When does unemployment start in Washington - confused about benefit begin date
I'm totally confused about when my unemployment benefits actually start. I filed my initial claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday but I'm not sure if benefits start from when I filed or from when I actually lost my job (which was 2 weeks before I filed). My friend said there's a waiting week but I can't find clear info on the Washington ESD website. Does anyone know exactly when unemployment starts and if I missed out on money by not filing immediately?

Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file your initial claim, not when you lost your job. So if you filed last Tuesday, your benefit year started the Sunday before that Tuesday. There is a waiting week for the first payable week, which means you won't get paid for that first week even if you're eligible.

•So I basically lost 2 weeks of benefits by waiting to file? That's frustrating.

•Unfortunately yes, you can't get benefits for weeks before you file your claim. That's why it's important to file as soon as possible after becoming unemployed.

yeah the waiting week thing is confusing. i filed in january and had to wait like 3 weeks just to get my first payment because of adjudication stuff too

•Did you eventually get paid for that waiting week or is it just gone forever?

•nope waiting week is just gone, they dont pay you for it even after everything gets approved

I had a similar situation last year where I couldn't get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my claim timing. Ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually talk to an agent who explained the whole benefit start date thing clearly. They have this video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Really helped me understand the process better than trying to navigate the website.

•Is that one of those services that charges you to call? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•It's not free but honestly worth it when you can't get through any other way. The peace of mind of actually talking to someone who knows the rules was huge for me.

•I looked at Claimyr too but ended up getting through on my own after calling 200+ times. Sometimes persistence pays off.

The Washington ESD system is designed to make you lose money honestly. They don't make it clear that you need to file immediately and then they have all these random waiting periods and adjudication delays that cost people rent money.

•Totally agree! My claim sat in adjudication for 6 weeks and I almost got evicted waiting for benefits to start.

•While the system has issues, the waiting week and filing requirements are actually clearly stated in the unemployment handbook. The problem is most people don't read it until after they need benefits.

Wait so if I file on a Wednesday does my benefit year start that Wednesday or the Sunday before? This is so confusing.

Nia Jackson
•It starts the Sunday before the day you file. So if you file on Wednesday, your benefit year started the previous Sunday.

•That makes no sense but ok thanks I guess

So just to be clear - I filed last Tuesday, my benefit year started the Sunday before last Tuesday, but I won't get paid for that first week because of the waiting week rule?

•Exactly right. And you'll only get paid for weeks where you file your weekly claim and meet all the eligibility requirements.

•Don't forget you also have to do the job search activities. I think it's 3 job contacts per week now.

I made the same mistake and waited 3 weeks to file thinking I might find a job quickly. Lost out on like $2000 in benefits. File immediately people!

•Ugh that's exactly what I was afraid of. Why don't they make this more obvious?

QuantumQuasar
•Because then more people would actually get the benefits they're entitled to lol

The whole Washington ESD system is a nightmare to navigate. I've been trying to get someone on the phone for 2 weeks about my claim status and keep getting the busy signal or hung up on.

•Have you tried using that Claimyr service? My sister used it when she couldn't get through and actually talked to an agent the same day. Might be worth checking out their demo video to see if it would help your situation.

•I'll look into it, thanks. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get some answers.

This thread is really helpful. I just got laid off yesterday and was planning to wait until next week to file but sounds like I should do it today.

Nia Jackson
•Yes definitely file today! Even if you think you might find work quickly, you can always stop claiming if you get a job.

•Just filed my claim. The process was actually easier than I expected, just took about 30 minutes online.

Does anyone know if the waiting week applies to standby benefits too? I'm on temporary layoff and not sure if the rules are different.

•Standby has the same waiting week requirement. The only difference is you don't have to do job search activities since you're expected to return to your employer.

•I was on standby last summer and still had to serve the waiting week. Same rules apply unfortunately.

The waiting week is such BS. Like we're not struggling enough already when we lose our jobs, let's make them wait an extra week for money they earned through payroll taxes.

•Some states got rid of the waiting week during COVID but Washington kept it. Really shows their priorities.

•Exactly! It's just another way to deny benefits to people who need them most.

I think there's some confusion here about when benefits actually get paid vs when they start. Your benefit year starts when you file but you might not see money for weeks depending on adjudication and processing times.

Luca Romano
•Yeah that's what I'm worried about. How long does it usually take to actually receive the first payment?

Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•If everything goes smoothly, about 2-3 weeks after filing. But if they need to verify anything about your employment or eligibility, it can take much longer.

Pro tip: make sure you have all your employer information ready when you file. I had to go back and update my claim because I didn't have exact dates and it delayed everything by weeks.

Luca Romano
•What kind of employer information do they need exactly?

Dylan Mitchell
•Last date worked, reason for separation, employer's full name and address, and how much you were making. Have your last pay stub ready too.

Just want to add that if you're filing late like the OP, make sure you still file even if you think you missed out on benefits. Sometimes there are exceptions or backdating options depending on your situation.

Luca Romano
•Is there a way to backdate a claim to when you actually lost your job?

Sofia Morales
•It's very rare and only for specific circumstances like illness or lack of internet access. Most of the time you're stuck with the date you filed.

This whole thread convinced me to stop procrastinating and file my claim. Lost my job 10 days ago and kept thinking I'd find something quickly. Better late than never I guess.

•Good call! Even 10 days makes a difference in when your benefits start.

•Yeah wish I had found this thread sooner but at least I'm filing now.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely horrible. I tried calling about my benefit start date and waited on hold for 4 hours before getting disconnected. Ended up using one of those callback services and finally got through to confirm when my benefits actually started.

•Used Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here. Expensive but saved me days of calling. Their video demo explains exactly how it works.

One thing to remember is that even though your benefit year starts when you file, you still have to file weekly claims to actually get paid. Don't make the mistake of thinking filing once is enough.
0 coins
Luca Romano
•How often do you have to file these weekly claims?
0 coins
Miguel Silva
•Every week, usually on Sundays. You can file online or by phone. Miss a week and you don't get paid for that week.

Thanks everyone for the info. This cleared up a lot of confusion about when unemployment actually starts. Wish Washington ESD made this stuff clearer on their website.

•The information is there but it's buried in tons of other text. They really need to simplify how they present the basics.

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone else in this situation - I filed my claim about 3 weeks after losing my job because I thought I needed to wait until I was "sure" I wouldn't find work immediately. Big mistake! Not only did I lose those 3 weeks of potential benefits, but then I had to serve the waiting week on top of that. So essentially lost a full month of support when I needed it most. The lesson here is definitely file immediately even if you think you might get hired somewhere quickly - you can always stop claiming benefits if you find work, but you can't go back and claim those missed weeks.
