FAFSA parent signature error - can't make corrections or add schools

I'm totally stuck with my FAFSA application and running out of time! I submitted my application 2 weeks ago, but just discovered it wasn't processed because apparently I forgot to have my mom sign the parent portion. When I try to go back in to fix this, the system won't let me complete the signature process at all - just keeps looping back to the same error page. On top of that, my sister is trying to add 3 more colleges to her FAFSA that she forgot initially, but the system won't let her make any changes either. Has anyone run into these issues? I've tried logging out completely, using different browsers, and even creating a new FSA ID for my mom thinking maybe that was corrupted somehow. Nothing works! Any suggestions before we miss our priority deadlines?

I had a similar issue with the parent signature last month. It's frustrating but fixable! For the signature problem, make sure your parent is using their OWN FSA ID to sign, not yours. Many parents accidentally try to use their child's login. Also, there's a specific sequence you need to follow: 1. Have your parent log in with THEIR FSA ID 2. Navigate to the "Parent Signature" section 3. Confirm their FSA ID was created more than 3 days ago (there's a waiting period) 4. Make sure the name on the FSA ID EXACTLY matches what's on their Social Security card For your sister's school additions, she needs to go to the "Make FAFSA Corrections" section, not the original application flow. The option is sometimes hidden under a dropdown menu.

Thanks for the tips! I just checked and my mom's FSA ID was created only yesterday when we were trying to fix this - could that be the 3-day waiting period issue you mentioned? And we've definitely been trying the "Make FAFSA Corrections" section for my sister but it keeps saying "Processing - No Corrections Allowed" even though it's been 2 weeks.

yea same thing happened 2 me last year!! the whole system is SO annoying!! we ended up having to call them and wait on hold FOREVER just to get it fixed. some schools have financial aid offices that can help u btw if ur already enrolled somewhere

Ugh, I was afraid we'd have to call. The one time I tried I was on hold for like 45 minutes and then got disconnected. How long did you have to wait?

I went through this exact nightmre with my son's FAFSA!!! The parent signature thing is a KNOWN GLITCH in their system but they refuse to fix it!!! I had to call SEVEN TIMES before getting someone who knew what they were doing. They have to manually override something on their end. Don't waste time with the website - it WILL NOT WORK no matter how many times you try!!!

Seven times?? That's insane! Did you just keep calling the main number or is there a specific department to ask for?

Just kept calling the main FSA number 1-800-433-3243 and getting disconnected or transferred to people who couldn't help!! It's RIDICULOUS how they run this system when our kids' futures depend on it!!

Financial aid advisor here. The issues you're experiencing are actually quite common this year with the new FAFSA rollout: 1. For the parent signature issue: There is indeed a 3-day validation period for new FSA IDs before they can be used for signatures. However, there's also a secondary issue - if your application is showing as "in process" status, the system won't allow new signatures until that processing completes OR times out (usually 7-10 business days). 2. For adding schools: During the processing period after submission, you cannot make corrections. After processing completes, the correction function should unlock. If it's been more than 10 business days, you'll need to contact Federal Student Aid directly. Don't panic about priority deadlines - most schools understand the FAFSA difficulties this year and have adjustment processes. Be sure to email the financial aid offices at your target schools to notify them of the technical difficulties.

This is really helpful information, thank you! So it sounds like we need to just wait a bit longer for the processing to complete? Is there any way to check the exact status rather than just seeing "Processing"?

Unfortunately, the new FAFSA system doesn't provide more detailed status information beyond "Processing." However, if it's been more than 10 business days since submission, I would definitely recommend contacting FSA directly as this indicates the application might be stuck in processing. Be sure to have your confirmation number and all FSA IDs ready when you call.

guys I had teh SAME PROBLEM and I found a solution!! use claimyr.com to get through to a real person at FAFSA without waiting forever!! they got me connected to an agent in like 10 mins when I was trying for DAYS before. the agent fixed the signature thing while I was on the phone. they have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ seriously saved me so much stress with my financial aid deadline coming up!

Does that actually work? Seems weird to use a third party just to make a phone call...

it totally works! not weird at all - they just help u skip the crazy hold times. my agent fixed everything in like 5 minutes once i got through. sooo much better than waiting on hold for hours or getting disconnected

The signature problem happened to me too!! What worked was having my dad create a totally new FSA ID using a different email address than before. Then waited exactly 3 days (has to be 72 hours minimum). Then we logged in and it worked finally. For adding schools, try this weird workaround that worked for me: 1. Wait until after midnight EST (system does updates then) 2. Use the mobile app instead of website 3. Go to "Update FAFSA form" not "Make correction" The whole system is buggy right now and they know it. My financial aid officer told me they're getting TONS of these cases.

Oh we haven't tried the mobile app! Great suggestion - will definitely try that for my sister's schools tonight. And I think we're at about 48 hours on my mom's new FSA ID so maybe just need to wait one more day. Thanks for the specific advice!

Quick update on school additions: There's a known issue with the "Processing" status that sometimes doesn't resolve automatically. If manual intervention is needed, only Federal Student Aid personnel can help. When you call (and you will unfortunately need to call), specifically request them to "release the application from processing status" - using this exact terminology helps get to the right department faster.

Thank you for the specific wording! I'll definitely use that exact phrase when I call. Hopefully that'll help get this resolved faster.

Just wanted to follow up - did any of these solutions work for you? I'm curious which route ended up fixing the problem since I might run into this again with my younger sister applying next year.

Update: We used that Claimyr service someone suggested to get through to an agent quickly (it actually worked!). The agent confirmed there was a system glitch with both our applications. For the signature problem, they manually reset the signature section so my mom could sign. For my sister's school additions, they had to completely unlock her application on their end. Apparently it was stuck in an "infinite processing loop" (their words). Everything's working now and we were able to add the schools and complete the signatures. Our SAI scores finally generated yesterday!

That's awesome that you got it resolved! Thanks for sharing the update - it's really helpful to know what actually worked. The "infinite processing loop" explanation makes so much sense for why nothing was working on the website. I'm definitely bookmarking that Claimyr service for future reference since it sounds like the new FAFSA system still has a lot of bugs. Glad you didn't miss your deadlines!
