CalFresh benefits suddenly reduced to $0 - need urgent help reaching EBT customer service
I'm seriously panicking right now. My CalFresh benefits were suddenly reduced to $0 this month with absolutely NO warning or explanation. My family literally has no food and I've been struggling for almost 3 weeks now. I've called the number on the back of my EBT card at least 10 different times, but it's just an endless loop of automated messages and transfers that lead nowhere! I always get disconnected or sent back to the main menu. I even tried going to BenefitsCal website but the only thing I can see that might help is the 'Apply' button - would submitting a new application do anything? Or just mess things up more? I'm at my wit's end and my kids are hungry. Does ANYONE have a direct number to a real person at the county office? Or any advice on how to actually get help? At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything.

Don't submit a new application - that could actually complicate things further since you already have an active case. There are a few reasons your benefits might have dropped to $0: 1) You might have missed submitting your SAR7 (Semi-Annual Report), 2) Your income might have been reported higher than the threshold, 3) A verification document was requested but not received, or 4) There was a system error. The best way to resolve this is to speak directly with your county worker. Do you have their direct number from previous communications? If not, call your county office's main line early in the morning (right when they open) as that's typically when wait times are shortest.

•Thanks for the advice. I definitely didn't miss any SAR7 - I'm super careful about that after learning the hard way last year. And my income hasn't changed at all (I wish it had!). I don't have my worker's direct number and I've tried calling the main office multiple times but can never get through... it's so frustrating!! I'll try calling right when they open tomorrow though.

•Oh man, that sounds awful. Did they backdate your benefits once you got it sorted out? I'm worried about missing so many weeks of food assistance. And thanks for the tip about repeatedly calling. I'll set my alarm for tomorrow morning and just keep redialing.

This is unfortunately a common issue - it could be what's called an administrative discontinuance. Sometimes the system incorrectly flags accounts or misses processing submitted documents. In California, if your benefits were erroneously stopped, you have 90 days to get them reinstated without having to reapply. Here's what I recommend: 1. Visit your county office in person if possible - bring ID and your case number 2. Request an "Expedited Services" review due to your emergency food situation 3. Ask specifically for a "Notice of Action" explaining why your benefits were reduced to $0 4. If they verify it was an administrative error, request retroactive benefits for the weeks you missed Also, while you're dealing with this, please check if your local food bank can provide emergency assistance. Call 211 for immediate food resources in your area.

•Thank you SO much for this detailed information. I didn't know about the 90-day reinstatement period or the Expedited Services review. The nearest county office is pretty far from me and I don't have reliable transportation, but given how serious this is, I'll find a way to get there. I'll definitely ask for that Notice of Action document too - that sounds important. And great idea about calling 211, I'll do that right away.

THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED TO MAKE US GIVE UP!!!! They do this on purpose to save money. Cut people off and make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach anyone. Same thing happened to my sister and when she FINALLY got through they said "oops our mistake" but she went 6 weeks with no food benefits!!! And they wonder why people hate dealing with government programs?????

•While I understand your frustration, and these errors definitely happen, I don't think there's an intentional conspiracy to cut people off. The system is understaffed and overloaded, which causes these problems. But you're right that the impact on families is severe regardless of the cause, and 6 weeks without benefits is unacceptable.

I had a similar nightmare situation last month and finally found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual CalFresh worker after trying for days on my own. It's basically a service that waits on hold for you and then calls you when they get a real person. Saved me HOURS of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and there's a demo video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 Once I finally got through to a worker, they told me my benefits had been reduced because they thought I missed an appointment that I never even knew about! They fixed it on the spot and reinstated my benefits. Definitely worth trying if you keep hitting dead ends with the regular phone lines.

•Wow, I've never heard of a service like that before, but it sounds exactly like what I need right now. I'll check out that website and video. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get this resolved. Did they backdate your benefits for the time you missed?

•Yes! They backdated everything once I explained I never received any notice about the appointment. The worker I spoke to was actually really helpful once I finally got through. They also put a note in my file about preferring text notifications since I told them I never got the mail about the appointment.

•That's a good point - I'll go through all my mail from the last month again to make sure I didn't miss anything. I haven't reported any changes though, everything's been exactly the same with my job and housing situation.

I work for a community organization that helps people with CalFresh issues. Here's what I suggest: 1. First, check BenefitsCal more thoroughly - look under "Messages" and "Task" sections, not just the main dashboard. There might be a pending verification request you missed. 2. If your recertification period ended recently, that could be the cause. You would need to complete a full recertification rather than just a regular SAR7. 3. In the meantime, while you're sorting this out, please contact these emergency food resources: - Your local WIC office if you have children under 5 - School food pantries if your children are in school - Call 211 for immediate food assistance locations - Check FoodFinder.us for nearby food pantries Don't give up on reaching your county office. If you can't visit in person, keep calling, but vary the times you call - sometimes mid-afternoon has shorter wait times than mornings.

•Thank you! I just checked the Messages section on BenefitsCal and found something I hadn't seen before - there's a message about "Additional Information Needed" from 3 weeks ago! It's asking for pay stubs that I thought I'd already submitted. I'm going to upload them right away. I would have NEVER seen this if you hadn't pointed me to that specific section of the website. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

btw if ur really desperate and cant wait for bureaucracy check out the local churches too, they often have food pantries that dont ask questions or need appointments

•That's a really good suggestion, thank you. There's a church down the street from me that I think does a food distribution on Wednesdays. I'll check with them tomorrow.
