When do you collect unemployment benefits in Washington - timing questions
I'm trying to figure out the timing for when you actually start collecting unemployment benefits in Washington. I lost my job last Friday and I'm not sure if I should file right away or wait. Do benefits start immediately after you file your claim or is there a waiting period? Also confused about when the weekly payments actually hit your account. Any advice on the best timing for filing with Washington ESD would be really helpful.

You should file your claim as soon as possible after losing your job. Washington ESD has a one-week waiting period before benefits start, but you need to file weekly claims during that time. Benefits are typically paid on the Tuesday or Wednesday after you file your weekly claim, assuming there are no issues with your claim.

•Thanks! So I should file this week even though I won't get paid for the first week?

Mohammad Khaled
•Exactly - you need to establish your claim date. The sooner you file, the sooner your benefit year starts.

Wait I thought there was no waiting week anymore? I filed last month and got paid for my first week.

•Washington eliminated the waiting week during COVID but it came back. You might have qualified for a special situation or there could have been an error.

•Hmm that's weird, I definitely got paid for week 1. Maybe I should check my payment history.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD to check on my claim timing. Their phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. Took me weeks to get answers about when my benefits would start. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How does that work exactly? I'm worried I'll need to talk to someone if my claim gets stuck.

•Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Never heard of that before but sounds useful. The wait times are ridiculous.

The timing depends on your situation. If you were laid off you can file immediately. If you quit or were fired you might have to wait for adjudication which can take weeks. Regular unemployment benefits are paid after the waiting week, but standby benefits work differently if you're temporarily laid off.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so I think I should be okay to file right away.

•Yeah layoffs are usually straightforward. Just make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file.

OMG the timing is so confusing!!! I filed three weeks ago and still haven't gotten a single payment. My claim says 'adjudication in progress' but I have no idea what that means or how long it takes. I'm running out of money and getting really panicked about this whole process.

•Adjudication means they're reviewing something about your claim. It could be related to your separation from work or eligibility. You should get a determination letter explaining what they're reviewing.

•I haven't gotten any letters yet. Should I be worried? How long does adjudication usually take?

•Adjudication can take 4-6 weeks depending on the issue. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

been there done that with the waiting. filed in january and first payment came like 3 weeks later. make sure you do the job search stuff right away too or theyll hold up your payments

•What job search requirements? I thought I had time to figure that out.

•nope you gotta start job searching right away and log it. think its 3 job contacts per week now

The payment timing is usually pretty consistent once your claim is approved. I get mine every Wednesday morning around 6 AM. But the initial processing can take forever if there are any complications with your work history or reason for separation.

•Good to know about the Wednesday timing. Do you get direct deposit or a debit card?

Kevin Bell
•I do direct deposit - it's faster than the debit card option. You can set that up when you file your claim.

Just wanted to add that if you're on standby status the timing works differently. I work seasonal construction and get put on standby every winter. With standby you don't have the waiting week and payments can start right away if your employer files the right paperwork.

Fiona Sand
•That doesn't apply to me but good to know. My layoff was permanent unfortunately.

•Yeah standby is nice when it works but a lot of employers don't file the paperwork correctly.

I remember when I first filed I was so confused about the timing. Called Washington ESD probably 50 times trying to get answers. Finally got through to someone who explained that you need to file your initial claim first, then wait for your monetary determination letter, then start filing weekly claims. The whole process took about 2 weeks before I saw my first payment.

Fiona Sand
•Did you have to wait for the monetary determination before filing weekly claims? I'm getting conflicting info.

Felicity Bud
•No you should start filing weekly claims right away, even before you get the monetary determination. Don't wait.

The Washington ESD website has a timeline that shows when benefits start but it's not always accurate. I've seen people get paid earlier than expected and others wait months. It really depends on your individual situation and whether there are any red flags in your claim.

•What kind of red flags cause delays?

•Things like gaps in employment, being fired for misconduct, or having multiple employers in the base period. Anything that makes them question your eligibility.

Honestly the whole system is a mess. I filed in December and didn't get my first payment until February because of some computer glitch. Spent hours on hold trying to get it fixed. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected to an agent who fixed it in 10 minutes. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

•Two months is crazy! I hope my claim doesn't get stuck like that.

•That's exactly why I signed up for Claimyr too. The peace of mind is worth it when you're dealing with Washington ESD.

Quick question - if I file on a Monday do I get paid sooner than if I file on a Friday? Or does it not matter what day of the week you submit your weekly claim?
0 coins
Mohammad Khaled
•It doesn't matter what day you file as long as it's within the filing window. All weekly claims for a given week are processed at the same time and payments go out on Tuesday/Wednesday.

•Thanks! I was overthinking it.

For anyone reading this - make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information ready before you start filing. The system times out if you take too long and then you have to start over. Learned that the hard way.

•Good tip! I'll gather all that stuff before I start the application.

•Also have your bank account info ready if you want direct deposit. The routing and account numbers.

One more thing about timing - if you file late in the week (Thursday or Friday) your claim might not get processed until the following week. I always file my weekly claims on Sunday or Monday just to be safe.
0 coins
Fiona Sand
•So there's no advantage to filing really early in the week?
0 coins
Lindsey Fry
•Not really, but I like to get it done early so I don't forget. The key is just filing within the window for each week.

The worst part about the timing is when you're in between jobs and trying to budget. Not knowing exactly when that first payment will hit makes it really hard to plan. I ended up having to borrow money from family while waiting for my claim to process.

•That's my biggest worry right now. I have some savings but not much.

•Check if you qualify for any emergency assistance programs while you're waiting. Some counties have programs that can help bridge the gap.

Just to clarify for the original poster - you should file your claim as soon as possible after losing your job, start filing weekly claims immediately even during the waiting week, and expect your first payment about 2-3 weeks after filing if everything goes smoothly. The key is not to wait because you can't backdate your claim very far.

•Perfect summary, thank you! I'm going to file tonight.

•Good luck! The process is intimidating at first but once you get into the routine it's pretty straightforward.

I know this thread is getting long but wanted to mention that Washington ESD sends text updates about your claim status if you sign up for notifications. Helps you know when payments are coming and if there are any issues that need attention.

Fiona Sand
•How do you sign up for the text notifications?

Jasmine Hancock
•It's in your online account settings. You can choose to get texts about payments, claim status changes, and other important updates.

One last thing - keep track of all your dates. When you filed, when you got your determination letter, when you filed each weekly claim. If something goes wrong you'll need those dates to sort it out. I keep a simple calendar with all my unemployment stuff marked on it.

Fiona Sand
•That's smart. I'll start a spreadsheet to track everything.

•Yeah documentation is key with Washington ESD. They ask for dates and details about everything.

Hope this helps the OP and anyone else trying to figure out the timing. The main thing is to file quickly and be patient with the process. It's frustrating but the benefits do eventually come through for most people.
