Won ESD appeal but status shows 'appeal in progress' - will future weeks be affected?

So I had this whole situation where I was disqualified for supposedly not meeting job search requirements (even though I totally did). I finally got my appeal hearing last Thursday and the judge actually ruled in my favor right on the spot! She said my previous disqualified weeks would be paid, and when I checked my eServices account today, those weeks indeed show 'paid' status now. But here's what's weird - when I look at the 'Decision Status' on my appeal, it STILL says 'Appeal in Progress'. This has me freaking out a bit. Does anyone know if this is normal? Will this affect my future weekly claims? I'm worried they might start disqualifying me again for the same reason even though I won the appeal. Should I call ESD to make sure everything is officially updated in their system?

This is totally normal! The online system takes a while to catch up after appeal decisions. If your weeks are showing as paid, that's what really matters. The appeal status might not update for another 1-2 weeks while they process all the paperwork. As long as the judge ruled in your favor verbally and your payments are processing, you're good to go. Just make sure you continue to do your job search activities and document everything carefully for future weeks.

Thank you! That's a huge relief. I was getting so stressed thinking they might reverse it again or something. I'll definitely keep documenting everything super carefully.

Thanks! Yeah it was stressful but worth it. Just glad to finally get those payments.

OMG the EXACT same thing happened to me in February!!! I won my appeal over being disqualified for a job separation issue, but the system showed 'appeal in progress' for like 3 WEEKS after I got paid!! I freaked out and called like 50 times but could never get through. Everything worked out fine though - they never messed with my future weeks. The ESD system is just ridiculously slow at updating status things.

That's really good to hear! Did you have to do anything special with your weekly claims while waiting for the status to update?

The ESD systems are completely disconnected from each other. Trust me, the left hand never knows what the right is doing there. My advice? Take screenshots of EVERYTHING. The paid status, the appeal status, everything. I've been burned too many times by their 'system updates' that somehow erase previous decisions. I wouldn't trust anything until that appeal status officially changes.

That's a good point about taking screenshots. I'll definitely do that just to be safe. Their system does seem super disorganized.

They can't legally reverse a formal appeal decision without going through another appeals process. Your friend probably had something else happen - maybe he didn't meet eligibility requirements for a different reason after winning on the first issue. That happens sometimes.

I would recommend calling ESD just to confirm everything is finalized in their system. However, getting through to them can be challenging. When I needed to confirm my appeal status last month, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an ESD agent within 15 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 - definitely worth it for the peace of mind.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that if the status doesn't update in the next week. I've tried calling before and it's basically impossible to get through.

For everyone's information, here's how the ESD appeal process actually works behind the scenes: 1. The judge makes a verbal decision at your hearing 2. They write up the official decision (takes 1-2 days) 3. The decision gets sent to ESD for processing (1-3 days) 4. ESD updates payment status for affected weeks (1-2 days) 5. FINALLY they update the appeal status in the system (up to 2 weeks) So the fact that your payments are already showing 'paid' means you're at step 4, which is great! The system showing 'appeal in progress' just means they haven't done the final administrative update yet. As long as you continue meeting your weekly requirements going forward, you shouldn't have any issues with future claims.

This is super helpful, thank you! The ESD website doesn't explain any of this timeline stuff. Do you work for them or something?

No, I don't work for ESD - I just went through three appeals last year (won them all eventually) and had to learn how their systems work the hard way. I spent a lot of time talking to different departments trying to figure out why things weren't updating correctly.

MAKE SURE you keep doing your job search activities even while waiting for everything to update!!! I know someone who thought winning their appeal meant they didn't have to do job search for a while (no idea why they thought that) and they got disqualified all over again for a completely different reason. Don't give ESD any excuse!

Oh definitely! I'm being extra careful with my job search activities now - documenting everything with screenshots, saving all emails from employers, the works. Not taking any chances after what I just went through.

I went through something similar last year! The system lag is frustrating but totally normal. One thing I'd add to the great advice already given - if you haven't already, I'd recommend requesting a copy of the written appeal decision for your records. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to arrive by mail, but having that official document can be really helpful if any questions come up later about your eligibility. You can usually request it by calling the appeals office directly (they're easier to reach than the main ESD line). Congrats on winning your appeal!
