Need CalFresh customer service number to check application status - urgent!
Been waiting 3 weeks for my CalFresh application to process and my family is getting desperate for groceries. Lost the paper with the county office number and now I can't get through to anyone! Does anyone have the direct number to call CalFresh workers? The main website just gives me a general number that puts me in an endless loop of automated messages. I've already tried calling the EBT customer service but they said they can't help with application status. Really need to get this resolved before the end of the month!

For LA County, the DPSS Customer Service Center number is 866-613-3777. But honestly, good luck getting through to an actual person. They're completely overwhelmed right now with the 2025 benefit adjustments. You might need to physically go to your local DPSS office if you need immediate help with your application status.

•Thank you!!! Will try that number tomorrow morning. Really don't want to go to the office if I can avoid it - last time I waited 4 hours with my kids and still didn't get seen.

I was in a similar situation last month with my CalFresh renewal and discovered a service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a human at the county office. You visit claimyr.com and they basically wait on hold for you then call you when they have an actual person on the line. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Worth it when you're desperate to talk to someone about your benefits!

The phone system is COMPLETELY BROKEN in every county!!! I've been on CalFresh for 5 years and it gets worse every time I need to contact them. They expect people who are literally hungry to spend hours on hold??? Disgusting treatment of vulnerable populations. And don't get me started on how they'll discontinue your benefits without proper notice then make YOU jump through hoops to fix THEIR mistakes.

•While I understand your frustration, I do want to point out that legally they can't discontinue benefits without providing notice. If this happened to you, you can file for a state hearing within 90 days and potentially get retroactive benefits. The form is called DPA 479.

Instead of the main number, try calling your specific eligibility worker if you have their direct extension. It should be listed on any notices you've received from them. Also, did you apply through BenefitsCal? You can check your application status and sometimes communicate with them through messages on that portal too.

•I do have BenefitsCal but whenever I log in it just says "pending" with no other details. Been like that for weeks. And I don't think I was assigned a specific worker yet? At least not that I know of.

I work in adjacent services and can tell you that CalFresh applications must be processed within 30 calendar days by law (or 7 days if you qualify for expedited services). If you're approaching that 30-day mark, you should mention that specifically when you call. Also, make sure you've submitted all verification documents they've requested - income proof, identity verification, rent/utility expenses, etc. Missing documents is the #1 reason applications get delayed. Check your BenefitsCal dashboard and mail for any notices requesting additional information.

•This is really helpful, thank you! I'm on day 21 now. I submitted everything they asked for (pay stubs, rent agreement, utility bills) when I first applied. Maybe something got lost? I'll definitely mention the 30-day requirement when I call.

•You're welcome! One more tip: when you call, take notes of who you spoke with (name/ID number), what they said, and the time/date. This documentation can be really important if there are any issues later. Good luck!

UPDATE: I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked! Got through to a person at LA County within 40 minutes (after trying for DAYS on my own). Turns out they needed my latest pay stub but the notice got lost in the mail. I uploaded it directly while on the phone and the worker said my application should be processed within 48 hours. Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions!

•Great news! Make sure to set up text or email alerts in your BenefitsCal account so you don't miss future communications. Much more reliable than waiting for physical mail.
