FAFSA identity verification taking forever after parent info change - normal wait time?
I seriously messed up my FAFSA application and now I'm stuck in identity verification hell. About 3 weeks ago, I noticed I made some errors on my parents' income section, so I went back and corrected it. BIG MISTAKE. Now I'm getting this message saying they need to verify our identities before processing can continue. I uploaded the documents they asked for (drivers license, social security card for both me and my mom) like 2 weeks ago, but the status is still showing as "verification pending." Has anyone else dealt with this? Is this normal wait time for identity verification after changing parent info? My college needs my SAI score by April 1st for scholarship consideration and I'm FREAKING OUT.

•4 WEEKS??? I'm gonna miss my school's deadline at that rate! Did you call them or anything to speed it up?

Unfortunately, verification delays are particularly bad this year with the new FAFSA Simplification rollout. Any changes to parent contributor information will trigger identity verification as a fraud prevention measure. The current processing time is averaging 18-25 business days according to FSA. You should contact your college's financial aid office immediately and explain the situation - most institutions have adjusted their internal deadlines to accommodate these FAFSA delays and may offer you a deadline extension for scholarship consideration.

•Thank you! I'll email my school's financial aid office today. Do you know if I need to contact each school I applied to, or will they all see that my application is delayed for verification reasons?

•Yes, you should contact every school where you're seeking financial aid. While they can see your application is in verification, they won't automatically know you're concerned about scholarship deadlines. Each school has different policies for handling these situations, so individual communication is essential.

I had to wait FIVE WEEKS for verification after changing my mom's W-2 information!!! The system is completely broken this year. I ended up missing priority deadlines at two schools and lost about $6000 in potential scholarships. The whole FAFSA Simplification thing is a JOKE.

•I'm sorry you lost scholarship opportunities - that's awful. But students should know there IS a way to reach an actual FAFSA agent who can sometimes expedite verification in hardship cases. I was stuck in verification for weeks until I used Claimyr to get through to a real person at FSA. It connected me in about 10 minutes when I'd been trying for days. The agent was able to review my documents while I was on the phone and cleared the verification flag that same day. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - definitely worth checking out their website at claimyr.com if you're facing a deadline.

weird question but did you submit your parents tax return transcripts or just the W-2s? cuz i think if you only did W-2s they make you verify identity but if you do the IRS data retrieval tool it might go faster??? idk thats what my cousins financial aid advisor told her

•I submitted both W-2s and the tax return, but I didn't use the IRS data retrieval tool because my dad has a small business with Schedule C income. Maybe that's why they're being extra careful?

Identity verification after parent information changes is standard procedure, especially with the new FAFSA system implemented for the 2025-2026 aid year. The verification process has three distinct steps: document submission, review queue, and manual verification. The longest part is typically the review queue, which currently has a backlog due to system changes. Some important facts to know: 1. Your submission date determines your place in the verification queue 2. Calling FSA directly won't change your queue position, but can confirm if your documents were received properly 3. Schools CAN create exceptions for students with pending verification if you provide documentation of the delay 4. Schedule C business income will trigger additional verification steps as you suspected I recommend taking these actions immediately: 1. Email proof of your verification status to all schools' financial aid offices 2. Request a conditional review based on your previous year's information 3. Ask specifically for a "verification delay consideration" for scholarship deadlines 4. Check your FAFSA portal daily for status updates

•This is SO helpful! I didn't realize schools could do conditional reviews while waiting for verification. I just called my top choice school and they said they can extend my scholarship deadline by 3 weeks as long as I provide them the verification status screenshot. Thank you!!!

when i was waiting for identity verification last month i kept checking the wrong section of the website lol. make sure ur looking under "verification status" and not "processing status" cause they're different things!! took me 2 weeks to figure that out 🤦♂️

•Wait WHAT? There are two different status sections?? Let me go check right now...

•OMG you're right!! I just found the verification status section and it shows "Review Complete - Pending Processing" which is different than what I was seeing before! Does that mean they actually verified our identities already?

•Yes, "Review Complete - Pending Processing" means your identity verification is finished! The system is now recalculating your SAI based on the corrected information. This typically takes 3-5 business days to complete and update your schools. Make sure to check your "Messages" section in the portal as well, as they sometimes send notifications when important status changes occur.

I had this identity verification thing happen when I changed my dad's retirement contribution information. So frustrating!!! But here's what I learned - they actually have different verification TYPES. Identity verification is actually faster than income verification. You might also be in regular verification which is different from identity verification. Get on their website and under the documents section it should tell you exactly what type you're in.

