Will Washington ESD know if I work another job while on unemployment?

I've been collecting unemployment for about 6 weeks now and just got offered some part-time work at a different company than where I was laid off from. I'm worried about messing up my claim - will Washington ESD automatically know if I start working this other job? I want to do everything legally but I'm confused about what I need to report and when. The job would only be maybe 15-20 hours a week so I'd still need unemployment to cover my bills.

Yes, you absolutely need to report ANY work income when you file your weekly claims. Washington ESD gets wage information from employers through quarterly reports, so they will find out eventually. If you don't report it upfront, they'll consider it fraud and you could owe back all the benefits plus penalties.

Thanks for the heads up! So I report it on my weekly claim form right? Do I report the hours worked or just the gross pay amount?

0 coins

Both - you need to report the hours worked AND the gross earnings for that week. Washington ESD will then calculate how it affects your weekly benefit amount.

i made this mistake last year and got caught, they made me pay back like $2800 in overpayments. definitely report everything even if its just a few hours

0 coins

Wow that's scary! How did they find out? Was it immediate or did it take a while?

0 coins

took about 6 months before i got the overpayment notice. they cross-reference your social security number with employer wage reports

This is actually a common situation. Washington ESD allows you to work part-time while collecting benefits, but there are specific rules. You can earn up to 1/3 of your weekly benefit amount without any reduction. Anything above that gets deducted dollar-for-dollar from your benefits. The key is ALWAYS reporting it on your weekly claim.

0 coins

That's helpful! My weekly benefit is $540, so I could earn up to $180 without it affecting my benefits at all?

0 coins

Exactly right. Washington ESD calls this the 'earnings deduction' - you get to keep some work income as an incentive to take part-time work while job searching.

0 coins

wait this doesnt sound right, i thought ANY work reduced your benefits

0 coins

No, that's a common misconception. Washington ESD specifically allows partial earnings without penalty to encourage people to take available work.

I was in your exact situation last month and was having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about reporting requirements. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made it so much easier to get my questions answered directly.

0 coins

That sounds useful! I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days but keep getting disconnected.

0 coins

how much does something like claimyr cost? seems like it might be worth it if it actually works

0 coins

The service was definitely worth it for me - saved me hours of trying to get through. Check out their site for details, but it was much less stressful than the endless phone tree.

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO CATCH YOU!! They want you to mess up so they can deny your claim and not pay out benefits. I swear Washington ESD makes the rules confusing on purpose. Always CYA and report everything or they'll nail you later.

0 coins

That's what I'm worried about! I definitely don't want to get in trouble, I just need help understanding what exactly to do.

0 coins

honestly the system isnt that confusing if you just read the instructions carefully. they explain the reporting requirements pretty clearly

0 coins

Easy for you to say! When you're stressed about bills and job hunting, everything feels overwhelming. The penalties are scary.

0 coins

Here's the step-by-step for reporting work: When you file your weekly claim, there's a section asking about work and earnings for that week. You enter the employer name, hours worked, and gross earnings BEFORE taxes. Washington ESD's system automatically calculates any benefit reduction. Don't try to calculate it yourself.

0 coins

Perfect, thank you! So I do this every week I work, even if it's just a few hours?

0 coins

Correct. Every single week you work any hours at all, report it on that week's claim. Better to over-report than under-report.

0 coins

same boat here, been doing gig work while on unemployment and always report every penny. washington esd has been pretty good about the partial benefits thing

0 coins

That's reassuring! Are you still required to do the job search activities even when working part-time?

0 coins

yep still gotta do the job search stuff and keep your log. working part time doesnt excuse you from that requirement

0 coins

One more important point - make sure your part-time work doesn't interfere with your availability for full-time work. Washington ESD requires you to be able and available for full-time employment. If the part-time job has restrictions that would prevent you from taking a full-time position, that could affect your eligibility.

0 coins

The part-time job is pretty flexible, mostly evenings and weekends. I should still be available for interviews and full-time work during regular business hours.

0 coins

That sounds fine then. Just make sure you can honestly answer 'yes' to the availability questions on your weekly claims.

0 coins

what if the part time job wants you to work during the day sometimes? does that disqualify you?

0 coins

It depends on how often and whether you can still accept full-time job offers. Occasional day shifts probably won't be an issue, but regular daytime availability requirements might be problematic.

I've been using claimyr too when I need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. Way better than sitting on hold for hours. Last time I used it was to clarify exactly this reporting question and the agent walked me through the whole process.

0 coins

Did they give you any tips beyond just reporting the income? I want to make sure I don't miss anything.

0 coins

The agent mentioned keeping your own records of what you report, in case there are any discrepancies later. Screenshot your weekly claim submissions or print them out.

0 coins

also make sure you understand the difference between when you WORK vs when you get PAID. you report earnings for the week you actually worked, not the week you get the paycheck

0 coins

Oh wow, I wouldn't have thought of that distinction. So if I work Monday-Friday but don't get paid until the following Tuesday, I report it for the week I actually worked?

0 coins

exactly right. its based on when the work was performed, not when payment is received

0 coins

This whole thread is making me nervous about my own situation. I did some cash work for a neighbor a few weeks ago and didn't report it because I didn't think they'd find out...

0 coins

You should report that on your next weekly claim and explain it was work from a previous week. Washington ESD allows corrections, and it's better to self-report than get caught later.

0 coins

Will they penalize me for reporting it late? I'm scared to bring attention to it now.

0 coins

They're usually more lenient if you voluntarily correct the error rather than waiting for them to find it. Call them or use one of those services like Claimyr to ask about the best way to handle it.

0 coins

question about job search logs - if im working part time do i still need to apply to 3 jobs per week or does the part time work count toward my work search activities?

0 coins

Part-time work doesn't count toward your job search requirement. You still need to complete the required number of job search activities each week, which is typically 3 for most claimants.

0 coins

ugh that seems like a lot when youre already working some hours. guess i better keep applying to jobs then

0 coins

yeah the job search thing is annoying but they do check those logs sometimes during audits

0 coins

Just want to say thanks to everyone for all this info! I was in the same boat as OP and this thread answered all my questions. Going to start my part-time job next week and feel confident about reporting it correctly now.

0 coins

Same here! This has been super helpful. I feel much better about taking the job now that I understand the reporting requirements.

0 coins

one last tip - take screenshots of your weekly claim confirmations that show you reported the work income. if theres ever a question later you have proof you did everything right

0 coins

Great idea! I'll definitely do that. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

0 coins

i learned this the hard way during an overpayment dispute. thankfully i had kept records and was able to prove i reported everything correctly

0 coins

For anyone still reading this thread - I had a similar question last month and ended up using Claimyr to speak with a Washington ESD representative. The agent confirmed everything people are saying here about reporting requirements and the partial earnings deduction. Really worth the peace of mind to get official confirmation directly from the source.

0 coins

That's exactly what I was thinking - getting it straight from Washington ESD would make me feel a lot more confident about doing this right.

0 coins

same, sometimes you just need to hear it from an actual washington esd person to feel comfortable proceeding
