When can you draw unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I'm trying to figure out the exact timing for when someone can actually start collecting unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. My employment ended last Friday and I'm wondering if there's a waiting period or if I can file right away? Also confused about when the payments actually start coming - is it immediate after approval or do you have to wait additional weeks? Any help understanding the timeline would be appreciated.

You can file your initial claim with Washington ESD immediately after your last day of work. There's no waiting period to file the application itself. However, there is a one-week waiting period before you can receive your first benefit payment, assuming your claim gets approved.

•So I can file now but won't get paid for the first week even if approved?

•Exactly. The first week is unpaid - it's called the waiting week. Your benefits start with the second week if you're eligible.

make sure you file ur weekly claims every week even during the waiting period or you'll lose those weeks

•Good point, I didn't realize you had to keep filing during the waiting week too.

The key thing to understand is there are actually multiple timelines involved. First, you file your initial claim which establishes your benefit year. Then Washington ESD has to process and approve your claim - this can take 1-3 weeks depending on whether any issues come up during adjudication. Only after approval do your weekly benefit payments begin, and even then the first week is unpaid as mentioned above.

•What if your claim gets stuck in adjudication for weeks though? I've been waiting almost a month and still nothing.

•Unfortunately adjudication delays are common. You should keep filing your weekly claims during this time so you don't lose any weeks once it's resolved.

•This is exactly what happened to me. Took forever to get through to Washington ESD to check on my adjudication status. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST! They make you jump through so many hoops just to get benefits you already paid into. The whole system is designed to deny claims and make people give up.

•I understand the frustration but it's important to follow the process correctly to avoid delays.

•Easy to say when you're not the one struggling to pay rent while waiting for benefits that should be automatic!

So just to clarify - I file the initial claim now, file weekly claims starting this week, there's a one week waiting period, and then payments start assuming no adjudication issues?

•That's correct. File your initial claim ASAP, then file weekly claims every week without fail. First week is unpaid, second week is your first payment if approved.

•And make sure you're actively looking for work and documenting your job search activities. Washington requires 3 job search contacts per week.

also dont forget you need to register with WorkSource wa or they'll stop ur benefits

Mateo Rodriguez
•Oh I hadn't heard about that requirement. When do I need to register?

•You have 4 weeks from when you file your initial claim to register with WorkSource Washington, unless you're exempt.

Been through this process twice. First time went smooth, second time got stuck in adjudication hell for 6 weeks. The difference was my employer contested the second claim.

•What happens if your employer contests it? Does that automatically delay everything?

•Yeah it triggers an adjudication review where they investigate the separation reason. Can take weeks or months depending on how backed up they are.

•This is why I used Claimyr when my employer contested. Needed to talk to someone at Washington ESD to understand what documentation they needed from me.

For anyone reading this, here are the basic eligibility requirements: you must have earned sufficient wages during your base period, be unemployed through no fault of your own, be able and available for work, and actively seeking employment. Meeting these doesn't guarantee immediate approval though.

•What's the base period exactly?
0 coins
Emily Jackson
•The base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. They use this to calculate your benefit amount.

I remember being so confused about when I could actually expect money. Filed on a Tuesday, got approved the following week, but didn't see any payment for almost 3 weeks total because of the waiting period.

•That's helpful to know. I need to budget accordingly then.

Quick question - if I quit my job can I still draw unemployment or is it only for people who get fired/laid off?

NeonNova
•Generally you're not eligible if you quit voluntarily, unless you had good cause like unsafe working conditions, harassment, or significant changes to your job duties.

•They'll make you prove good cause too. Have all your documentation ready if you quit.

I've helped several family members through this process. The biggest mistake people make is not filing weekly claims consistently or missing the WorkSource registration deadline.

•Thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure to stay on top of both requirements.

Just went through this last month. Filed Sunday night, claim was processed by Thursday, started receiving benefits the following week. Whole process took about 10 days which seemed pretty quick compared to horror stories I'd heard.

•You got lucky! Mine took 3 weeks just for initial processing.

•Same here, super quick approval. I think it depends on your specific situation and how clear-cut the separation was.

The timing also depends on when you file during the week. I've heard filing on Sunday nights gets processed faster than filing later in the week, but not sure if that's actually true.

•The day you file doesn't affect processing speed. What matters more is having all your information correct and complete when you submit.

One thing to remember - if you work part-time while collecting benefits, you still need to report that income. It might reduce your weekly benefit but you can still receive partial payments.

•Good to know. I might pick up some freelance work while job hunting.

•Just make sure to report every penny you earn or you could face overpayment issues later.

For what it's worth, I found the Washington ESD website pretty user-friendly compared to other state systems I've dealt with. The hardest part is getting through on the phone if you need to talk to someone.

•Yeah the phone situation is brutal. I tried calling for two weeks straight before giving up and just waiting for my claim to process naturally.

•That's exactly why I ended up trying Claimyr. Got tired of the busy signals and being hung up on. Worth checking out if you really need to speak with someone at Washington ESD.

My advice is to screenshot everything and keep records of all your weekly claim filings. If there are ever any disputes or issues, having that documentation is crucial.

•That's smart. I'll start doing that from day one.

The whole process seems overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes pretty automatic. Just don't miss any weeks!

James Martinez
•What happens if you do miss a week by accident?
0 coins
NeonNova
•You can sometimes file for missed weeks but there are strict deadlines. It's much easier to just file on time every week.

Bottom line - file your initial claim immediately, file weekly claims religiously, register with WorkSource within 4 weeks, document your job search, and be patient with the process. Most claims do get approved eventually.
