When can you file unemployment in Washington - timing requirements?
I'm trying to figure out the exact timing for when you can file for unemployment benefits in Washington. My last day of work is scheduled for next Friday, but I'm not sure if I should file immediately or wait until after my final paycheck. Also heard something about waiting periods - is that still a thing? Really don't want to mess this up and cause delays with my claim.

You can file your initial claim the Sunday after your last day of work. So if Friday is your last day, file that Sunday. Don't wait for your final paycheck - Washington ESD will ask about any wages you received during your first week when you file your weekly claim.

•Thanks! So I don't need to wait for the paycheck to clear or anything like that?

•Nope, just report those wages when you file your first weekly claim. The system will adjust your benefits accordingly.

there used to be a waiting week but they got rid of that during covid and never brought it back thank god

•Oh good, I was worried about that. One less thing to stress about.

The key thing is making sure you're actually unemployed through no fault of your own. If you quit or got fired for misconduct, you might not qualify. Washington ESD will investigate during adjudication if there's any question about your separation reason.

•It's a layoff due to company restructuring, so I should be good on that front.

•Perfect, layoffs are straightforward. Just make sure to keep any documentation about the layoff in case they ask for it.

I tried calling Washington ESD last month to ask about timing and could never get through. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals.

•How much did that cost? I'm already worried about money with losing my job.

•It's worth checking out their site for pricing, but honestly it was a lifesaver when I needed to talk to someone immediately about my claim status.

•I've heard about services like that but never tried one. Did they actually help resolve your issue?

MAKE SURE you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still pending! I made that mistake and it delayed everything by weeks. You have to file by the deadline or you lose that week's benefits.

•When do the weekly claims need to be filed? Is there a specific day?

•You get a 'week' to file but it's really from Sunday through Saturday. I always file mine on Sunday mornings to avoid forgetting.

Also remember you need to be actively looking for work and keeping a job search log. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week, and they do audit people randomly.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, even updating your LinkedIn profile. Check the WorkSourceWA website for the full list.

•And keep detailed records! Date, company name, method of contact, position applied for. You'll need all that if they audit you.

•Yes, you're supposed to register with WorkSourceWA within a certain timeframe. You might want to do that ASAP to avoid issues.

The whole system is so confusing. I wish they made it clearer when you're supposed to do what. Like why can't they just send you a checklist or something?

•They do have guides on the Washington ESD website, but I agree they could be more user-friendly.

•I found YouTube videos from people explaining the process step by step more helpful than the official guides tbh

If your claim goes into adjudication, that's when it gets really frustrating. Mine took 6 weeks to resolve and I couldn't get anyone on the phone to explain what was happening.

•What causes a claim to go into adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

•Usually it's when there's something unclear about your separation from work, or if you had multiple jobs, or if there's a discrepancy somewhere. Don't stress about it unless it happens.

•That's exactly when I used Claimyr actually - when my claim was stuck in adjudication and I needed to talk to someone to figure out what documents they needed.

Pro tip: screenshot everything when you file your claim and weekly claims. The system sometimes glitches and you'll want proof of what you submitted.

Zainab Omar
•Good idea, I'll definitely do that. Have you had issues with the system before?

Malik Davis
•Yeah, once it said I didn't file my weekly claim when I definitely did. Having the screenshot saved me from losing that week's benefits.

Another thing - make sure your direct deposit info is correct when you file. It's a pain to change later and can delay your first payment.

•Can you use any bank account or does it have to be a specific type?

•Any checking or savings account should work. Just double-check the routing and account numbers.

The whole process honestly gave me so much anxiety. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong or missing a step. But once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes pretty straightforward.

•That's reassuring to hear. I'm definitely nervous about messing something up.

•You'll be fine! Just take it one step at a time and don't overthink it.

Does anyone know if you can file online 24/7 or are there specific hours? I work weird shifts and might need to file at odd times.

Connor Murphy
•The online system is available 24/7, but they do maintenance sometimes on Sunday mornings. I'd avoid filing right at midnight on Sunday just in case.

•Perfect, thanks! That flexibility will definitely help.

I'm on standby status with my union job. The timing rules are different for that - you file when your union tells you to, not based on your last day of work.
0 coins
Zainab Omar
•That's interesting, I didn't know there were different rules for union members.
0 coins
Freya Pedersen
•Yeah, standby is a whole different category. You have to be expecting to return to work within a certain timeframe.

Whatever you do, don't wait to file thinking you might find a job quickly. It takes time for the claim to process and you can't backdate more than a week or two.

Zainab Omar
•Good point. Even if I find something quickly, at least I'll have the safety net in place.

Omar Fawaz
•Exactly! Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

The timing also matters for your benefit year. Once you file, you have 52 weeks to use your benefits, so don't delay if you're eligible.
0 coins
Zainab Omar
•So if I file this weekend, I have a full year to use the benefits if needed?
0 coins
Chloe Anderson
•Right, but you can only collect for a maximum of 26 weeks within that benefit year, assuming you qualify for the full amount.

I had to call Washington ESD multiple times during my claim and the hold times were insane. That Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually sounds like it could be really useful for avoiding those long waits.

Zainab Omar
•Yeah, I'm definitely going to keep that in mind if I run into issues that need a phone call.

•Smart plan. I wish I had known about it when I was dealing with my adjudication mess.

One last thing - make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file. Previous employers, dates, wages, reason for separation. Having it all organized will make the process much smoother.

Zainab Omar
•Great advice! I'll gather all that information this weekend before I file. Thanks everyone for all the help!
