When can someone apply for Washington ESD unemployment benefits - timing requirements?
I'm trying to figure out the exact timing for when you're allowed to file for unemployment benefits in Washington. My last day of work is coming up next Friday and I want to make sure I don't mess up the application timing. Do I need to wait until after my final day or can I apply before? Also heard something about a waiting week - is that still a thing? Really don't want to delay getting benefits if I can help it.

You can file your initial claim the Sunday after your last day of work. So if Friday is your last day, file that Sunday. Don't wait longer than that or you might lose out on benefits for those weeks.

•Thanks! So I definitely shouldn't file before my last day then?

•Correct, don't file before your separation date. Washington ESD will reject it and you'll have to start over.

The waiting week was eliminated in Washington back in 2020 I think? You should get paid for your first week if you're eligible.

•yeah no more waiting week, that was a covid change that stuck around

•That's a relief! I was worried about having to go two weeks without any income.

Just make sure you have all your info ready - SSN, employment history for the past 18 months, reason for separation. The Washington ESD application can be long if you're not prepared.

•Should I gather pay stubs too or do they get that info directly from employers?

Monique Byrd
•They get wage info from employers but having your pay stubs handy can help if there are any discrepancies later.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about timing and could never get through. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Super frustrating when you need answers about your claim.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without all the waiting and disconnections. You can check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ to see how it works. Saved me so much time and stress.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. The Washington ESD phone system is a nightmare.

Don't forget you need to register with WorkSource too for the job search requirements. That's separate from your UI claim.

•When do I need to do that? Right away or can I wait a bit?

•You should register within your first week of filing. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and WorkSource helps track that.

•It's definitely complex but once you get through the initial filing it gets easier. The weekly claims are pretty straightforward.

One thing to watch out for - if you get any severance pay, that might affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD has rules about that.

•I'm getting two weeks severance. Does that delay everything?
0 coins
Maggie Martinez
•It might create a waiting period depending on how it's paid out. You'll need to report it when you file your claim.

•Severance can be tricky. Sometimes it delays your start date, sometimes it doesn't. Depends on whether it's in lieu of notice or just additional compensation.

also make sure to file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still pending. you can lose benefits if you miss weeks

Update - I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to a Washington ESD agent in like 10 minutes instead of hours of busy signals. They were able to answer my questions about my pending claim status. Definitely worth it when you're stuck.

•That's amazing! I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues with my application.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•It was reasonable considering how much time and frustration it saved me. Check out claimyr.com for details.

My cousin filed the day before her last day and Washington ESD told her she had to wait and refile. Cost her a week of benefits because she was impatient.

•Wow, good thing I asked! I was tempted to file early just to get it over with.

•Yeah, they're pretty strict about the separation date. Better to wait and do it right.

Don't stress too much about the timing. As long as you file within a reasonable time after your last day you'll be fine. I waited like 2 weeks because I was hoping to find another job and still got all my back benefits.

•That's reassuring! Though I think I'll file right away just to be safe.

•You can get back benefits but it's always better to file sooner rather than later. Less chance of complications.

make sure you know if you were laid off vs fired vs quit - they ask about this and it affects your eligibility

•yeah layoffs are usually the easiest for UI approval

The Washington ESD website has a checklist of everything you need before you start the application. Might be worth looking at that first so you don't have to stop halfway through.

•Good idea! I'll check that out this weekend so I'm ready to file Sunday.

One more tip - screenshot or print your confirmation page after you submit. Sometimes the system glitches and having that proof helps.

•Smart thinking! I'll definitely do that.

•Yes, always keep records of everything with Washington ESD. You never know when you'll need proof of what you submitted.

if your employer contests your claim dont panic. happens sometimes even with layoffs. you can appeal if they deny you

Just wanted to add that if you do run into any issues or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim, Claimyr has been a lifesaver for me and others here. The regular phone lines are basically impossible to get through on, but their service connects you directly. Really helpful when you have time-sensitive questions about your benefits.

•I've heard good things about them too. Sometimes paying a little for that kind of service is worth it for the peace of mind.
