Thanks everyone for your help! My benefits did load today and my regular PIN worked perfectly fine. Such a relief! I'm going to let my neighbor know too so she doesn't keep spreading wrong information. I appreciate all of you taking the time to clear this up for me.
So glad everything worked out for you! It's really frustrating how these false rumors spread and cause so much unnecessary anxiety, especially when people are already stressed about making ends meet. You did the right thing asking here - this community is great for getting accurate information. Maybe we should pin a post about common CalFresh myths to help prevent this kind of confusion in the future?
That's a really good idea about pinning a post with common myths! I'm new here but I can already see how helpful this community is. I was actually worried about the same PIN thing after hearing it from someone at the grocery store. It's amazing how quickly misinformation spreads, especially when people are already anxious about their benefits. A pinned FAQ post would definitely save people a lot of stress!
I wanted to add some important information about the consequences of the county's delay. When your application is finally approved, you should receive benefits retroactive to your application date. Make sure to keep all grocery receipts during this waiting period as evidence of your food expenses. If they don't automatically backdate your benefits to your application date, cite the MPP Section 63-503.13 which mandates retroactive benefits for delayed applications. Also, don't be discouraged from applying for emergency CalFresh (expedited service) even at this point - you can still request it if you meet the criteria mentioned earlier. The county must conduct an expedited service screening for all applications regardless of how the application was submitted.
I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - been waiting 7 weeks for my CalFresh interview in San Bernardino County. Reading all these responses is both helpful and frustrating because it confirms this isn't just bad luck, it's a systemic problem. I had no idea about the 30-day federal requirement or that I could request expedited processing. @Sofia Martinez I really hope you get this resolved soon. It's unconscionable that people are being forced to choose between rent and food while bureaucrats sit on applications. I'm going to try calling every day like @Yara Khoury suggested and specifically ask about expedited service. We shouldn't have to become experts in government regulations just to get basic food assistance, but here we are. Has anyone had success with contacting their county supervisor's office? I'm wondering if political pressure might help move things along faster.
@Liam Fitzgerald I actually tried contacting my county supervisor s'office about 3 weeks ago! They were surprisingly responsive and said they d'look "into it but" honestly I haven t'seen any movement yet. Maybe it takes time for political pressure to work its way through the system? It s'definitely worth trying though - the more people who complain to elected officials about these delays, the more likely something might actually change. 7 weeks is absolutely ridiculous for San Bernardino too. It s'like they re'running a contest to see which county can make people wait the longest. I m'definitely going to try the daily calling strategy starting tomorrow. Good luck with your situation!
Welcome to the group! You're definitely not alone in this confusion - the EBT system can be really confusing when you're new to it. Everyone here has given you excellent advice already. I just wanted to add that when you do call to update your information, make sure to ask them to walk you through exactly how your current benefit was calculated. Sometimes caseworkers miss deductions during the initial application process, especially if the interview was rushed. With $2,200 rent + $1,100 childcare for a family of 3, you should definitely be getting more than $66/month unless your income is quite high. Don't feel bad about not knowing this stuff - the system is complicated and they don't always explain it well during the application process!
Thank you so much for the warm welcome! This group has been incredibly helpful already. I'm feeling much more confident about calling tomorrow to get my benefits recalculated. It's such a relief to know that other people have been through this same confusion. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to explain everything so clearly - I was honestly worried I was missing out on some secret way to get cash from my food benefits! 😅 Will definitely update everyone once I get this sorted out.
Hey LilMama23! Don't worry, this is actually one of the most common questions we see here - you're definitely not alone in the confusion! 😊 The midnight withdrawal posts are referring to CalWORKs cash aid, which is totally separate from CalFresh food benefits. Your $66 CalFresh can only buy food, never cash. But honestly, $66 for a family of 3 sounds way too low! With $2,200 rent and $1,100 childcare, you should probably be getting several hundred dollars more per month. Those childcare costs alone should bump up your benefits significantly. Definitely call and get that updated ASAP - you might be missing out on a lot of grocery money that your family really needs! The Claimyr suggestion is solid too if you're having trouble getting through to your county office. Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes! 💪
Thanks Nia! This whole thread has been such an eye-opener for me. I had no idea I was potentially missing out on so much in benefits just because I didn't know about all these deductions. Everyone here has been so helpful and patient with my questions. I'm definitely going to try calling tomorrow (maybe with that Claimyr service if the regular line is too busy) and make sure they have all my expenses documented properly. It's amazing how complex this system is - I wish they explained all this better during the initial application process! Really grateful to have found this community. 🙏
This is such a helpful thread! I'm new to CalFresh and had no idea about these produce incentive programs. Reading through everyone's experiences, it sounds like the key things to remember are: 1) It's extra money on top of your regular benefits, 2) Can only be used for fresh fruits/vegetables, 3) Each location works differently (farmers markets vs grocery stores), and 4) You might need to ask specifically about it since not all cashiers know about the programs. Going to check if my local farmers market participates this weekend!
Welcome to the community! You've got a great summary there. One thing I'd add - when you check with your farmers market this weekend, ask them what their current match rate is since it can change based on funding. Some do dollar-for-dollar matching up to a certain amount, others do 50% match. Also, if they participate, they'll usually have signs posted or info at their main booth. Good luck and enjoy getting those extra fresh fruits and veggies for your family!
@Keisha Robinson That s'a perfect summary! I just wanted to add that if you re'shopping at grocery stores that participate, it s'worth downloading their app or signing up for their loyalty program first - like @Sofia Price mentioned with Mother s Market.'Some stores require that step before the produce incentives will work automatically at checkout. Also, keep your receipts! It s helpful'to track how much incentive you re getting'each month since there are usually monthly limits. Hope your farmers market visit goes well!
Just wanted to add something that might help with budgeting - I've been using CalFresh for about a year now and participate in Market Match at my local farmers market. One tip I learned the hard way: the produce incentive money usually expires at the end of each visit/transaction, so you can't save it up like your regular benefits. At farmers markets, if they give you $20 in wooden tokens, you need to spend those tokens that same day or you lose them. This is different from your regular CalFresh balance which rolls over month to month. So when planning your shopping, make sure you can actually use all the bonus produce money in one trip! Also, some markets have seasonal variations - mine does higher match rates during summer when local produce is abundant. Worth asking about!

