When can you start collecting unemployment benefits in Washington - timing questions

I'm trying to figure out exactly when I can start collecting unemployment benefits after losing my job. I was laid off last Friday and I'm not sure if I should file immediately or wait. Do I need to wait a certain period before I can start collecting? And when do the benefits actually start - is it from when I file or from when I lost my job? I'm confused about the timing and don't want to mess anything up with Washington ESD.

You should file your initial claim as soon as possible after losing your job, even if you're not sure about eligibility. Washington ESD recommends filing within the first week after job loss. Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file, not necessarily when you lost your job.

Thanks! So if I file this week, benefits would start from this past Sunday? Even though I was laid off Friday?

•

Exactly. The benefit week runs Sunday through Saturday, so if you file now, your claim starts from the Sunday of this week.

There's a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits though. So even if you file right away, you won't get paid for the first week you're eligible. That's just how Washington unemployment works.

Wait, so I have to wait an entire week without any payment? That seems harsh when I just lost my job.

0 coins

Yeah it sucks but that's standard. The waiting period is basically unpaid, but you still need to file your weekly claim for that week to establish your claim.

The key thing is to file ASAP. You can't backdate your claim very far, so waiting too long could cost you benefits. I learned this the hard way when I waited two weeks thinking I needed to job search first. Lost out on a week of benefits because of it.

How far back can they backdate claims? I'm in a similar situation and might have waited too long already.

Washington ESD generally only allows backdating up to one week, and only in certain circumstances. Don't wait any longer - file today if you can.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I needed to check on my claim timing. Their phone lines are always busy. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really saved me time instead of calling for hours.

That sounds helpful! I've been trying to call but keep getting busy signals. How does that service work exactly?

They basically handle the calling for you and connect you when an agent becomes available. Way better than sitting on hold forever or getting disconnected.

dont wait!! file asap. i waited like 10 days thinking i needed all my paperwork first and it was a mistake. you can always add information later but you cant go back in time to file earlier

What paperwork do I actually need to file? I have my termination letter but not much else yet.

You need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months. The termination letter helps but isn't required to file initially.

Also keep in mind you have to be able and available for work to collect benefits. So if you're planning to take a vacation or have surgery scheduled, that could affect when you can start collecting. Washington ESD is pretty strict about the able and available requirement.

Good point. I don't have any travel planned so I should be good there. Just want to make sure I file at the right time.

Yeah, and you have to be actively job searching too. Can't just file and sit around waiting for benefits without looking for work.

The online filing system is pretty straightforward once you get started. Just make sure you have all your employer information ready - names, addresses, dates of employment, reason for separation, etc. It's easier to have it all prepared before you start the application.

Is there a specific time of day that's better to file online? I've heard some government websites are slower during certain hours.

0 coins

I filed mine early morning and it went smoothly. Evenings and weekends might be busier with more people trying to access the system.

One thing to watch out for - if you received any severance pay, that could affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD considers severance as wages, so it might delay your eligibility depending on the amount and how it's structured.

I got two weeks severance. Will that completely prevent me from getting unemployment?

0 coins

Miguel Ortiz

•

Not necessarily prevent, but it might delay when you can start receiving benefits. You'll need to report the severance when you file and they'll determine how it affects your claim.

I'm dealing with the same situation right now. Filed my claim three days after being laid off and I'm still waiting to hear back about approval. The waiting is stressful when you've got bills to pay.

How long have you been waiting? I'm worried about how long the approval process takes.

It's been about a week since I filed. From what I've read, it can take 2-3 weeks for initial approval if there are no issues with your claim.

The Washington ESD website has a benefits calculator that can give you an estimate of your weekly benefit amount. Might be worth checking that out before you file so you know what to expect. Your benefits are based on wages from the last 18 months.

That's a good idea. I'll look for that calculator on their website. Do you remember where it's located?

It should be on the main Washington ESD website under the unemployment benefits section. Pretty easy to find once you're on their site.

Whatever you do, don't wait thinking you need to find another job first. I made that mistake years ago and missed out on weeks of benefits. File immediately and then focus on job searching while you wait for approval.

This is so true. I see people make this mistake all the time - thinking unemployment is only for people who can't find work at all.

CosmicCadet

•

Yeah, I was kind of thinking that way too. Good to know I should file right away regardless.

If you run into issues with the online system or need to speak to someone urgently, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does help. I used it last month when my claim got stuck in adjudication and I needed answers fast. Much better than trying to get through on the phone yourself.

Good to know there's a backup option if I can't get through normally. Hopefully I won't need it but nice to have as a plan B.

I was skeptical about using a service like that at first, but when you're desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD, it's worth it.

Make sure you keep detailed records of everything - when you filed, confirmation numbers, any correspondence from Washington ESD. Having good documentation can save you headaches later if any issues come up with your claim.

Good advice. I'll start a folder to keep track of everything related to my unemployment claim.

Smart move. I wish I had been more organized when I first filed. Would have saved me stress later when I needed to reference something.

The system can be confusing at first but it gets easier once you understand the process. Just remember - file early, be honest about everything, and keep up with your weekly claims even during the waiting period.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm going to file my claim today instead of waiting any longer.

Good decision! Feel free to come back here if you run into any issues during the process. Lots of helpful people in this community.

One last thing - make sure you're prepared for the job search requirements. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a detailed log. Start tracking your job search activities from day one.

CosmicCadet

•

Is there a specific format for the job search log, or can I just keep my own records?

Oliver Wagner

•

You can use their online system or keep your own detailed records. Just make sure you have dates, employer names, contact methods, and job titles for each search activity.
