EDD appeal status changed from APPEAL to PAID - did I win my overpayment case?
Hey everyone, I'm in a weird limbo with my EDD appeal right now. I had my hearing about 8 days ago (was super nervous but it went okay I think). The judge said they'd mail the decision within 10 business days. Here's the thing - I just logged into my UI Online account and noticed the 2 weeks that had previously been labeled as "APPEAL" (these were weeks they claimed I had an overpayment of $4,200) now show as "PAID" status. They've been in appeal status for months! Does this status change from APPEAL to PAID likely mean my appeal was successful? I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much, but this seems like a good sign, right? Has anyone had this happen before receiving their official appeal decision? I'm checking my mailbox obsessively but nothing yet.

This is actually a really good sign! When I appealed my overpayment last year (mine was around $3,800), the same thing happened. About a week after my hearing, my weeks switched from APPEAL to PAID, and then 3 days later I got the official decision in the mail saying I won. They don't usually update the system until they've made their decision, so I'd say you're probably in good shape. Congrats!

•OMG thank you for sharing your experience! That's such a relief to hear. I've been so stressed about having to pay back all that money. Fingers crossed I get the official letter soon!

•Oh no, really? That's concerning. Did your friend get any explanation for why the status changed if she ended up losing? I guess I'll try to stay cautiously optimistic.

I work as an employment attorney and have handled many EDD appeals. While nothing is guaranteed until you have the written decision in hand, a status change from APPEAL to PAID is typically a strong indicator that your appeal was successful. The administrative law judges usually enter their decisions into the system before the official notices are mailed out. The fact that this happened within the timeframe the judge mentioned (within 10 business days) also suggests this is a deliberate status change rather than a system glitch. However, I would still recommend waiting for the official decision before making any financial plans based on this outcome. If you do win your appeal, make sure to keep all documentation related to the case in a safe place. EDD has been known to occasionally revisit these decisions during subsequent audits.

•Thank you so much for this detailed information! It's really helpful to hear from someone with professional experience. I'll definitely keep all the documentation no matter what happens. Do you know if there's any chance EDD could appeal the judge's decision if I win?

•Yes, EDD does have the right to appeal an ALJ's decision to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (CUIAB) within 30 days of the decision being issued. However, in my experience, they typically only do this for cases involving significant amounts of money or when they believe there was a clear misapplication of the law. For a case involving $4,200, while not insignificant, it's less likely they would pursue this further unless there are unusual circumstances. If you win, just be sure to keep all your documentation for at least two years, as that's generally how far back they'll look during audits or reviews.

Congrats!!! That's definitely a good sign! When I had my appeal hearing last year they told me the same thing about waiting for the letter, but I could tell from the judge's questions that it was going my way. The PAID status is pretty much unofficial confirmation. Start celebrating! 🎉

•Thanks for the encouragement! The judge did seem pretty receptive to my documentation, but I didn't want to read too much into it. Hoping for the best!

I wouldn't trust any status changes until you get the official decision letter. My cousin went through something similar with his disability claim (not unemployment but still EDD) where the online status looked promising but then the actual decision was different. The EDD systems often don't sync up properly with the appeals department. Have you tried calling to confirm your appeal status? That might give you a definitive answer faster than waiting for the mail.

•I've tried calling a few times but can't get through - either busy signals or being on hold forever and then disconnected. It's so frustrating trying to get actual information from EDD!

•If you're having trouble getting through to EDD on the phone, you might want to try Claimyr. It helped me get through to an agent when I was dealing with my appeal last month. Their system basically navigates the EDD phone system for you and calls you back when they have an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km An agent should be able to tell you if there's a decision entered in their system even if you haven't received the letter yet.

I HATE the waiting game with EDD! I had to wait almost 3 weeks after my hearing before getting my letter even though the judge told me 7-10 days. The mail system is so slow these days. But yeah, PAID is a good sign - mine also changed from DISQUALIFIED to PAID right before I got my favorable decision. Sending good vibes your way!

•3 weeks?? Ughhh I hope mine doesn't take that long. The stress is killing me! But it's reassuring to hear about another case where the status changed before the good news arrived. Thanks for the good vibes!

My appeal was for disqualification not overpayment so maybe its different but mine said DISQUALIFICATION for months then changed to PAID two days before I got my letter saying I won. I think its a very good sign but EDD is unpredictable sometimes so don't count on it 100% but be hopeful!!!

•This is correct. The system updates for both disqualification and overpayment appeals function similarly. In both cases, a status change to PAID before receiving the official decision typically indicates a favorable outcome. The technical difference is that disqualification appeals are about eligibility for benefits while overpayment appeals concern whether already-received benefits must be returned, but the appeal process and system updates follow the same general pattern.

Update: I GOT THE LETTER TODAY! The appeal was approved!!! The judge ruled that I had provided sufficient evidence that I reported my income correctly and the overpayment was due to an EDD processing error! I'm so relieved I could cry. Thanks everyone for your input and support during this stressful time. For anyone going through appeals - document EVERYTHING and bring all your evidence to the hearing!

Congratulations! This is such wonderful news and really gives hope to those of us who might face similar situations in the future. It's great that you kept us updated with the outcome. Your experience with the status changing from APPEAL to PAID before getting the official letter is really valuable information for this community. I'm sure many people will find your story helpful if they're going through their own appeals process. Enjoy that relief - you definitely earned it after all that stress!