•This is 100% correct. The regular verification takes FOREVER but identity verification is faster. And if you're in both (like I was) you're basically screwed for meeting any deadlines unless you can get someone on the phone to help you. Good luck with that though - I spent 3 hours on hold before getting disconnected.

After dealing with this exact issue last month, I learned there's a specific number you can call for identity verification issues: (800) 433-3243. Choose option 1, then 4 for verification issues. The wait times are horrible though - I spent 2+ hours on hold and then got disconnected twice. I eventually used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a FAFSA agent in about 15 minutes. The agent was able to manually verify my documents while I was on the call and cleared the hold within 24 hours. They have a video showing exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Totally worth it when you're facing scholarship deadlines.

•Thanks for the specific number! I think I've been calling the general helpline which probably explains the endless hold times. I'll try the verification-specific line tomorrow morning.

does anyone know if changing ur parents income from the FAFSA worksheet estimates to the actual tax return numbers counts as changing parent info?? i haven't submitted yet but now im worried

GalaxyGazer
•That's actually a good question. Minor adjustments when moving from estimates to final tax numbers typically don't trigger verification if the change is within reasonable margins (generally less than 10-15% difference). However, if you're concerned, the safest approach is to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when available instead of manually entering tax information. This greatly reduces the chance of verification flags.

Update on verification timelines: I just attended a financial aid administrator conference last week, and the Department of Education representatives confirmed they've added additional staff to address the verification backlog. They're now processing identity verifications from approximately 12-15 business days ago. So if you submitted two weeks ago, you should see movement very soon. For anyone still waiting, make sure all your documents are clearly legible - poor image quality is the number one reason for verification delays.

•Thank you for the insider information! I just checked again and my status changed to "Processing" which I hope means they're finally calculating my SAI. Fingers crossed it comes through before my extended deadline!

Just wanted to share my experience for anyone else dealing with this nightmare! I was stuck in identity verification for 3 weeks after correcting my mom's employment info. What finally helped was calling first thing in the morning (8 AM EST) when they open - the hold times were much shorter. I also made sure to have my FSA ID, Social Security number, and confirmation number from my document uploads ready before calling. The agent was able to see that my documents were "under review" and gave me a more specific timeline. Hang in there - it's incredibly stressful but most schools are being understanding about these delays this year!

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! The timing tip about calling at 8 AM is really helpful - I've been trying to call in the afternoons when everyone else is probably doing the same thing. I'm going to try first thing tomorrow morning with all my info ready. It's reassuring to hear that schools are being understanding about these delays. This whole process has been so stressful but reading everyone's experiences here makes me feel less alone in this!

I went through this exact same situation last year and it was absolutely nerve-wracking! The identity verification after parent info changes is unfortunately becoming the norm with the new FAFSA system. Based on what I'm seeing in your thread, it sounds like you're actually making good progress - the fact that your status shows "Review Complete - Pending Processing" means you're almost done! A few things that helped me get through this: 1. Screenshot EVERYTHING - your verification status, submission confirmations, etc. Schools really appreciate having documentation when you request deadline extensions 2. Don't just email your schools - call them too. I found that talking to someone directly got me faster responses about deadline flexibility 3. Keep checking that verification status section daily (not the processing status) - once it moves to "Complete" your SAI should update within 2-3 business days You're so close to the finish line! Most schools have been really accommodating this year because they know the FAFSA delays aren't the students' fault. Hang in there!

•This is such great advice, especially about screenshotting everything! I wish I had thought of that earlier in the process. I'm definitely going to call my schools directly tomorrow instead of just relying on email. It's so reassuring to hear from someone who went through this successfully last year. The whole experience has been incredibly stressful, but knowing that schools are being understanding and that I'm almost at the finish line gives me hope. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience - it really helps to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this verification nightmare!

I'm dealing with a similar verification situation right now and this thread has been incredibly helpful! I've been stuck in identity verification for about 10 days after updating my dad's tax information. Reading through everyone's experiences, I'm realizing I need to check that separate "verification status" section that Oliver mentioned - I've probably been looking at the wrong status this whole time! For anyone else going through this, I just want to add that my school's financial aid counselor told me they're seeing verification delays across the board this year, not just for students who made changes. She said they've already extended their priority deadline once and are prepared to do it again if needed. So definitely reach out to your schools ASAP - they're much more understanding about these delays than you might expect. The stress is real though! Scholarship deadlines are terrifying when you're stuck in verification limbo. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and tips - it really helps to know we're not alone in this process.