I've been through this exact situation before! The good news is that county systems do keep detailed call logs, and most workers document everything as they go. When you call back, they should be able to pull up notes from your previous call and see exactly where you left off. Here's what worked for me: I called back the next day and explained that my call dropped during the confirmation number part. The worker was able to see that the previous worker had already submitted the benefit restoration request in the system. My benefits were back on my card within 48 hours. Pro tip: Write down the date, time, and case worker's name (if they give it) for future reference. Also, some counties send text notifications when benefits are loaded, so keep an eye on your phone! You've got this - the system isn't perfect but they do want to help get your benefits restored.

•Thank you for the pro tip about writing down the worker's details! I wish I had thought of that during my first call. It's really encouraging to hear that your benefits were restored within 48 hours even after the call dropped. I'm definitely going to ask about text notifications too - that would be so helpful to know when the benefits are actually loaded instead of constantly checking my card balance. Your advice gives me confidence that this will work out!

This is so frustrating! I had something similar happen where my phone died during an important call with the county. From my experience, they definitely keep records of all calls in their system - it's required for documentation purposes. When you call back tomorrow, have your case number ready and tell them exactly what time you called yesterday. Ask them to look up the case notes from that specific call. The worker you spoke with likely already started processing your benefit restoration before the call dropped, so there's a good chance it's already in progress. If for some reason they can't find the record (which would be unusual), don't let them brush you off. Ask to speak with a supervisor and explain the situation. Your benefits are important and they should work with you to resolve this quickly. Also, check your EBT card balance periodically over the next day or two - sometimes benefits get restored faster than they tell you. Good luck, and I hope you get this sorted out soon so you can get groceries for your kids!

•This is really solid advice! I'm definitely going to have my case number ready and ask them to look up those specific call notes. It's reassuring to hear that the documentation requirements mean they should have a record. I like your suggestion about checking my EBT balance periodically too - I've been so stressed about this that I keep checking it anyway! Hopefully the worker already got the restoration process started before my phone died. Thanks for the encouragement about not letting them brush me off if they can't find the record. Sometimes you have to advocate for yourself with these systems.
