Will Washington ESD find out if I worked while collecting unemployment?
I've been collecting unemployment for about 6 weeks now and last week I picked up a small cash job helping my neighbor move some furniture. It was only like $80 but I'm wondering if Washington ESD will somehow find out about this? I know I'm supposed to report all work but honestly I need every dollar I can get right now and this was just a one-time thing. Should I report it on my weekly claim or will they never know? I'm scared if I report it they'll reduce my benefits but I'm also worried about getting in trouble if they find out some other way.

You absolutely need to report all work, even cash jobs. Washington ESD has ways of finding out and if they catch you not reporting work it's considered fraud. They can make you pay back all benefits plus penalties.

•But how would they even know about a cash job? There's no record of it anywhere.

•They cross-reference with other databases, do random audits, and people report each other more than you'd think. Not worth the risk.

dude just report it, washington esd isn't trying to screw you over for $80. they'll probably just reduce your payment by like $50 or something but you'll still get most of your benefits

•Really? I thought any work would disqualify me completely for that week.

•No, Washington ESD has an earnings deduction formula. If you earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you can still get partial benefits. So if your weekly benefit is $400 and you earned $80, you'd still get around $315 that week.

I was in a similar situation last year and couldn't get through to Washington ESD to ask about reporting requirements. Spent hours on hold trying to reach someone. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an ESD agent in like 10 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Was totally worth it to get my questions answered directly by ESD staff.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already broke, can't afford to pay for something like that.

•I get being tight on money but think about it this way - if you get caught not reporting work you could owe back thousands in overpayments plus penalties. Worth checking out their site to see if it makes sense for your situation.

The Washington ESD fraud department is no joke. They have investigators who specifically look for unreported work. I know someone who got caught 6 months after not reporting a weekend job and had to pay back everything plus a 50% penalty.

•Oh god that's terrifying. How did they find out?

•Someone reported them anonymously. Plus ESD does wage crossmatches with employers even for cash jobs sometimes. They take this stuff seriously.

this whole system is so confusing!! i worked 4 hours last week but forgot to report it and now im panicking. should i call and tell them or just report it on this weeks claim?

•You can report it on this week's claim as long as it's within the same benefit week period. Check your claim dates to make sure you're reporting it for the right week.

Let me break down exactly how this works since there's confusion here. When you file your weekly claim, you report gross earnings for any work performed during that benefit week. Washington ESD then applies their deduction formula - they subtract 75% of your gross earnings from your weekly benefit amount. So if you earned $80 and your weekly benefit is $400, they subtract $60 from your benefit, leaving you with $340 for that week.

•Wait I thought it was dollar for dollar reduction. So I can actually work part time and still get some benefits?

•Exactly! That's the whole point of partial unemployment benefits. You're encouraged to take part-time work while looking for full-time employment.

I've been on unemployment 3 times over the years and ALWAYS report everything, even a $20 cash job. It's just not worth the stress of wondering if they'll find out. Plus being honest with ESD has never caused me problems.

•That makes me feel better. I think I'm just going to report it and deal with whatever happens to my benefits.

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO CATCH YOU!! They want you to mess up so they don't have to pay benefits. I swear they have algorithms looking for people who don't report work properly.

•While ESD does have fraud detection systems, they're not trying to trick people. The reporting requirements are clearly stated and they provide resources to help you understand them.

•Maybe but try calling them when you have questions - you'll be on hold for hours if you can get through at all

Just went through this exact situation. Had a one day moving job for $100 and was scared to report it. Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned to talk to an actual ESD agent. She explained that not only should I report it but that I'd still get most of my benefits that week. Ended up getting $320 instead of my usual $380, so I was worried over nothing.

•That's exactly what I needed to hear! Going to report my $80 job when I file this week.

•How long did it take to get connected through Claimyr? I've been trying to reach ESD for weeks about a different issue.

•Like 15 minutes total. Way better than the 3+ hours I usually spend trying to get through their regular phone line.

my friend works at washington esd and she says they randomly audit claims all the time. they look at bank deposits, cross reference with tax records, even check social media sometimes. not trying to scare you but they have more ways to find unreported work than most people realize

•Social media?? How would they even connect your social media to unreported work?

•if you post about getting paid for something or thank someone for hiring you, stuff like that. i know it sounds paranoid but my friend has seen cases where that happened

Look I get being scared about reporting work but here's the reality - Washington ESD wants you to work! The whole point of unemployment is to help you transition back to full employment. They're not going to punish you for picking up small jobs here and there.

•This is true. I've been working part-time while on unemployment for 2 months now and ESD has been totally supportive. They even have job search resources to help you find more work.

i made the mistake of not reporting cash work early in my claim and when i finally called to ask about it the agent told me i needed to report it immediately and they'd adjust my past claims. it was scary but they didn't penalize me since i self-reported. honesty really is the best policy here

The bottom line is this: report ALL work, even cash jobs. Washington ESD has multiple ways to verify your earnings and the penalties for fraud are severe. But don't panic - most people who report work still receive partial benefits and stay in good standing with the system.

•Thanks everyone for all the advice. I'm definitely going to report the work when I file my weekly claim this week. Better to be honest and get reduced benefits than risk fraud charges.
