Why was my unemployment week denied by Washington ESD - need help understanding
Filed my weekly claim like I always do but this week got denied and I have no idea why. My account doesn't show any specific reason, just says 'not payable' for last week. I've been collecting for 2 months without any issues and nothing changed in my situation. Still looking for work, still available, didn't work any hours. Anyone know what could cause a random denial like this? Really stressing because I need this payment to cover rent.

Check your correspondence inbox on your Washington ESD account - they usually send a letter explaining the denial reason. Could be something simple like you didn't certify properly or missed answering one of the weekly questions correctly.

•I checked and there's nothing in my inbox. The denial just showed up without any explanation which is weird.

•Sometimes the letters take a day or two to show up in the system. Keep checking back every few hours.

This happened to me last month! Turned out I accidentally clicked 'yes' to the question about being offered work when I meant to click 'no'. One wrong answer can deny your whole week.

•Oh man, that's probably it. I was rushing through the questions because I was late for an interview. Can I fix it somehow?

•You'll need to call Washington ESD to get it corrected. But good luck getting through - I tried for days.

Getting through to Washington ESD by phone is nearly impossible with their call volume. I recently discovered Claimyr which helped me reach an actual agent in under 30 minutes. They have a service that handles the calling for you - check out claimyr.com and their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Might be worth it to get this denial reversed quickly.

•Never heard of that service but I'm desperate at this point. Does it actually work?

•Worked for me when I had an adjudication issue. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

•Sounds too good to be true honestly. How much does something like that cost?

Before paying for anything, double-check that you answered all the weekly certification questions correctly. The most common ones that trip people up are: Did you look for work? Were you able and available? Did you refuse any job offers? If you messed up any of these, that's probably why you got denied.

•I think I might have clicked the wrong thing on the job refusal question. I had a phone interview that didn't go well but I didn't refuse the job - they just didn't offer it to me.

•Yeah that's definitely not a job refusal then. You need to get that corrected ASAP because it affects your eligibility.

ugh washington esd is the worst... my claim got denied for weeks before i figured out what was wrong. their system is so confusing

Mateo Martinez
•What ended up being wrong with yours? Maybe it's the same issue.

•i kept saying yes to available for work but no to able to work or something backwards like that. took forever to fix

The weekly claim questions are super picky about wording. 'Able and available' means you're physically capable of working AND available to accept work immediately. If you had any restrictions or weren't available for full-time work that week, you should have answered differently.

•I was available all week though. The only thing I can think of is I misclicked something while rushing.

•This is why I always double-check my answers before submitting. One mistake can cost you a whole week of benefits.

Could also be a job search requirement issue. Did you do your required job contacts that week? Washington ESD randomly audits these and if you didn't meet the minimum they'll deny your claim.

Mateo Martinez
•I definitely did my job searches. I keep a detailed log because I'm paranoid about this stuff.

Zoe Alexopoulos
•Good - keep that log because you might need to provide it if they ask for documentation.

Same thing happened to my neighbor. She accidentally reported income from a gig job wrong and it flagged her claim. Check if you reported any earnings correctly, even small amounts.

Mateo Martinez
•I didn't work at all that week so no income to report. This is so frustrating.

•Then it's definitely one of the certification questions. You really need to call them to get it straightened out.

Since regular calling isn't working, seriously consider using Claimyr. I used them when I had a similar random denial and the agent was able to see exactly what caused it and fix it on the spot. Much better than weeks of uncertainty.

•I'm leaning towards trying it. This denial is going to mess up my whole month if I can't get it reversed.

•I used them too when I couldn't reach Washington ESD directly. Worth every penny to actually talk to someone who can help.

Washington ESD's phone system is absolutely broken. I've been trying to reach them for three weeks about my own issue. The fact that we have to pay third parties just to contact our own state agency is ridiculous.

Mateo Martinez
•I know it's crazy but at this point I just need my benefits restored. Can't afford to wait weeks for them to maybe call me back.

Liam O'Donnell
•Totally understand. The whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up on their claims.

Another possibility - if you filed your weekly claim late, even by a few hours past the deadline, it can cause automatic denial. Washington ESD is strict about their Sunday night cutoff time.

Mateo Martinez
•I filed it Saturday afternoon like I always do, so timing wasn't the issue.

QuantumQueen
•Then it's almost certainly a question you answered incorrectly. The phone call is your best bet to get it resolved quickly.

This exact thing happened to me and it turned out I had accidentally said I wasn't looking for work when I clicked through too fast. took 3 weeks to get it fixed because I couldn't reach anybody

Mateo Martinez
•Three weeks?? I can't wait that long. Did you eventually get the back payment?
0 coins
Amara Nwosu
•yeah they paid me retroactively but it was a nightmare. definitely try that calling service people are mentioning

Just a heads up - when you do get through to Washington ESD, have your claim confirmation number ready and be prepared to explain exactly what you think went wrong. The agents can see your answers but they move fast so be clear about what needs to be corrected.

Mateo Martinez
•Good advice, thanks. I'll write down what I think I messed up before I call.

•Also have your driver's license handy for verification - they always ask for that info first.

Washington ESD needs to fix their system. One tiny mistake shouldn't shut down your whole claim without even explaining why. It's like they want people to fail.

Mateo Martinez
•Right? At least give us a clear explanation of what we did wrong so we can avoid it next time.

•The whole system is designed to save them money by making it hard to collect benefits. Super frustrating.

Update us when you get it resolved! I'm curious what the actual reason was because this happens way too often.

•Will do. Planning to try calling first thing Monday morning, or maybe use that Claimyr service if I can't get through.

•Good luck! Really hope you get your payment restored quickly.

One more vote for Claimyr if traditional calling doesn't work. Their success rate for connecting to Washington ESD agents is way higher than trying on your own. The peace of mind alone is worth it when you're stressed about missing payments.

Keep us posted OP! These random denials are happening to more and more people and we need to document what's causing them.

Mateo Martinez
•Definitely will update once I figure out what went wrong. Hopefully it's something simple to fix.

•Fingers crossed for you! The uncertainty is the worst part of dealing with Washington ESD.

Don't panic yet - most of these denials are fixable once you talk to someone. The hard part is just getting through to an actual person who can help.

•You will! Just be persistent and don't give up. Your benefits are important and you deserve to get them.

Classic Washington ESD move - deny first, explain never. Hope you get through to someone who can actually help instead of just reading you the same info that's already on the website.
0 coins
Mateo Martinez
•Yeah I've already read everything online multiple times. I need someone who can actually look at my specific claim and tell me what happened.
0 coins
Ava Johnson
•Exactly. The website is useless for specific issues like this. You need a real person to dig into your account.
