FAFSA signature step not working - stuck on final submission step

I'm about to tear my hair out trying to submit my daughter's FAFSA for the 2025-2026 year! We spent THREE HOURS filling out all the information, triple-checked everything, got to the signature page and...nothing happens when we click 'sign & submit'! The button just flashes and returns to the same page. No error message, no explanation, NOTHING! We both created FSA IDs last week (mine as parent contributor), verified our emails, and logged in successfully. I've tried different browsers, cleared cookies, restarted my computer - still nothing. The application shows 'complete' on all sections but we just can't sign and submit. Has anyone else experienced this signature glitch? Any workarounds? The priority deadline is approaching and I'm getting desperate!

yep happened to us too last week! my son was tryin to submit and kept getting stuck. turns out he didnt verify his phone # on his FSA ID account. check both ur FSA ID accounts and make sure BOTH email AND cell are verified. fixed it for us instantly

Thank you! I'll check that right now. I remember verifying emails but not 100% sure about the phone numbers. Fingers crossed this solves it!

This is a common issue that can happen for several reasons: 1. Phone number verification - as mentioned above 2. Name mismatch - the names on your FSA ID accounts need to EXACTLY match what you entered in the FAFSA (including hyphens, spaces, etc.) 3. Social Security Number mismatch between FSA ID and what was entered on FAFSA 4. Browser compatibility issues - try Microsoft Edge specifically as it seems to work best 5. System maintenance - especially on weekend evenings I'd recommend checking your FSA ID accounts first for verification status, then compare names/SSNs exactly. If that doesn't work, try during weekday business hours.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! We did use Chrome, so I'll try Edge. And I just realized my daughter uses a nickname on everything but her FSA ID has her legal name - that might be causing the mismatch.

I had the EXACT same problem!!! So frustrating! Turns out my browser had an extension blocking javascript or something. Try turning off ALL extensions or use incognito mode. Also make sure you aren't using a VPN. The government website freaks out with those.

Good tip about the browser extensions! I remember now that my nephew had this problem and it was because of an ad blocker extension. The FAFSA site relies on certain scripts that these blockers might prevent from running properly.

I do use AdBlock Plus! Never thought about that being the issue. Will try turning it off right now.

If you've tried all these technical solutions and still can't get through, it might be worth contacting Federal Student Aid directly. Unfortunately, their phone lines are notoriously difficult to get through. I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helped me reach a live agent at FSA without the hours of hold time. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ showing how it works. The agent was able to resolve my signature issue by making an adjustment on their end. For something time-sensitive like this, it might be worth considering.

Has anyone actually tried this service? Do they actually get you through to ppl faster? Sounds too good to be true but the FSA phone line is IMPOSSIBLE lately.

Yes, I've used it twice now - once for this signature issue and again when I needed to update some income information that was locked. Both times it connected me within about 15 minutes instead of the 2+ hours I spent on hold before giving up. The FSA agents were actually very helpful once I could actually reach them.

WHY DOES THE FAFSA HAVE TO BE SO UNNECESSARILY COMPLICATED??!! This is my 3rd year doing this and EVERY SINGLE YEAR there's some stupid technical problem! One year the site was down for WEEKS after launch, then verification issues, now signature problems! It's almost like they WANT students to miss out on financial aid. Sorry for the rant but this process makes me CRAZY. The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

No need to apologize - I feel the EXACT same way! For something so important to millions of students, you'd think they'd have better systems in place.

UPDATE: IT WORKED!! Turns out it was a combination of issues. My daughter's name didn't match exactly (she had her middle initial on the FAFSA but full middle name on her FSA ID) AND I had an ad blocker running. Fixed both and it submitted! Thanks everyone for the help!

Glad to hear you got it resolved! For anyone else reading this in the future, I'd recommend following these steps before starting your FAFSA: 1. Create FSA IDs for student and parent(s) at least 3 days before starting application 2. Verify both email AND phone for each FSA ID 3. Use exactly the same name/SSN formatting on both FSA ID and FAFSA 4. Use Microsoft Edge with no extensions or Chrome in incognito mode 5. Complete the application during weekday business hours if possible Following these steps prevents most of the common submission problems.

This is really helpful. Just a quick question - if my parents are divorced, do both need an FSA ID or just the one I live with most?

For divorced parents, only the parent you lived with the most during the past 12 months needs an FSA ID. If equal time with both, then it's the parent who provided more financial support. The other parent's information isn't needed for the FAFSA (though some schools may request it separately for institutional aid via the CSS Profile).

As someone who just went through this nightmare with my own kid's FAFSA, I feel your pain! One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet - sometimes clearing your browser cache isn't enough. You might need to delete all stored FAFSA data and start the session fresh. Go to your browser settings and specifically delete cookies and site data for studentaid.gov. Then log back in and try the signature step again. Also, make sure you're not switching between browsers mid-application - the site sometimes gets confused about which session is active. The whole process is ridiculously buggy but once you figure out the right combination of settings it usually works. Hang in there!
