FAFSA stuck on tax verification for both parent and student accounts - can't move forward?
I'm so confused about the FAFSA verification process right now. I submitted my application two weeks ago, but when I logged in today, there's a notification saying 'Tax Information Verification Required' for both my account and my mom's account. Does this mean we're completely stuck until both verifications are complete? I uploaded my 2023 tax return through the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, but my mom is having trouble with hers because she filed an amended return. The deadline for my college's priority financial aid is coming up in 10 days, and I'm worried we'll miss out on grants if we don't get this sorted. Has anyone dealt with this dual verification issue before?

yep, you're stuck until both accounts are verified. happened 2 me too. the system won't calculate your SAI until all tax info is confirmed. super annoying but thats how it works

•Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Did your verification take a long time? I'm seriously worried about missing this deadline.

You're not completely stuck, but you need to take immediate action. For amended returns, your mom needs to request a Tax Return Transcript AND a Record of Account Transcript from the IRS. You can't just use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool with amended returns. The Record of Account will show both the original return and the amendments. Call your college's financial aid office right away and explain the situation. Many schools will hold your place in the aid queue if you can prove you're actively working on verification. Document everything!

•Thank you for explaining this! I didn't know about needing both transcripts. Will call the financial aid office tomorrow morning.

•This is exactly right - I'm a financial aid counselor and we see this all the time with amended returns. Get those transcripts ASAP!

I had a similar issue last month with verification for both accounts. After trying to call FSA for three days and constantly getting disconnected, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual FAFSA agent in under 20 minutes. The agent manually marked my mom's tax verification as pending review so my application could continue processing while they sorted out her amended return. Seriously saved my deadline situation - you can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

•Is that service legit? I'm always skeptical of third-party services for FAFSA stuff. Did they need all your personal info?

•It just helps you skip the phone queue. You still talk directly to the official FAFSA agents - they just connect your call faster. Definitely worth it when you're up against a deadline.

Professional financial aid advisor here. Let me clarify a few things about tax verification: 1. For standard applications, both student and parent verifications must be complete before your SAI is calculated. 2. HOWEVER, there is an exception process for amended returns. Your mom needs to: - Call FSA directly at 1-800-433-3243 - Request a manual verification review - Provide her amended return (Form 1040-X) - Ask for a "processing exception code" to be added to her account 3. For your college deadline: Email your financial aid office with evidence that you've submitted your portion correctly and are actively working on the parent portion. Most institutions will grant an extension in these circumstances, especially for amended returns which are known to cause delays. Don't panic - this happens frequently, especially with the new system.

•Thank you so much for this detailed information! I didn't know about the exception process. Will my mom need to speak to them directly or can I call with her permission?

•Your mom will need to speak directly since it's her tax information. They'll need to verify her identity. She should have her SSN, FSA ID, and tax documents ready when calling.

WHY does the FAFSA system have to be so RIDICULOUS?? This happened to me too and I ended up losing a $5000 grant because of their stupid verification delays!!!! The system is DESIGNED to make people miss deadlines! They never tell you upfront that amended returns cause problems. I'm still bitter about it a year later.

•Sorry that happened to you! Unfortunately, it's true that amended returns trigger additional verification steps that many students don't know about until it's too late.

•Thanks. Just don't want anyone else to go through what I did. Fight for those extensions and don't give up!

Update: I called my financial aid office this morning and explained the situation. They're giving me a 14-day extension as long as I can provide proof that we've requested the tax transcripts and are working on verification. Mom is calling the IRS today to request both transcripts. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Great news! Make sure your mom requests both the Tax Return Transcript AND the Record of Account. The regular transcript alone won't show the amendments.

One more tip - when your mom calls the IRS for those transcripts, she might be on hold forever. My dad waited 2+ hours. If she uses Claimyr for that call too, it might save her a ton of time. Just trying to help since you mentioned the tight deadline!

•Thanks for the suggestion! She's working from home tomorrow so she can stay on hold while working, but I'll let her know about this option if she gets frustrated with the wait.

did ur mom file her amended return electronically or paper? paper ones take FOREVER to process in the system. my dad's took like 3 months to show up in the irs system last year

•She filed electronically through her accountant, so hopefully that helps? She amended it back in November so it should be fully processed by now.

Just want to add - sometimes the FSA system shows that verification is needed even when it really isn't! It's worth checking your actual SAI (Student Aid Index) number on your dashboard. If you have an SAI displayed, that means your application was actually processed despite the verification notice.

•Just checked and there's no SAI showing yet, just the verification notice. But thanks for the tip!

Everyone here is overthinking this. Just submit the FAFSA without the parent info and then add it later. That's what I did and it worked fine.

•This is incorrect advice. Submitting without required parent information will flag your application as incomplete, and many schools won't consider incomplete applications for priority deadlines. Please don't follow this suggestion as it could jeopardize your financial aid package.

•Oh really? That's what a friend told me worked for him. Sorry about that!
