FAFSA stuck at 'Information being verified by SSA' for our whole family - normal wait time?

We submitted our FAFSA last week and now we're getting this message for ALL of us: 'your information is still being verified by the social security administration....' This message shows up for me, my husband, and our son (the student). Is this normal? How long does the SSA verification usually take? We're worried because the priority deadline for my son's top choice school is coming up in 3 weeks. Should we just wait or is there something we need to do to speed this up? Has anyone else dealt with this SSA verification step?

This happened to our family too. The SSA verification took about 10 days for us. Apparently it's a normal part of the FAFSA process where they match your name/DOB/SSN with Social Security records. As long as all the info you entered matches your social security cards exactly, you should be fine. But if there's even a tiny discrepancy (like a hyphenated last name or middle initial issue), it can cause problems.

Thank you! That's reassuring to hear. I'm just nervous because my son's name is hyphenated on his birth certificate but not on his SS card. I hope that doesn't cause issues. Did you have to do anything to move the process along or just wait?

is anyone else annoyed that they made all these changes to FAFSA and now everything takes 10x longer?? last year my daughters application took like 3 days to process but now were at 2 weeks and still waiting on this SSA verification thing!!

Yup!! It's ridiculous! And I can't even get through to anyone on the phone to ask questions. Been on hold for hours multiple times.

The SSA verification is standard for the 2024-2025 FAFSA. With the new changes to the application, processing times have increased significantly. The primary things to verify: 1. Names match EXACTLY how they appear on Social Security cards (including hyphens, suffixes like Jr/Sr) 2. DOB matches SSA records 3. SSN correctly entered If any of these don't match, you'll need to contact Federal Student Aid. Though be prepared - phone wait times are extremely long right now. Regarding your priority deadline - if you're concerned, contact the financial aid office at your son's top choice school and explain the situation. Most schools are aware of the FAFSA delays this year and may make accommodations.

Thank you for the detailed response! I just double-checked and realized my son's hyphenated last name might be the issue since his SS card doesn't have the hyphen. Should I call FSA to fix this or will it eventually resolve on its own?

Unfortunately, you'll likely need to contact FSA to resolve the name discrepancy. The system is looking for an exact match with SSA records. If you submitted with a hyphen that doesn't exist on the SS card, it will probably remain stuck in verification until corrected.

I went through this SSA verification thing last month and it took 17 days to clear! Nobody told us it would take that long. I almost missed my school's priority deadline because of it. Definitely contact your school's financial aid office ASAP and let them know what's happening. Most schools are being flexible with FAFSA deadlines this year because the whole system is a mess.

17 days! That's way longer than I expected. I'll definitely contact the school tomorrow. Did you do anything special to get it resolved or did it just clear up on its own eventually?

Nope, just had to wait it out. Super frustrating. They don't give you any progress updates either - it just suddenly changed status one day.

The SSA verification process is indeed normal and required for all FAFSA applications. Average processing times this year are ranging from 7-21 days, significantly longer than previous years due to the FAFSA Simplification Act changes. Important things to know: 1. Name discrepancies are the #1 reason for extended verification periods. This includes hyphens, spaces, and suffixes. 2. If you believe there's a mismatch between your FAFSA entries and SSA records, you should contact Federal Student Aid directly to request a correction. 3. For your priority deadline concerns: Most institutions have implemented flexibility this year specifically because of these known FAFSA processing delays. Contact your financial aid office directly with your FAFSA confirmation number to document that you've submitted before their deadline. I recommend calling FSA directly if you're approaching week 2 of waiting. However, the phone lines are extremely backed up right now.

I've been trying to call FSA for THREE DAYS and can't get through!!! Either busy signals or disconnects after waiting for hours. This is absolutely ridiculous! 😡

I had the same problem trying to reach them! I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually get through to a FAFSA agent without the wait. They've got a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Saved me hours of frustration when we had an SSA verification issue with my daughter's application. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was wrong and how to fix it.

Thank you for the detailed information! Based on everyone's comments, it sounds like I should contact FSA about the hyphen issue rather than just waiting. And I'll definitely reach out to the school's financial aid office to let them know about the situation.

One more thing I forgot to mention - make sure to check your FAFSA account every day. They don't always send email notifications when the status changes. Our verification cleared but we didn't get any notification.

Good tip! I've been checking obsessively anyway because I'm so worried about meeting that deadline. Fingers crossed it resolves soon!

A MONTH?? omg now im really panicking. we cant afford college without financial aid and if we miss the deadline because of this stupid verification thing im gonna lose my mind!!

If you've been waiting that long, there's likely a specific issue with your application. The standard verification shouldn't take a month unless there's a data mismatch. You might want to check if names, DOBs, or SSNs were entered differently than they appear on Social Security records.

Pro tip: I took screenshots of our FAFSA submission confirmation page and sent it to our school's financial aid office when we got stuck in this SSA verification thing. They noted in our file that we had submitted before the deadline, so we wouldn't be penalized for the processing delay. Most schools understand this is happening to everyone this year.

That's brilliant! I'm going to do that right away. Thank you for the suggestion!

does anyone know if this SSA verification thing happens every year or is it just because of the new FAFSA changes? never had to deal with this before

The SSA verification has always been part of the FAFSA process, but it was mostly invisible to applicants in previous years because it happened immediately during submission. With the new FAFSA Simplification Act implementation, they've changed how verification works, which is why it's now a visible separate step that takes longer. It's essentially the same check, just implemented differently in the new system.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! My family's FAFSA has been stuck at SSA verification for 8 days now. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring and terrifying at the same time. It sounds like the hyphen issue is really common - I just realized my daughter has a hyphenated middle name on her birth certificate but her SS card just has the first part. Based on what everyone is saying, I think I need to: 1) Call FSA about the name discrepancy (though good luck getting through!), 2) Contact the schools directly with our submission confirmation, and 3) just keep checking the portal daily since they don't always send notifications. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - at least we know we're not alone in this mess!

You're definitely not alone! I'm new here but going through the same nightmare. My family has been stuck for 6 days now and I'm getting really anxious about our deadlines too. The hyphen thing seems to be a huge issue - I'm wondering if we should try to get our Social Security cards updated to match our birth certificates, or if it's easier to just correct the FAFSA? Has anyone tried both approaches? Also, does anyone know if there are certain times of day when it's easier to get through to FSA on the phone? I feel like I'm calling at all the wrong times!
