh produce

Good luck with your application! One more tip - when you upload documents to BenefitsCal, make sure all pages are clear and readable. I had to resubmit my rent lease twice because the photos were blurry. Also keep copies of everything you submit in case they ask for something again. With a baby that young and your housing costs being so high, you should definitely qualify for a decent benefit amount. The whole process took about 3 weeks for me from application to getting my EBT card in the mail. Hang in there, you're doing the right thing applying!

•Thank you so much for the tip about clear photos! I didn't even think about that but makes total sense. I'm nervous about the whole process but everyone here has been so helpful. Hoping we hear back soon - groceries are getting so expensive with the baby and everything. I'll definitely keep copies of all the documents too!
