When do you qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I was laid off from my retail job last month after working there for about 8 months. Before that I had another job for like 6 months but quit because my manager was being really inappropriate. I'm not sure if quitting that previous job will hurt my chances or if the 8 months at my recent job is enough to qualify. Does anyone know what the requirements are for Washington ESD unemployment? I don't want to waste time applying if I'm not eligible.

You need to meet Washington ESD's base year earnings requirements and have a qualifying separation. Since you were laid off from your most recent job, that's a qualifying separation. For the earnings requirement, they look at your wages during your base year which is typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim.

Thanks! So they don't care that I quit the job before my recent one? That's a relief.

0 coins

They might still ask about it during adjudication but if your most recent separation was a layoff you should be fine

The basic requirements for Washington unemployment are: 1) You must have earned at least $1,000 in your base year, 2) Your total base year wages must be at least 1.5 times your highest quarter wages, 3) You must be unemployed through no fault of your own, 4) You must be able and available for work, and 5) You must actively search for work.

This is super helpful! I definitely earned more than $1000 in my base year so I think I meet those requirements.

don't forget you also need to register with WorkSource WA

I was in a similar situation last year - laid off after working for about 10 months. The application process was pretty straightforward but getting through to Washington ESD on the phone was impossible. I kept calling and calling but could never get through to ask questions about my claim status.

0 coins

OMG yes the phone situation is ridiculous! I tried calling for weeks when my claim was stuck in adjudication

I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual Washington ESD agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration.

0 coins

Never heard of that but might be worth trying if I run into issues again

0 coins

The whole system is a mess honestly. I qualified based on my earnings but then they took forever to process my claim. Took like 6 weeks before I saw my first payment.

0 coins

6 weeks?? That's crazy long. Did they tell you why it took so long?

0 coins

something about verifying my identity and then adjudication for my job separation even though I was clearly laid off

0 coins

Just to clarify - when you quit your previous job due to inappropriate behavior from your manager, that could potentially be considered good cause if you can document it. Washington ESD recognizes quitting for good cause as a qualifying separation in some cases.

0 coins

I didn't know that! I don't have much documentation though, mostly just texts from coworkers complaining about the same manager.

0 coins

Those texts could actually be helpful if you need to provide evidence during adjudication

0 coins

yeah keep any documentation you have, never know when Washington ESD might ask for it

0 coins

You should definitely apply since you were laid off. The worst they can do is deny you and then you can appeal if needed. The online application on the Washington ESD website is pretty easy to fill out.

0 coins

Good point, I'll start the application tonight. Better to try than wonder if I qualified.

0 coins

make sure you have all your employment info ready when you apply - dates of employment, employer names and addresses, reason for separation, etc. they ask for a lot of details

0 coins

Thanks for the heads up! I'll gather all that info first before starting the application.

0 coins

Also have your Social Security number and driver's license ready - you'll need those for identity verification

One thing to know is that even if you qualify and get approved, you still have to file weekly claims and do job searches every week to keep getting benefits. It's not just a set it and forget it thing.

0 coins

How many job searches do you have to do each week?

0 coins

I think it's 3 per week but double check the current requirements on their website

0 coins

It's currently 3 job search activities per week for most claimants in Washington

0 coins

I qualified last year but my claim got flagged for some reason and I couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD for weeks. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected to an agent same day. Worth every penny when you're stressed about your claim.

0 coins

Good to know there are options if I run into problems reaching them!

0 coins

How much does that service cost?

0 coins

They don't post prices on their site but it was reasonable considering how much time and stress it saved me

0 coins

Don't let the phone issues scare you away from applying. Most claims go through without needing to call anyone. It's just the problem cases that end up needing phone support.

0 coins

That's reassuring! Hopefully mine will be straightforward since I was clearly laid off.

0 coins

Quick question - do you know if your employer is going to contest your unemployment claim? Sometimes they do that even for layoffs if they're trying to save money on their unemployment insurance rates.

0 coins

I don't think so? They laid off several people due to budget cuts so it wasn't performance related.

0 coins

That's good, sounds like a clear case of lack of work which is definitely qualifying

0 coins

Just apply already lol. You clearly meet the requirements and were laid off. Stop overthinking it and get your claim started so you can start receiving benefits.

0 coins

You're right, I'm definitely overthinking this. Going to apply tonight!

Pro tip: when you file your weekly claims, make sure you report any income accurately. Even small amounts like odd jobs or freelance work need to be reported or you could end up with an overpayment issue later.

0 coins

Good to know! I might do some gig work while job searching so I'll make sure to report it.

0 coins

Yes, always report all income. Washington ESD will find out eventually through wage records and it's better to be upfront

The waiting week thing caught me off guard when I first applied. You don't get paid for your first week of unemployment in Washington state - it's like a waiting period.

0 coins

Wait really? So even if I qualify I don't get paid for the first week?

0 coins

Yep, first week is unpaid but you still have to file that weekly claim

0 coins

That's correct - Washington has a one week waiting period for new unemployment claims

0 coins

Make sure your bank account info is accurate when you apply. Direct deposit is way faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail.

0 coins

Thanks! I'll double check my routing and account numbers before submitting.

i had to call washington esd when my claim was taking forever and that claimyr thing actually worked. got through in like 10 minutes instead of calling all day. they explained why my claim was held up and helped me fix it

0 coins

10 minutes?? I've been trying to call for days with no luck

0 coins

yeah it connects you directly to an agent without having to wait in the regular phone queue

0 coins

You mentioned working in retail - depending on what kind of retail it was, there might be seasonal considerations that affect your base year earnings. But with 14+ months of work history you should definitely qualify.

0 coins

It was regular retail, not seasonal. But good point about having enough work history to qualify!

0 coins

Just a heads up that if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, it can take several weeks to resolve. Don't panic if that happens - it's pretty common and doesn't mean you won't get approved.

0 coins

What causes a claim to go into adjudication?

0 coins

Could be anything - verifying your identity, checking job separation details, reviewing wage records. Lots of random reasons

0 coins

Adjudication is just Washington ESD's way of investigating any questions about your claim eligibility

0 coins

Based on what you described you should definitely qualify. Being laid off is the clearest qualifying separation and 14 months of work history should meet the wage requirements. Good luck with your application!

Thank you so much everyone! Really appreciate all the helpful info. Feeling much more confident about applying now.
