When do I get my waiting week paid on Washington ESD unemployment?
I've been on unemployment for about 6 weeks now and I'm still confused about this whole waiting week thing. Washington ESD made me serve a waiting week when I first filed but I thought they were supposed to pay it back at some point? My friend said she got hers paid after like 3 months but I haven't seen anything yet. Does anyone know the actual rules for when they release the waiting week payment? I've been filing my weekly claims on time and haven't had any issues with job search requirements.

The waiting week gets paid after you exhaust your regular UI claim or when your benefit year ends, whichever comes first. So if you're approved for 26 weeks of benefits, you'll get the waiting week paid on week 27. If your benefit year ends before you use all 26 weeks, they'll pay it then.

•Oh that makes sense! I thought it was based on time not on using up all your benefits. Thanks for clarifying.

•wait so if I only collect for like 10 weeks and then get a job, I don't get my waiting week back until my benefit year expires?

•Exactly right. It's not automatic - you have to either exhaust all your weekly benefit amount or wait until your benefit year ends.

I've been trying to get a straight answer about this from Washington ESD for weeks. Every time I call I either get disconnected or they put me on hold forever. The website doesn't explain it clearly either.

•I had the same problem getting through to them. What worked for me was using Claimyr - it's a service that helps you actually reach an ESD agent. Check out claimyr.com, they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before but I'm desperate at this point. The regular phone system is useless.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true tbh

There's actually specific language in the RCW about waiting week payment. It's paid as a lump sum either when you exhaust benefits OR at the end of your benefit year if you haven't used all your weekly benefits. The key thing is you have to be otherwise eligible - so if you get disqualified for any reason, you lose the waiting week too.

•What do you mean by disqualified? Like if I quit my job or got fired?

Chad Winthrope
•Any disqualification that affects your eligibility can impact the waiting week payment. Job separation issues, failure to meet work search requirements, refusing suitable work, etc.

So just to be clear - I can't request the waiting week payment early? I have to wait until one of those two scenarios happens?

Grace Thomas
•Correct, there's no way to get it paid early. It's automatic when you meet the criteria but not before.

•yeah I learned this the hard way too, kept asking about it and they told me the same thing

This whole waiting week thing is such BS. Like why make people wait when they're already struggling? Other states don't even have waiting weeks anymore.

•I agree it's frustrating but at least Washington eventually pays it back unlike some other states that just eat the week entirely.

•I guess that's something but still annoying when you need the money NOW

•The waiting week serves as a buffer period to ensure claims are legitimate. It's an administrative tool, not just arbitrary punishment.

I got mine paid last month when my benefit year ended. Showed up as a separate payment labeled as 'waiting week payment' on my account. Took about a week after my benefit year ended to appear.

•Good to know it actually happens! Did you have to do anything special or was it automatic?

Jason Brewer
•Totally automatic. I didn't even realize my benefit year was ending until I got the payment notification.

Wait I'm confused. I thought the waiting week was just the first week you don't get paid and that's it. You're saying we actually get that money back eventually?

Grace Thomas
•Yes! A lot of people don't realize this. The waiting week gets paid back as long as you remain eligible. It's not lost money, just delayed.

•Wow I had no idea. I've been on unemployment twice and never knew this. Wish someone had told me!

Update: I tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and actually got through to an ESD agent in like 10 minutes. She confirmed everything about the waiting week payment and was able to check my account status too. Way better than trying to call the regular number.

Does anyone know if this applies to standby claims too? I'm on standby through my union and wondering if the same rules apply.

Chad Winthrope
•Standby claims follow the same waiting week rules as regular UI claims. The payment timing is identical.

•Thanks! My union rep wasn't sure about this detail.

I think there might be exceptions for certain types of separations? Like if you were laid off due to lack of work vs other reasons?
0 coins
Chad Winthrope
•The separation reason doesn't affect when the waiting week gets paid, but it could affect whether you're eligible for it at all. As long as you're eligible for regular benefits, the waiting week payment follows the same schedule.

Savannah Vin
•Ah okay that makes sense. I was thinking of eligibility vs payment timing.

Just want to add that if you have any overpayments on your account, they might offset your waiting week payment against those. Found this out the hard way when mine was less than expected.

Justin Chang
•Oh wow I hadn't thought about that. Good thing to keep in mind.

•Yes, any outstanding overpayments or debts to ESD can reduce your waiting week payment just like regular benefits.

For anyone still confused about this, the key points are: 1) You get it back eventually 2) Either when you use all 26 weeks OR your benefit year ends 3) It's automatic if you stay eligible 4) Overpayments can reduce it. Hope that helps!

One more thing - make sure your address is up to date with ESD before your benefit year ends. If they can't reach you, the waiting week payment might get delayed or sent to the wrong place.

•Good point! I moved during my claim period and had to update everything to make sure I didn't miss any payments.

The waiting week is such an outdated concept anyway. Most people filing for unemployment are already in financial distress and making them wait an extra week for that first payment is just cruel. At least paying it back eventually is something I guess.

•I mean I get the policy reasons behind it but yeah, when you're struggling to pay rent that first week matters a lot.

•Better than nothing but would be nice if they just eliminated it completely

Has anyone had issues with the waiting week payment not showing up when it should have? My benefit year ended last week but I haven't seen the payment yet.

Lauren Wood
•It can take up to 7-10 business days after your benefit year ends. If it's been longer than that, you might want to contact ESD. I'd suggest trying Claimyr again to get through to someone quickly.

Abigail Spencer
•Okay I'll give it a few more days then try calling. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for all the detailed info! I had no idea about the waiting week getting paid back eventually. I'm currently on week 4 of my claim so sounds like I've got a while to wait before I see that money again. At least now I know it's not just gone forever. The Claimyr service sounds really helpful too - I've been dreading having to call ESD about other questions but maybe I'll give that a try.
