WorkSource virtual job fair - can I join by phone and leave early?
So I'm scheduled for a WorkSource virtual job fair thing and it's supposed to be part of my work search requirements. The invite says I can join by 'Meeting Link, Meeting Number, Mobile Device, Phone or Video System' and it runs from 1-4pm. Problem is I have a shift at my part-time job starting at 2:30 that day and can't reschedule. Has anyone done one of these virtual fairs before? I'm wondering if I can just call in on my phone, participate for the first hour or so, and then leave early? Will they mark me as not attending if I don't stay the full 3 hours? Really don't want to mess up my benefits over this!

I did one of these WorkSource virtual job fairs back in January. They don't take attendance for the entire time - it's more like a drop-in thing where you can visit different employer "booths" in the virtual space. When you first log in, they record your attendance for your job search activity, but after that it's pretty flexible. I was able to spend about an hour there and got credit for the activity.

•Oh that's a huge relief! So they mark you as attending right at the beginning? Do you know if the phone option works ok? I'm worried about missing something important if I can't see the screen.

these virtual fairs r actually pretty flexible, i called in to 1 last month cuz my internet was down. u just gotta make sure u do the initial check-in part so they record ur attendance for ESD. the phone option isnt great tbh, hard to hear sometimes and u cant see the employers slides but its better than nothing

•Thanks for the info! I'll probably still try the phone option since I don't have a choice. Do you remember if they said anything important in the first hour that I should know about?

I work at WorkSource (not ESD directly) and can tell you how these typically run. The first 15-30 minutes is usually an orientation and explanation of how the virtual platform works. Then they open up the employer booths and you can visit whichever ones interest you. For attendance purposes, you need to: 1. Check in at the beginning (first 15 min) 2. Visit at least 3 employer booths 3. Document this activity on your weekly job search log Phone participation is definitely available, but you'll miss the visual elements. I recommend joining by computer for the orientation part if possible, then switching to phone when you have to leave for work.

•This is really helpful! So as long as I check in and visit 3 booths in that first hour, I should be good? I might be able to use my laptop for the first 30 min then switch to phone as you suggested.

•Yes, that would be perfect. Just make sure to notify one of the hosts when you check in that you'll need to leave early for work. They can help make sure you get to the right employers quickly. And be sure to note on your job search log that you attended the virtual job fair but had to leave early for work - documentation is key with ESD.

THE WHOLE ESD SYSTEM IS RIDICULOUS!!! They schedule these things during WORKING HOURS when people with JOBS can't attend!!! How are we supposed to work AND jump through all their hoops??? I missed one of these stupid virtual things because of my job and they disqualified my benefits for two weeks!!

•While I understand your frustration, WorkSource does actually offer various workshops and job fairs at different times throughout the month specifically to accommodate different schedules. If you check their calendar, they usually have some evening options too. And if there's truly a conflict with all available times, you can request an exemption or alternative activity by contacting your claims specialist directly. Did you try calling ESD to explain your situation when you got disqualified?

I'm confused about something... if you're working part-time already, are you reporting those hours on your weekly claim? Because ESD can disqualify you if you're working but not reporting it correctly. Just making sure you're not accidentally setting yourself up for an overpayment situation later.

•Yes, I report all my hours every week! I'm only getting about 15-20 hours at this retail job which isn't enough to live on, so I still qualify for partial unemployment. I'm super careful about reporting everything correctly because I don't want to deal with overpayment issues.

•Smart move! Just wanted to check since I've seen so many people get tripped up by that. Good luck with the job fair!

when i did one of these last year they just care that you sign in tbh. but the whole thing was a waste of time anyway. all the employers just tell you to go apply on their website. might as well just apply directly and skip the fair completely lol

•While some employers do direct candidates to their websites, many use these events to pre-screen candidates and flag promising applications. Some even conduct on-the-spot preliminary interviews. The real benefit is making a personal connection with recruiters - it can help your application stand out from the digital pile. I've seen numerous cases where job seekers who attended our fairs got callbacks when their previous online applications went nowhere.

To directly answer your question: Yes, you can definitely join by phone, and yes, you can leave early. The phone option works through their Webex system - when you dial in, you'll need to enter the meeting number followed by the # sign. For your job search log, make sure to document: - The exact name of the job fair - The date and time you attended - Names of at least 3 employers you interacted with - Any positions you expressed interest in This detailed documentation is important in case ESD has questions about your job search activities later. Since these virtual job fairs count as multiple job search activities, it's worth making the effort to attend even if only for the first hour.

•Thank you for the detailed instructions! I'll make sure to write down all that information for my log. Really appreciate knowing exactly what I need to document.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely prioritize those booths during my limited time there.
