Mom's account tangled with mine on FAFSA - can't get her to sign parent section

I'm freaking out about this FAFSA mess! My mom and I totally misunderstood how the accounts work. She thought we could use ONE account for both of us, so our information got all mixed up. Once I realized the problem, I fixed my part and created my own separate account. But now when my mom tries to create her contributor account, the system keeps saying she ALREADY has one! I can't finish my 2025-2026 FAFSA application because she can't sign her required parent section. Has anyone dealt with this account confusion before? We called the helpline twice but got disconnected both times after waiting 45+ minutes. My college's priority deadline is coming up fast and I'm seriously worried about missing out on financial aid!

same thing happened with my dad lol. the FAFSA website is sooo confusing this year

Did you figure out how to fix it? I'm literally losing sleep over this!

Your mom needs to recover her FSA ID account instead of creating a new one. This is a common issue with the FAFSA's new system. Here's what to do: 1. Go to studentaid.gov/fsa-id/sign-in 2. Click on "Forgot Username or Password" 3. Have your mom enter her email or phone number 4. Complete the identity verification steps Once she recovers her account, she'll be able to access her dashboard and see your FAFSA listed in her "Action Items" section where she can complete her portion. Make sure she uses HER email and phone, not yours, when recovering the account.

Thank you so much for this detailed help! We'll try this tonight. Do you know if she'll need her tax info again when she signs in? We have it ready just in case.

Yes, she'll need to have her 2023 tax return information available. The system might ask her to verify income details again if the accounts were mixed. Also make sure she has her Social Security card handy for verification. Good luck!

I had this EXACT problem last month!! It was such a nightmare. We ended up having to completely delete my FAFSA application and start over. BUT before you do that drastic step, try calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center directly. The regular phone numbers are useless - I kept getting disconnected too. My financial aid advisor told me about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual FAFSA agent in about 10 minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The FAFSA agent was able to untangle our accounts on their end. Apparently this is happening to tons of people with the new system.

is that claimyr thing legit? sounds kinda sketchy tbh

It's actually legit - my college financial aid office recommended it when I couldn't get through. They basically just hold your place in line and call you when they get an agent. Saved me from having to restart my whole application.

Thank you!!! I'm definitely going to try the account recovery first, but if that doesn't work I'll look into Claimyr. At this point I'd try anything to fix this mess.

THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME AND MY PARENTS!!!! The new FAFSA is a DISASTER compared to last year!!! I ended up having to get my school's financial aid office involved after trying for TWO WEEKS to fix it ourselves. They had some direct contact at the Department of Education who eventually fixed it, but it took forever and I almost missed my priority deadline.

Oh no that sounds horrible! Did you have to provide any special documentation to get it fixed? I'm wondering if I should start gathering stuff now just in case.

They made us send in signed statements from both me and my mom explaining exactly what happened with the account mix-up. Also had to provide proof of identity for both of us (copy of driver's licenses). I'd definitely start getting that stuff ready now.

This is a common issue with the new FAFSA system. I work in a college financial aid office, and we're seeing this almost daily. Here's what's happening behind the scenes: When your mom entered her information in your account, the system created a partial FSA ID for her linked to your email/phone. Now when she tries to create her own account, the system sees her SSN is already in use. There are three options to fix this: 1. Account recovery as mentioned above (works about 60% of the time) 2. Contact FSA directly to have them unlink the accounts (works almost always but takes time) 3. Start a fresh FAFSA application and ensure separate accounts from the beginning (last resort) For option #2, the Federal Student Aid Information Center (1-800-433-3243) can help, but wait times are currently 2-3 hours due to high volume. Calling early morning (right when they open) or using a callback service improves your chances. Don't panic about deadlines - many schools are being flexible this year due to the systemic FAFSA issues.

This explanation is SO helpful! Thank you for breaking down what actually happened. We'll try account recovery first, and if that doesn't work we'll call FSA directly. My school's priority deadline is April 1st - do you think we have enough time?

0 coins

Yes, you should have enough time if you act quickly. If you're still having issues by March 20th, I'd recommend contacting your school's financial aid office directly to alert them of your situation. Most schools are creating exceptions for students facing FAFSA technical issues this year, so documentation of your attempts to resolve it will be important.

anyone else think its ridiculous they completely overhauled the fafsa system and then provided basically zero support for all the problems? like how are average families supposed to figure this out??

fr the new system is trash. my counselor said theyre getting like 10x more questions about fafsa this year

It's seriously frustrating. My mom isn't tech-savvy at all, and trying to explain this to her over the phone is impossible. I wish they'd just gone back to the old system that worked fine!

Have you tried using different browsers? Sometimes the FAFSA site has weird glitches that resolve with a different browser. My application kept freezing in Chrome but worked fine in Firefox.

We haven't tried that! That's a good idea, I'll have her try Firefox instead of Safari. Thanks for the suggestion.

UPDATE: We finally got it fixed! The account recovery method worked after a couple tries. For anyone with this same problem - make sure you're using the EXACT email that was originally entered in the mixed-up account. We kept trying with my mom's main email but it turns out she had used her work email when entering info in my account. Thank you everyone for all your help! I can finally sleep tonight knowing we're back on track with the FAFSA.

Great news! Make sure both of you save your FSA ID credentials somewhere secure for next year. You'll use the same accounts for future FAFSAs, and this will prevent similar issues.

So glad you got it resolved without having to start over! Such a relief, right?
