CalFresh worker called from 800 number but left no message - lost EBT card or account breach?
I'm slightly panicking here. Just got a missed call from a CalFresh worker (at least that's what my phone ID said - it was from their 800 number). They didn't leave a voicemail or explain what they needed. I've got two situations going on right now and I'm not sure which one they're calling about: 1) I lost my EBT card about 10 days ago but haven't had time to report it missing or request a replacement (been working crazy hours) 2) I got that weird email about the CalFresh data breach a few weeks ago but didn't think I needed to do anything Anyone know why they'd call out of the blue? Will they keep trying to contact me or am I supposed to call back that general number and somehow get to the same worker? I'm worried they're going to cut my benefits if I don't respond, but I HATE navigating that phone system. Ugh.

When they call from the 800 number, it's usually automated on their end - the worker just clicks a button and it dials you. You won't be able to call back and reach the same person directly. In my experience, they ONLY call for one of these reasons: 1. Missing verification documents 2. Discrepancies in your reported info 3. Suspected fraud (sorry to be blunt) 4. Your recertification is coming due and they have questions I doubt it's about your lost card - that's handled by the EBT customer service, not CalFresh workers. And definitely not about the data breach - that's handled at a higher level. You should call back the main number and expect to wait. When you get through, just explain you got a call from them and need to know why. They'll look up notes on your case.

•Suspected fraud??!! Omg now I'm really freaking out. I swear I reported all my income correctly. Could it be because of the card? Like if someone found it and has been using it? I didn't report it missing so technically it's still active...

Dont panic about fraud!! The County calls ALL THE TIME for stupid little things. Last month they called me bcuz they needed to verify my new address even tho i already updated it online. The system is BROKEN!!!!! One hand never knows what the other is doing. 😡

•That makes me feel a little better. But now I'm stressed about calling back and waiting forever. Last time I called I was on hold for 2 HOURS and then got disconnected when they transferred me.

I'm a former eligibility worker, and I can tell you that you absolutely need to call them back ASAP. Here's why: 1. For your lost EBT card - you need to call the EBT customer service line (not the county) at 1-877-328-9677 to report it lost and deactivate it. Anyone who finds your card can use it until you report it stolen, and that money won't be replaced. 2. The call from the worker could be about your Semi-Annual Report (SAR7) or recertification coming due. They sometimes call to remind clients when important paperwork deadlines are approaching. 3. It could also be that they need additional verification for something on your case. If you don't respond to their requests (even if you didn't get the message), they can and will discontinue your benefits. They're required to make an attempt to contact you, but if you don't respond, that's on you unfortunately.

•Thank you for this detailed info! My SAR7 isn't due until August (I think), but maybe there's something else. I'll call the EBT line first to report my card, then tackle the county office.

You might want to try using Claimyr to get through to CalFresh faster. It holds your place in line so you don't have to stay on the phone the whole time. I was skeptical at first but it actually helped me get through to a real person in about 15 minutes instead of waiting for hours. You can check out how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 and the website is claimyr.com. I used it when I had a similar situation with a missed call from my worker and needed to figure out what was going on urgently.

•That sounds like a lifesaver. I'll check it out right now because I absolutely can't sit on hold for hours with my work schedule. Thanks for the tip!

The data breach thing was legit - my caseworker confirmed it when I mentioned it during my recertification interview last week. But they're not calling individual recipients about it. That's handled through official notices only. Do you have your BenefitsCal account set up? Sometimes you can see notices or tasks there that might explain why they're trying to reach you. It's worth checking before you spend time on the phone.

•I do have a BenefitsCal account but I haven't logged in for a while. Just checked and there's nothing unusual showing up there. No new notices or tasks. So weird!

DEFINITELY report that lost EBT card immediately! Call 1-877-328-9677. They can issue a replacement and cancel the old one. If someone's using your card, I hate to say it, but that money is probably gone. CalFresh doesn't usually replace benefits that were stolen via card usage (as opposed to actual account hacking).

•This happened to my sister last year. Someone found her card and spent $347 at a grocery store in a different city before she realized it was missing. She filed a police report and everything but CalFresh said they couldn't replace the benefits. So unfair!! Report it NOW.

•My recertification isn't until November, I just did it last November. But maybe they're REALLY planning ahead? 😂

Since you've confirmed there's nothing in your BenefitsCal account and your recertification/SAR7 aren't due, my professional guess is that it's one of two things: 1. There's been income reported to the system (through quarterly wage matching) that doesn't match what they have on file 2. They're doing a random quality control review (yes, these happen) Either way, you need to call them back. And definitely take care of that lost EBT card immediately. Those are two separate issues with two different phone numbers: - EBT Card: 1-877-328-9677 - CalFresh Case: Your county office

•I did switch jobs about 2 months ago, but I reported it on the change report form they sent me. I think I need to call both numbers tomorrow. Thanks for helping me understand what might be happening!
