FAFSA identity verification after name change - stuck in verification limbo since January
I got married last December and changed my last name, and now I'm in FAFSA verification hell. I've been trying since JANUARY to get my identity verified for my 2025-2026 FAFSA application, but it's like screaming into the void. I've uploaded my marriage certificate, new driver's license, and social security card through the studentaid.gov portal THREE separate times. My application status just says "Identity Verification Required" with no updates. I've called the FSA helpline at least 15 times (not exaggerating), and either get disconnected after 45+ minutes or told "someone will email you within 3-5 business days" - which never happens! I've sent emails to the verification department too, but radio silence. Meanwhile my college's financial aid deadline is in 3 weeks, and I'm panicking about losing my Pell Grant eligibility. Has anyone successfully navigated identity verification after a name change? What actually worked? I'm desperate for any advice at this point!

I went through this last year after getting married - it's a NIGHTMARE. Have you tried specifically asking for a "manual review" when you call? That's the magic phrase that finally got me through. Also, try calling right when they open at 8am Eastern - the wait times are way shorter.

I work in a financial aid office and see this ALL THE TIME. The identity verification backlog this year is worse than ever. Here's what you need to do: 1. Contact your school's financial aid office IMMEDIATELY - they can often submit an urgent verification override request on your behalf 2. Get a letter from your Social Security office confirming your name change is complete in their system 3. Submit both your old and new identification documents together in ONE PDF file (old driver's license + new driver's license, old SS card + new SS card) - sometimes the verification team struggles to connect the documents 4. Ask specifically for a name change verification specialist when you call FSA Also - IMPORTANT: have your school put a note in your file that you're awaiting verification. Most schools have a process to extend your financial aid deadline in these situations, but you need to be proactive about it.

lol welcome to FAFSA hell... they're all incompetent. my cousin had same situation and ended up having to drive 3 HOURS to nearest FSA office and even then they made her come back a second time. system is completely broken especially this year with all the FAFSA simplification changes.

I'm dealing with almost the exact same situation, except it's because I have a hyphenated last name that doesn't match my SSN exactly. Been waiting since February 12th with no resolution. The most frustrating part is that this is my third year applying for FAFSA and I've never had this problem before! Why is it suddenly an issue for 2025-2026? Did your SAI calculation complete at least? Mine got stuck halfway through, so I don't even know if I'll qualify for aid this year. The whole simplification process has been a disaster.

One more important thing I forgot to mention - if your college's financial aid deadline is coming up in 3 weeks, you should request a "Professional Judgment Review" from your financial aid office. Explain that your FAFSA is stuck in identity verification and you're actively working to resolve it. Most schools will grant extensions for students in your situation, especially with the widespread issues this year. Be sure to get the extension IN WRITING and keep documentation of all your attempts to resolve the verification issue (screenshots of uploaded documents, call logs, emails, etc.). This will be important if you need to appeal later.

UPDATE: Using the advice from this thread, I was able to get through to FSA using Claimyr, asked specifically for a manual review with the identity verification department, and got my issue resolved within 48 hours! They confirmed they had all my documents but they were sitting in a queue waiting for manual verification. The agent flagged my account for expedited review since my school's deadline is approaching. To the OP - definitely try asking specifically for the "manual review" and mention your school's deadline is coming up soon. That seemed to be what got them to prioritize my case. Good luck!
