FAFSA SSA verification delay - should I be worried about address change?
I just submitted my first-ever FAFSA application yesterday and got a message saying my info needs to be verified by the Social Security Administration. It said this could take 1-3 business days, which is making me super anxious since my school's priority deadline is coming up! Everything seems correct - my name, SSN, and birthdate all match my social security card. But I'm worried because I moved from California to Nevada last month and wonder if that might cause issues with verification? My mailing address on the SSA records probably still shows my old address. Should I just wait the full 3 days for them to verify my identity, or should I be doing something else? Has anyone dealt with address mismatches during FAFSA verification?

I had this exact same thing happen last month!!! Dont worry the address has nothing to do with it. They only check your name DOB and social to match whats in their system. Mine took exactly 2 business days then I got an email saying I was verified.

•Omg thank you so much! That's such a relief. Did you get any kind of notification when it was verified or did you just have to keep checking the website?

The verification process through SSA is completely normal and happens to every FAFSA applicant. The 1-3 business day timeframe is standard, and in most cases, it's completed without any issues. Your address change shouldn't affect this process since they're primarily matching your SSN, name, and DOB with their records. However, if you're concerned about the address discrepancy for other aspects of your financial aid, you should update your address with Social Security Administration as soon as possible. This can be done online through their my Social Security portal or by visiting a local SSA office.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll definitely update my address with SSA. Do you know if that might affect my SAI calculation at all? Or is that completely separate from the address on file?

•Your address doesn't directly impact your Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation. The SAI is primarily based on your (and if applicable, your parents') income, assets, household size, and how many people in your household are in college. The address is just for communication purposes. Just make sure your FAFSA includes your current address so any correspondence reaches you promptly.

Just to add some clarity to this situation - the SSA verification step is actually one of the more reliable parts of the FAFSA process. While 1-3 business days is the standard timeframe, about 80% of verifications are completed within 48 hours. Your address change won't cause problems with this particular step. However, you should be aware that the 2025-2026 FAFSA has experienced significant processing delays overall, with many students waiting 4+ weeks for their final SAI calculation after completing the application. So even after your SSA verification completes, there may be additional waiting periods before your information is fully processed and sent to your selected schools. If you're approaching a priority deadline, I recommend reaching out directly to your school's financial aid office to notify them that you've submitted your FAFSA and are awaiting processing. Many institutions are being flexible with deadlines this year due to the widespread FAFSA delays.

•Oh wow, I didn't realize there could be additional 4+ week delays AFTER the SSA verification! That's seriously concerning with my school's May 1st priority deadline. I'll definitely contact my financial aid office tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up!

This verification thing is just another way they make the process complicated on purpose!! Last year I waited SIX days for verification when they said 1-3 business days. The whole system is designed to discourage people from getting aid. And when you try calling studentaid.gov for help? GOOD LUCK getting through!

•I understand your frustration with the verification delays. When I needed to speak with someone at Federal Student Aid last semester about my verification issues, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and actually got through to a live agent in about 10 minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ It helped me resolve my verification hold much faster than I expected. Might be worth considering if your verification doesn't clear in the next day or two and you need to speak with someone directly.

My daughter went through this last month. SSA verification took 2 days but then we had another problem where her contributor information wouldn't process right. Make sure your parents (if they're contributors) create their own FSA IDs and get verified too. That caused us an extra 2 weeks of delays.

•Thank you for mentioning this! I'm filing as an independent student (I'm 24), so I won't have parent contributors. Hopefully that makes my application a bit simpler!

•Oh that's good! Independent students definitely have an easier time with the process. Just be prepared for additional verification requests - about 30% of independent students get selected for verification where they ask for extra documentation proving your independent status.

random question but does anyone know if changing your address affects your pell grant eligibility? i heard different states give different amounts

Landon Flounder
•That's actually a common misconception. Pell Grant amounts are determined at the federal level and are the same across all states - they're based on your SAI score and cost of attendance, not your state of residence. What does vary by state are state-specific grants and scholarships. For example, Nevada has the Silver State Opportunity Grant for Nevada residents, while California has Cal Grants. So your move from California to Nevada might affect which state-specific aid programs you're eligible for, but not your federal Pell Grant amount.

Update: For anyone finding this thread in the future, the Federal Student Aid office recently published guidance stating that SSA verification wait times may occasionally extend to 5 business days during peak application periods (typically November-February and April-June). If verification takes longer than 5 business days, they recommend contacting the FSA Information Center for assistance. The current academic year (2025-2026) has seen higher than normal application volumes, which may affect processing times.

•Quick update on my situation - my verification came through this morning! So it took exactly 2 business days. Thanks everyone for the help and reassurance!

That's awesome news! Congrats on getting through the verification step so quickly. For other students reading this thread, Khalil's experience shows that the SSA verification really does work within the promised timeframe most of the time. The 2-day turnaround seems to be pretty typical based on what everyone's shared here. Now you can focus on waiting for the rest of your FAFSA processing - fingers crossed it goes smoothly from here!

•That's such great news @Khalil Urso! I'm actually going through the same verification process right now (submitted my FAFSA yesterday too) and was getting really anxious about it. Seeing your success story gives me hope that mine will go through smoothly as well. Did you get an email notification when it was verified, or did you have to keep checking your FAFSA dashboard? I'm a total newcomer to all this financial aid stuff and still figuring out how to track the progress!
